1950 Dink Carroll Column Provenance of Junior Players
During the 1950 Eastern Canada Memorial Cup Playoffs between Guelph and the junior Canadiens, Dink Carroll wrote an interesting column detailing the provenance of the players on the Guelph Biltmores. Note how Carroll refers to hockey as an industry. rather telling:

Eventually this had consequences when eligibility became an issue in the series:

Thats a fun article, Alf The Embalmer Pike coaxed to from Winnipeg to move to Guelph & take on the Coaching duties of the Ranger prospects. Im assuming Din Carroll is originally from Guelph yes? Hard to tell as he seems to like to talk about himself in the 3rd party. Like the Queen of Bloody England.

Alf Pike was an interesting character, player, who prior to WW2 played Centre in the Rangers organization & with the NHL club, 3rd line, two way checking type. After the war when returning to play, he was converted to a defence, then moved back up front to Left Wing. I believe the only player in the history of the game to have played all 3 positions. He did return to Western Canada not long after that, went on to Coach in the WHL, the Rangers, being replaced by Doug Harvey in New York, followed by a stint in Phoenix late 60's Coaching & Managing the Roadrunners.

Funny story about Alf (lots of them actually, the guy was no nonsense) and Andy Bathgate in Guelph, and this was years before Mikita & Hull supposedly "invented" the curved blade, as Bathgate had one briefly that he'd crafted while in Guelph. Anyway, he winds up & takes a slapshot during a game that goes wild, sailing over the boards & caging behind the net, hits some woman right in the mouth, pretty ugly scene. After the game, Alf goes over to Bathgate, asks to see his stick, looks over the curve like he's inspecting a corpse (he was a Mortician off-season), puts on the floor & jams his foot down on it breaking it of course, hands it back to Andy and tells him "dont ever use a blade like that again".
