Sabres re-sign Sulzer

Kevin Oklobzija ‏@kevinoDandC 14s

#Sabres officially say they have signed D Drew Bagnall and re-signed D Alex Sulzer.

BackGroundMusic 07-06-2013 10:13 AM

So yeah....time to trade a d-man or two.

gallagt01 07-06-2013 10:14 AM

Hopefully it's for vet depth in Rochester.

Or maybe a trade is coming. :D

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Alexander Sulzer on a one-year contract and defenseman Drew Bagnall on a multi-year, two-way contract.

Sulzer (6'1", 204 lbs., 5/30/84) has appeared in 32 games as a member of the Sabres in the last two seasons, tallying 12 points (6+6) and 16 penalty minutes, after the team acquired him from the Vancouver Canucks at the 2012 trade deadline. In 106 NHL games with Buffalo, Vancouver, Florida and Nashville, Sulzer has recorded 20 points (7+13) and 36 penalty minutes.

Dubi Doo 07-06-2013 10:18 AM

Hopefully as a number 7

La Cosa Nostra 07-06-2013 10:18 AM

Sulzer is sure to make a lot of people angry.

Old Navy Goat 07-06-2013 10:19 AM

I guess Chain will be pleased to see that Darcy made a stupid signing whenever he returns from cutting his lawn.

Vet #7 who does well with Ehrhoff when he's in the lineup. Not going to waste energy getting upset with a signing like that.

Gabrielor 07-06-2013 10:25 AM

Why? I guess that means McNabb starts in Roch? I suppose it shores up the left side, but again, why Sulzer?

Erhoff-Myers
Sulzer-Pysyk
Weber-Ruhwedel

McNabb-McBain
Crawford-Ristolainen

Ehrhoff - Myers
Weber - Sulzer
Pysyk - McBain

Ruhwedel, McNabb, Risto (Start in the AHL)

Paxon 07-06-2013 10:25 AM

Not that hot on it but as the #7, whatever. It keeps them from having to force players into the line-up I guess.

I'm hoping another veteran defenseman is brought in.

One of Ruhwedel or McNabb will start in Rochester. I think Ristolainen starts in Rochester. He and Armia will be bus buddies on AHL road trips.

Zman5778 07-06-2013 10:33 AM

Meh. Veteran #7 that has chemistry with Ehrhoff.

Would've liked to see something different, but I kind of expected it.

Beerz 07-06-2013 10:35 AM

This means Pardy time is over....... right? right?

SabresBillsBuffalo 07-06-2013 10:35 AM

Why?

I'm good with how it looks now from my tank commander's seat

Ehrhoff-Myers
Weber-Pysyk
Sulzer/McNabb/McBain/Ruhwedel/Ristolainen as bottom pairing + 7th defenseman (only if Sulzer or McBain) + rest in Rochester as waiver-exempt call-up options right down the thruway

Of note is that McNabb + Sulzer are both LHD options. I imagine Sulzer was re-signed because he and McBain give us LHD/RHD options with NHL experience who can both be carried with the big club even if they're not playing. McNabb, Ruhwedel, and Ristolainen would be sent to Rochester if they're not playing.

The more mediocre players on the ice the better. Sulzer can be a Tank hero.

Yep, that's basically it.

The one reservation I have to that is Sulzer-Ehrhoff pairing. I thought focus was on left-right pairings?

ADoubleD 07-06-2013 10:48 AM

I would've preferred Pardy as the vet #7 if we were gonna be bringing anyone back. I kinda wanted to see a guy brought in from outside to help the young guys, but at the same time I guess that's what Ehrhoff is for.

I'm also not really a fan of when people bring up the fact that Sulzer has chemistry with Ehrhoff. Maybe it's just me but I'd like to see our best dman playing with a guy who actually has NHL talent, not waste him with a guy whose a borderline #7.

I can understand McNabb playing in the AHL if he isn't ready, but why McBain? I'd rather have McBain up here to see what he has to offer, and whether or not he fits in here in at least the short term. I can't imagine both Sulzer and Ruhwedel making the team over McBain either.

I hate your second pairing. Don't we want to put Pysyk in a situation to succeed and develop as much as possible? Why would you want him playing with a guy like Sulzer? I hate this signing if he's in the NHL because he's not good enough to play with our young guys to help bring them along.

One can only hope Sulzer is here to show guys like McNabb they aren't being handed spots, and motivate them to work that much harder to earn their spot. I can't imagine the Sabres would have a problem with bumping Sulzer down to the AHL if the young guys prove they are ready.
