Game : Build the Habs 2014-15 defense

You're the Habs GM. Next season, the salary cap climbs up to $69 millions. You have 11 forwards signed (including Eller at $3,25M and White at $0,900M). You already signed a good UFA forward at over 4 millions. Add to that 1 or 2 depth players and your goalers salaries, that leaves exactly $28 millions to pay your defensive squad.

You have only 2 regulars signed :

Josh Gorges (3,9)
Davis Drewiske (0,637)

Add 2 potential youngsters to that :

Jarred Tinordi (1,082)
Nathan Beaulieu (1,275)

Total left : $21,1 millions

You also have the current UFA ready to leave the team. Here is the price tag they are asking for :

Andrei Markov : 6 millions
Alexei Emelin : 4 millions
Raphael Diaz : 3 millions
Francis Bouillon : 1,5 million

Then you have one RFA and his price tag :

PK Subban : 8 millions

There's also a few rookies that might be ready to play in the NHL :

Greg Pateryn (0,875)
Morgan Ellis (0,900)
Darren Dietz (0,900)

Finally, there's some good UFA on the market. But they have a high price tag :

7 millions (Phaneuf)
6 millions (Bouwmeester, Boyle, Timonen)
5 millions (Orpik, Hjalmarsson, Girardi, Seidenberg, Phillips, Nikitin)
4 millions (Pitkanen, Quincey, Meszaros, Mitchell, Tallinder, Robidas, Ericsson, Morris, Niskanen, MacDonald, etc.)
3 millions (many more...)
Here's the list

Question : Select the 8 defensemen that will be part of the team when the 2014-15 season starts. Their total salary should be under $28 millions. Try to leave some cap room too!!

Have fun!

So I keep the four guys we have already signed (Gorges, Tinordi, Beaulieu & Drewiske) for 7.9M leaving 21,1M.

I resign Subban, Diaz and Emelin for 15M, leaving us 6.1M.

I sign Hjalmarsson for 5 millions. 1.1M left.

Subban - Tinordi
Beaulieu - Hjalmarsson
Gorges - Emelin
Diaz - Drewiske

My choices :

PK Subban (8)
Alexei Emelin (4)
Josh Gorges (3,9)
Raphael Diaz (3)
Jarred Tinordi (1,082)
Nathan Beaulieu (1,275)
Davis Drewiske (0,637)
5 millions UFA (hopefully someone like Orpik, Hjalmarsson or Phillips becomes available)

Total : $26,894 millions. That leaves a little over 1 million of cap room.

Subban - Tinordi
Emelin - UFA
Gorges - Diaz
Beaulieu - Drewiske

Coldplay 07-09-2013 02:05 PM

Subban
Gorges
$5 million UFA (I'll take Dan Girardi, if he ever gets that far)
Emelin
Tinordi
Beaulieu
Pateryn
Drewiske

Subban-Girardi
Gorges-Emelin
Beaulieu-Tinordi

Chris Cutter 07-09-2013 02:06 PM

I'd waive Drewiske and trade Gorges for picks/prospects.

Sign Subban at 8 million.
Re-sign Emelin and Diaz at a combined 7 million.
Let Bouillon and Markov test the market.
Sign Seidenberg at 5 million.

Tinordi - Subban
Seidenberg - Diaz
Beaulieu - Emelin
Pateryn

Price My Man Crush 07-09-2013 02:07 PM

Subban
Gorges
$3 million UFA
Emelin
Tinordi
Beaulieu
Diaz
Drewiske

Darz 07-09-2013 02:11 PM

1. Subban
2. Gorges
3. Emelin
4. Diaz
5. Veteran D-man in the $3,000,000 a year range.
6. Tinordi
7. Beaulieu
8. Drewiske

Ginu 07-09-2013 02:15 PM

Everyone except me is wrong since I'm the only one who picked the trade route  Nobody thinks our GM is going to get one defenseman in a trade who'll be here in 2014-15? Especially since MB prefers trades over UFA.

HiggsBozon 07-09-2013 02:21 PM

Tinordi - Subban
Girardi - Niskanen (around 3M in fact)
Emelin (no way does he get 4M) - Diaz/Pateryn

Depth:
1. Subban (8)
2. Girardi (5)
3. Tinordi (1.082)
4. Emelin (3)
5. Niskanen (3)
6. Pateryn/Diaz (0.875/2.25)
7. Diaz/Pateryn (2.25/0.875)
8. Beaulieu (first callup)

Approximatively 20-25M spent on D, compared to slightly less than 20M now.

BigDaddyLurch 07-09-2013 02:23 PM

PK Subban - Jarred Tinordi
Alexei Emelin - Nathan Beaulieu
Cody Franson - Josh Gorges
Greg Pateryn/Davis Drewiske

Andrighetto Fabolous 07-09-2013 02:24 PM

Markov - Subban
Tinordi - Emelin
Beaulieu - Gorges
Drewiske/Pateryn

I think Diaz will have a solid year that makes him too expensive to keep since he's a UFA, I expect Tinordi to be full-time by then and hopefully Beaulieu will be ready to step in around then.

Coldplay 07-09-2013 02:25 PM

The 3 who voted Francis Bouillon extended at 1.5 - show yourselves! :P

Unless Markov gets injured he will be in NHL still

ForeverHabs97 07-09-2013 02:43 PM

Subban
Beaulieu
Tinordi
Markov
Emelin
Diaz
Gorges
UFA 5M

Ezpz 07-09-2013 02:46 PM

Subban
Emelin
Diaz
trade
Diaz
Gorges
Beaulieu
Drewiske

I'd prefer re-signing Markov but I can't see him taking a discount to stay in a reduced role.

Probably not for the Habs hell if am in Bergevins shoes I flip him before the camp and before he get hurt again. Time to move on and free a spot for younger legs and healthier knees.

meant to put Tinordi for the first diaz. time for sleep

AmeriHab 07-09-2013 03:14 PM

our D will depend on this year. If we're out at the deadline, can see Markov and some of the vets being moved for picks or near NHL ready prospects. If our pick is in the top of the draft, they may be NHL ready by the season

Sorinth 07-09-2013 03:21 PM

For the people who didn't pick Markov was it the price the OP gave for him was too high or do you just not like him?

The lack of credit he gets for our success is sometimes mind-boggling.

I love Markov. I didn't choose him for the simple reason that I don't think Bergevin will re-sign him at the end of his contract. I would, but don't the GMMB will.

Wasn't the OP asking what you would do as GM not what you think will happen.

Subban
Tinordi
Beaulieu

Only wish we had Mcdonagh.
