Carolina "Mystery Player": Wants to Play in NC; Waiting for JR to Clear Salary

Last week, Jim Rutherford declared that a "big time FA" had approached Carolina with interest to play there, but he was not optimistic about signing him.

Today, he was on the local sports radio station and claimed that the so-called "mystery player" and the team have a deal, but JR needs to clear salary to make it happen. The "mystery player" is waiting for the team to shed some money so he can be signed.

Bowman/Peters to your team for a 4th?

EDIT: The deal is a one year deal. At the time of this post, Jagr, Hainsey, Morrow and Grabovski are left, and are some of the names that have been speculated.

There is also a rumor that the 'Canes are in on Jagr, so it may be him (Jagr and Tlusty played on the same line with HC Kladno during the lockout).

Who's left out there?

Jagr?

Brunner
Morrow
Antropov
Raymond
Zidlicky
Grabovski
Sullivan
Gagne
Penner

Cam Barker? :sarcasm:

Dado 07-09-2013 02:59 PM

Um....what?

Who's left - Jagr, Grabovski, and....? Neither of those two strike me as guys looking for a move to the Carolinas.

Devils Trap 07-09-2013 02:59 PM

Jagr, Grabovski or Brunner

edit: One year deal ??? Jagr

Jagr signed in Dallas...he goes wherever the money is

Worth noting that Jagr and Jiri Tlusty played together during the lockout and apparently got on rather famously.

Jagr - Francis connection, too. It's gotta be Jagr.

Exactly. Why move to NC when we all need to know that all one really needs to do is go fishing in Ontario.

BringBackLibertys 07-09-2013 03:04 PM

That Eklund guy said Jagr....so it can't be him, right?

Honestly, what scares me is they have 5+ million cap space, and still need to clear some cap before signing said UFA?

jeromeo87 07-09-2013 03:05 PM

I wonder who JR is looking to move out. Moving out Ruutu would take a lot of physicality away from the Canes.. Maybe moving Pits for a slightly cheaper right-handed dman? Pits will be moving on after this year, anyway.. Moves Sekera back to his natural side..

Reclamation Project 07-09-2013 03:05 PM

Jagr would certainly help out the younger guys.

Ugene Malkin 07-09-2013 03:05 PM

Jagr 100%

orby 07-09-2013 03:05 PM

It's almost certainly Jagr and I can't wait to see how much Rutherford ponies up for him.

Jagr at 4.5/5.0 puts them right at the cap.

Matt Damon 07-09-2013 03:09 PM

Jagr would literally be the only one left I'd classify as a "big time UFA" and even that's a stretch. Grabovski doesn't really make sense with the Staals at 1 & 2C.

Analyzer 07-09-2013 03:09 PM

Probably Colby Armstrong. He's almost a superstar...

Canes can definitely get Jagr...

As long as they offer the most.

He goes where the money is.

Lindholm needs a contract plus another forward or two. Jagr at even 3M would push them right to the limit.

TBH, up until last year they had an internal cap, but after all the moves they made to get the big name players in here there is no way that is still in effect. Based on that, they are looking to spend 5+ million on a UFA. There is not ONE out there right now worth that. :shakehead

EDIT: Forgot about the high pick, that is another 1.5-1.75 mil right? Starting to make more sense. Only thing else I see is the young Staal needs to be re upped, but no way that is even 1M.

robsenz 07-09-2013 03:10 PM

has to be Corvo trade E4

Jagr + Grabovski!!!! Miami Heat style!

DEVILS ALL THE WAY* 07-09-2013 03:11 PM

Pitkanen for Fayne :dunno:

The Canes shed some salary and still get a top #4 d-men that can play 18 to 20 minutes per game. The Devils would add a d-man who would immediatly become our most "offensive d-man".

Both players are pending UFA's at the end of the year.

raynman 07-09-2013 03:12 PM

There might be 5+ million of capspace right now, but, Rutherford expects Lindholm to make the team out of camp. I'd say his cap hit with bonuses will be close to 2 million. Then they need a 4th liner and a #7 dman on the roster. Rutherford likes to have a little breathing room for any trades that could potentially help down the stretch. I imagine that's why he wants to clear some space.

Canes aren't a salary floor team anymore, and are likely going for the playoffs this year, but neither are they a cap team. Rutherford is looking to clear a little, not too much, room to be comfortable with signing another UFA. That's all this is. My feeling is that this is either for Jagr or Brunner, as either would round out our top six lines.

BLASPHEMOUS 07-09-2013 03:12 PM

I dunno, I think I'd rather have the boat.
