Habs/Hamilton defense

I wonder who the Habs will sign to fill out their defense group in Hamilton and provide depth for the big club?? We don't have a lot of defensemen sign and will need to sign 2 more I would guess.

in the NHL we should have ..............

1 PK
2 MARKOV
3 GORGES
4 DAIZ
5 BOUILLON
6 TINORDI
7 DREWISKE
INJ EMELIN

in the AHL we should have ...............

1 BEAULIEU
2 PATERYN
3 ELLIS
4 NYGREN
5 DIETZ

So the Habs will need to sign at least 1 more NHL ready defenseman for Hamilton and most likely 2. I would like to see the Habs sign Peckham/Fistric/Kostka to a 2 way deal. who else would be out their that might take a 2 way deal?

Mike The Wall 07-10-2013 09:03 AM

I would not mind Ty Wishart or Colton Teuburt

Dagistitsyn 07-10-2013 09:05 AM

Peckham on a 2 way deal would be good for the Dogs.

Blind Gardien 07-10-2013 09:05 AM

I don't see Fistric getting a 2-way deal. But I'd be open to the idea of a true training camp battle, sign a guy like Fistric, or Murray if the scouts think he can still play, because we do need some size/hitting ability on our D. And then just see what happens in camp. With Emelin out, there is room for 8 other D breaking camp. Tinordi seems ready for the NHL to me, but I don't think it ever hurts a player to get more experience and heavy playing time in the AHL. If somebody outperforms Bouillon or Drewiske in camp, I'd have no qualms about waiving them to the minors. Bouillon could be a good mentor down there. Etc, etc. You can't have too many D kicking around.

If we are only looking for a veteran call up Peckam may be willing to sign a 2 way deal. Fistric and Kostka will surely get 1 way deals pretty easily.

Nathan McIver.

What is the rule about two way deals when players are sent back?
Is there a rule about putting the player on waivers?

Peckam is 25 and has played over 100 games over the last 5 years.

If we sign Fistric, then Tinordi would go back to AHL.
Not sure that Tinordi in the press box is a good idea.
Maybe better to see him play top-4 minutes in Hamilton.

We could sign a vet AHL d-men (like we did with DeSantis).
I don't see this as a big problem.
Last season we hired Corbin, from the first reports, he was quite good.
For sure we need some vets to add to these young players.

1. A two-way deal only means that you have a lower salary if you are sent back down to the AHL. For example, Martin St-Pierre makes 225,000 in the AHL and 525,000 in the NHL. (Approximate numbers). It has no effect on your waiver eligibility.

2. Peckham would have to go through waivers but would he get picked up?

3. Corbin wasn't really a vet.

Is Thrower going back to the WHL?

Next year should be interesting too with Mac Bennett and Dalton Thrower graduating (if he's not already graduating this year)

We have a glut of young defenceman coming up all at the same time.

I think Thrower can go back to the WHL and I also think he needs to go back and have a good year and to put on some weight. He will be a player someday because he has heart but you will not see him in Montreal for 3 more years.

We may not find out until the end of training camp. He can go to the WHL, AHL or ECHL so unless the Habs come out and say one way or the other we won't know where he's headed. With the Habs not needing to sign him until June 1st, 2014 they have time to decide what to do.

The defense in Hamilton is already to young and have 4 right handed dman. I think the Habs will send him back to the WHL. I can't see them sending a second round pick to the ECHL.

He would fill a few roles with the baby habs toughness/veteran AHLER and would be a good pickup.

it's a problem for sure, even without Thrower, as so far it's actually shaping up to be a younger D then the Dogs had last year. But for me, I would rather see him in the ECHL then the WHL playing against 16-19 year olds. I hate the idea of overagers going back to the CHL, the Habs never do this but we'll see if the new management has a different outlook. The last time the Habs had an overager in the CHL was Christian Larrivee ('00j, 114th overall)

For what its worth, le journal de Montreal said Dietz and Thrower were Hamilton bound a few days ago.

Our D looks pretty bad as it stands now.

I disagree, lots of talented young guys.

Hannibal 07-10-2013 09:08 PM

Just play Tinordi on the Left side instead of the Righ side. Thank you.

We have a Norris trophy winner in that top 6. Pretty sure that makes it mediocre at the very worst.

I think he was talking about our NHL defense... Which is pretty bad. Like you said, there's a lot of good youth talent in Hamilton though.

Some work needs to be done there. Next summer, these guys will be UFA :

Markov
Emelin
Diaz
Bouillon

Subban is RFA.

Emelin gets a raise, probably 3.5 mill x 4 years, stays...
Diaz is trade-bait this season...he's gone by the deadline...
Bouillon retires a Hab, like he wants...
Markov either gets traded before deadline or takes a BIG hometown discount and accepts his 3rd pairing PP specialist role...or leaves...
Subban signs for 6.5 mill x 6 years (recognize the contract ;) )

I'm starting to see him as a potential right winger on a 4th line. I'd like them to try that.
