July 18 - August 7

Can't wait to see V/H/S/2 and Curse of Chucky !

hototogisu 07-11-2013 08:32 AM

I'm out of town for the last week of the festival which is a bummer but I'll still be able to catch some cool stuff - the Zulawski retrospective, the spaghetti westerns, the Miike movies, V/H/S 2, The Killing of America, Sweetwater and whatever else looks good along the way.

ashtraygirl 07-11-2013 11:50 AM

I'm buying a 10-movie pass this year for the first time! So exciting!! :)

Most looking forward to V/H/S2, You're Next, The Conjuring, The Battery and Cheap Thrills.

hototogisu 07-16-2013 02:05 PM

Anybody get tickets yet? I got:

Shield of Straw
Lesson of the Evil
V/H/S/2
The Battery
Sweetwater
Szamanka
Across the River
The Killing of America
L'amour Braque
Doomsdays

Although I might not be able to make it to V/H/S/2 after all now...if it sells out and someone wants a ticket, let me know.

I finished buying my tickets at about 1:12pm, and the box office only opened at 1pm. I wouldn't have been able to go but just for fun I tried to look-up tickets for The World's End...it had already sold out

How many ****** zombie movies this year? I sat through the entire preview DVD last year and boy did it get annoying.

overlords 07-16-2013 02:20 PM

Also, pretty sure I also got tickets to the conjuring from a buddy who works at Fantasia.

There's always a degree of sameness in the programming each year. Zombie movies, "wacky" Asian movies, over-the-top action movies...most of them don't interest me much.

I just filled out the media accreditation form to review and cover this festival.

Here are the films I'm looking to review:

Zero Charisma (July 20)

Cottage County (July 21)

Reset (July 30)

Curse of Chucky (July 2)

The World's End (July 6)

Let us know how it is!

Are you a big fan of the first?

Think I tried downloading it when it was still new and could only find really bad cams so I lost interest.

I'm actually a pretty easy mark for shaky cam horror when it's done right. In my mind, a scary situation is even worse when you're immersed in it, and POV only helps that along.

V/H/S 2

Jee 07-21-2013 12:35 AM

I liked the first one better.

Still a very good movie.

hototogisu 07-22-2013 12:20 PM

I had to miss V/H/S/2 in the end, too bad. Glad to hear it was good. I thought I remember you didn't like the first one, Pyretta?

The second screening is sold-out unfortunately but I saw The Battery on Sunday and it was amazing. Definitely try to watch it if it shows up on Netflix or on DVD soon.

Jee 07-22-2013 12:23 PM

Going to attend the "Massacre au camp d'ÚtÚ" showing on wednesday. Anyone else ?

Ever seen it before? It's a gem. Wish I could go.

I HATED the first one. I liked the concept but I didn't like any of the videos. The second was much better imo.

The first one wasn't very good IMO (the guy with the camera in his eye) and the last one got me pissed off. I really didn't want to see a dog this cute die.

The zombie one was amazing.

And the Indonesian cult was interesting, in a WTF way.

Still, hated that we only had 4 different stories compared to 5 in V/H/S.

ashtraygirl 07-22-2013 02:02 PM

I agree about the 4th segment from VHS2 being lame. I actually liked the first one though. I'm a little biased - I'm a big Adam Wingard fan. I'll be checking out You're Next on Aug 3rd, which he directed.

I also saw The Battery last night, which was a pretty original zombie flick. Apparently the budget was around 6000$, which is incredible. It had a really goo soundtrack. I highly recommend!

I'm really looking forward to The Dirties, which seems to be a bullying/school shooting premise.

Is that the French version of Sleepaway Camp?

Yes, and the french dub makes it a classic, apparently.

I really liked the first one. Especially the first video (I think? The one with the demon chick). The only one I didn't like was the deer/car accident one. I "got" it but it just felt out of place. Anyway I thought the whole thing was fun. Looking forward to seeing the second one at some point.

Did you stick around for the Q&A? I had to zip out to catch another movie (Sweetwater - which I regretted) but I would like to have stayed. Seemed like a cool dude.

Which one was that ? I don't remember one having a deer.

This was in the first one...it was a really quiet/slow one, maybe the 3rd or 4th short. I think a motorcyclist hit a deer and then a mother and her daughter came up behind them in an SUV. Lots of piano music. Not scary at all (and not intended to be either).

I'm running out the door or else I'd look up the actual name/description for you.
