Summer Papers II (August 14th): Prospect pool depth, Game time change, Eric O'Dell.
Jets news:

Hockey Prospectus: Top 10 prospects of 2013. A late add to yesterday’s papers, past guest on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show, Corey Pronman put out a list of the team’s organizational depth (rated 12th in the league) as well as as assessment of those ten prospects on the list.

According to Scott Brown (Senior Director of Corporate Communications for the Jets);

#NHLJets announce pre-season game vs. #nhlbruins on Sept. 26 at MTS Centre will now start at 6:30pm CT due to broadcast request.”

Illegal Curve: First Annual Winnipeg Jets Gala Dinner – Save the Date. The date is October 16th, 2013 with proceeds going towards the True North Foundation. Further details are still to come.

The Sudbury Star: O’Dell hopes to take off with Jets. Nice article on the Jets prospect which I missed over the weekend. Sounds like he is training hard for the start of camp.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Ex-Predator Halischuk brings ‘hard game’ to ‘Peg. Ed had a chance to catch up with the newest member of the Jets and got a description of his game.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets snap up Matt Halischuk from Predators. A little more depth on the right side. Will be interesting to see whether he ends up with the Jets or with the IceCaps.

On the Forecheck: Matt Halischuk season review. For more on the Jets newest acquisition head over to our friends at this Predators site as they had a chance to watch him for a couple of seasons and give an assessment on his performance from last season.

Illegal Curve: Toews takes on Bogosian at The Rumble at the Ridge II. The second edition of The Rumble at the Ridge Celebrity Pro-Am takes place Tuesday, July 16th at Pine Ridge Golf Club as part of The Players Cup week. This year, Winnipeg Jets defensemen Zach Bogosian takes on Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews in golf battle for the ages.

Jets news:

Globe and Mail: Scheifele working hard to make team this season. Fans will be happy to hear that he is spending the summer getting ready for a very important training camp this season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Good things come in 3s. Here is where it gets really tough for fans as the desire to win now vs. long term prospect development battles for supremacy.

Winnipeg Free Press: Coach Kane. Must come as welcome relief for Jets fans who were concerned about the recovery of the Jets young gun. Should be a help for the young prospects as well.

Winnipeg Sun: First-round picks Scheifele and Trouba joined at the hip. Good to hear that the two top prospects in the Jets system have created a bond and will be there to push each other as they continue to develop.

Winnipeg Sun: First-rounder Josh Morrissey enjoys warm Winnipeg welcome. You got the sense at the draft that he was excited to experience playing in a hockey mad city like Winnipeg and it sounds like it lived up to his expectations. Ken also covers the latest on prospect Ivan Telegin and some local players at Jets camp.

Jets news:

- The NHLPA announced the arbitration dates yesterday and here are the relevant dates for Jets fans to be aware of:
Bryan Little – 24th, Blake Wheeler – 29th, Paul Postma – 30th, Zach Bogosian – 2nd

Winnipeg Free Press: Tangradi planning to up his totals. He has the size and the tools but it is past time for the 2nd Round pick of the Ducks from back in 2007 to show a team that he can take it to the next level.

Winnipeg Free Press: Never, ever give up the dream. Every once in awhile a long shot comes in at the track so it never hurts to continue to pursue your dream. Good to hear that he is using hockey to get an education so in case playing professionally doesn’t work out, he will have something solid to fall back on.

Winnipeg Free Press: Sitting pretty between pipes. Always nice to have some depth at goalie. Especially since it takes a bit of time for development.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets sign two more RFAs. Unfortunately for Jets fans none of the names signed yesterday are part of the Big 3 RFAs that fans want to see signed on the dotted line as soon as possible.

Winnipeg Sun: Prospect Connor Hellebucyk blazed trail through Texas. Goaltenders take a bit longer than other positions to develop, but it appears that Connor Hellebucyk kick started things off very well last season.

Illegal Curve: Development Camp Day 2 audio. Hear from Jacob Trouba, Adam Lowry, Brenden Kichton and Nic Petan.

Illegal Curve: Jets sign Eric Tangradi to two year deal. Just after the arbitration dates were announced by the NHLPA, the Jets released the news that they had re-signed the Pennsylvania native to a two year deal.

The Telegram: IceCaps should benefit from life of Riley. With most of the focus on the Jets we shouldn’t forget how important it is to have proper depth throughout the organization.

Jets news:

Note: While many Jets fans were awaiting the release of the full NHL regular season schedule, the only news that came out was from what was purported to be a leaked copy of the Panthers schedule. If true, the Jets will be heading to Del Boca Vista Phase II on December 5th and Florida will be in Winnipeg later that month on the 20th. The full NHL schedule is expected to be released later today. Stick to @illegalcurve for the release. We will have a post on site shortly after the schedule comes out.

Winnipeg Free Press: Lowry aiming for spot on the Rock. You don’t often hear of prospects talking about aiming for a spot on the AHL affiliate but the self awareness that Lowry possesses will likely hold him in good stead. He realizes that the AHL can be an important development tool in a young players journey to NHL success. Article also touches on J.C. Lipon on draft day, home grown product Peter Stoykewych, Adam Lowry being mic’d up and Josh Morrissey blogging.

Winnipeg Free Press: Pint-sized Petan has big dreams. If you’ve had an opportunity to watch him this week you can tell this kid has skills. If he can add some size to his frame the Jets are going to have a steal.

Winnipeg Sun: Brendon Kichton has something to prove after getting snubbed by Islanders. Do the Jets have a diamond in the rough in this 7th round pick? He will be trying to prove the Islanders wrong for letting him slip away and if he is able to do so, the Jets will happily be the recipients of this unexpected bonus.

Winnipeg Sun: Jimmy Lodge building on solid foundation. Lots of fans are happy that the Jets were able to secure Lodge later than expected. Defininetly a player to watch in the future.

Winnipeg Sun: Winnipegger Stoykewych relishing opportunity at Jets’ development camp. Still seems unreal to think of young Winnipeg kids having an opportunity to put on a jersey for their home town team. Article also covers Adam Lowry being mic’d up and the prospects pizza party the other night.

M.GoBlue.com: The Copp blog – First Development Camp. So far he has blogged about the first three days of camp. Always interesting to read a young prospects thoughts on Camp.

July 19th
Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Winnipeg signs RFA Postma to two-year deal. While fans are over eager to see one of the big 3 RFAs get signed, all these smaller deals are quite necessary to shore up the team’s depth. Hopefully the Postman can continue to deliver (sorry couldn’t resist) and develop under the watchful eye of Charlie Huddy.

Winnipeg Free Press: Olsen’s breakout beefs up organization’s depth at centre. For a team looking for centre depth, any promise at this position will be greedily sought by fans.

Winnipeg Free Press: Burmistrov gone but not forgotten Noel denies rift with Burmi. One could hardly expect the Jets bench boss to air any dirty laundry during the presser he had with media yesterday.

Winnipeg Sun: Prospect has that old Sutter style. It is clear that there is a lot more depth this season than we have seen previously which inevitably means that guys need to compete harder to get noticed by the Jets brass. After the forgettable season he had in the WHL last season, Lukas Sutter is trying to re-capture a spot as a top prospect within the organization.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets hopeful making name for himself. His route to the Jets has been a tad unexpected but Juho (he prefers Jussi) Olkinuora is looking to turn some heads.

TSN: Thoughts from Development Camp. In addition to coach Noel’s comments about Alexander Burmistrov and the amount of rope he will be willing to give Scheifele and Trouba, the article concludes with a couple of comments from 2013 1st Round pick Josh Morrissey.

Illegal Curve: Day 4 of Development camp audio. Listen to coach Noel discuss: His thoughts on the development camp. What is he looking for? Thoughts on Lukas Sutter. Talk about organizational depth. Talking about remaining RFAs not signed. His experience with Arbitration. Talk about new players (Frolik, Setoguchi). Burmistrov discussion. How much rope might he give prospects (i.e. Scheifele & Trouba) to break into the lineup. What can he see the KHL doing for Burmistrov’s game? Does he expect to see Burmistrov in Jets uniform again? Excitement for a full season? Looking back at 48 game schedule. Could exhibition games last season have changed the Scheifele narrative for last season? Anything on next season’s schedule? There is also audio from goalie prospect Juho Olkinuora.

We’ve isolated some of the highlights for the upcoming season. Ezra and I will break down our top 10 games next week.

On the Forecheck: NHL Travel Miles - Super Schedule. Dirk breaks down the distance each team will have to travel. Unsurprisingly the Jets distance will increase as they head to the expansive Western Conference but not in a significant fashion.

Winnipeg Free Press: Doing deals priority No. 1. Always nice to add complimentary pieces but now is the time to put away the platitudes used with the media, roll up those sleeves and get the heavy lifters signed.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets get heavy homestretch to start. Once again the Jets will be starting a totally unique season for fans as they jump to the Western Conference.

Winnipeg Sun: Payroll on rise. Considering that the Jets still have Bogosian, Wheeler and Little to sign you can expect to see a pretty sizable increase relatively soon. At least we think it will be soon.

Winnipeg Sun: Trouba has busy summer ahead. We know where Jets fans want to see him next season but the question is will his development be best served in Winnipeg or in St. John’s?

Winnipeg Sun: Morrisey wins over doubters. The poll that was live on our site since the draft has been overwhelmingly positive about the selection of Morrissey and based on what he has done this week Jets nation is can be excited what is next for the young prospect.

NHL.com: Jets could turn to Scheifele, Trouba to fill lineup gaps. Patrick gives a good assessment of the week that was and a look ahead at some of the holes the team will have to fill before next season.

Illegal Curve: GM Kevin Cheveldayoff concludes Development Camp. Initial thoughts on the Development Camp. More about off ice development than on ice? Jets depth at goalie. What did he see from Josh Morrissey? Getting Postma signed. Opportunity for Postma. Blake Wheeler tweet. Concern about the Arbitration process. Salary cap concerns. What does Adam Pardy bring to the organization? How has Zach Redmond’s summer been going? Burmistrov question. What does Matt Halischuk bring? Thoughts on the schedule. Filling the AHL cupboard.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Eight Jets have Oly possibilities. Quite the international flavour on the Jets as a number of players have been invited. When cuts are made the number to make the final Olympic roster will most certainly not be eight.

Illegal Curve: Anthony Peluso signed to two year deal. Just when we thought all the action was done for the day, Winnipeg announced late on Monday that they had come to terms with the pugilistic Anthony Peluso.

Winnipeg Sun: A Little closer to cap with $23.5M deal for centre. Considering the state of the Jets currently at centre ice, many were glad to have this big need filled.

Illegal Curve: Bryan Little conference call. The Jets held a conference call with their centre and we have the full audio for those who missed it. You can also read some of the comments that we transcribed. Proponents of this city will appreciate the comments that Little made during the call.

Winnipeg Sun: American execs pay big compliment to Jacob Trouba with Olympic camp invitation. While it is nice that he will gain some valuable experience going to camp it should be understood that the US brain trust has also invited other young US born players such as Nashville’s Seth Jones and Montreal’s Alex Galchenyuk to name a couple. In our post we have a link to the full list of all 48 players invited to the American camp to be held August 26-27 in Virginia.

Winnipeg Sun: Captain Andrew Ladd thrilled to be in Olympic team mix. While he is going to face an uphill climb to make a stacked Canadian team, especially with his skill set, it is nonetheless quite the honour to be asked to play for your country.

Illegal Curve: Andrew Ladd conference call. The captain spoke with media after it was announced that he would be heading to Calgary for orientation camp. Also spoke about the new members of the Jets.

Jets news:

The Telegram: O’Dell back in the Jet stream. He was the IceCaps leading scorer last season and I’m sure fans in St. John’s are happy to have him back in the fold for another season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Olys enough to get Buff to be buff? If shooting for an Olympic roster spot is sufficient to get him back to form, Jets fans will be happy to be the secondary beneficiaries of this change.

Winnipeg Free Press: USA Hockey intrigued by Byfuglien’s potential. Spoke about all four members of the Jets (Trouba, Bogosian, Byfuglien and Wheeler) who have been invited to camp. Had an interesting take on Byfuglien.

Illegal Curve: Team USA GM David Poile spoke about four members of Jets invited to camp (audio). Listen to the Nashville GM (and GM of Team USA) speak about these four players and what they could bring to his team.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Chevy locks up Wheels. I had a feeling on Friday AM that this news would break at 5 pm and while I was off by a few hours, Jets fans everywhere were happy to see another long term committment to this team and city. If you miss it, fear not, as we will have the entire presser posted on Illegal Curve.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets lock up Wheeler. It is clear that the Minnesotan is happy playing in this city and especially enjoys the support from the fan base. He will have six more years with which to further prove the value of this contract.

Yahoo Canada: Top 30 starting goalies in the NHL. Good news Jets fans is that Ondrej Pavelec cracked the list and is predicted to be higher after next season. Bad news, he was ranked 26th on the list.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler happy with deal. Fans will be happy to read the comments from the rangy winger about the future of this team and his reasons for wanting to be a part of this development.

Winnipeg Sun: Wheeler signs on dotted line, gets hefty raise. While some feel this is market value and others think it could be an overpay, the truth is we won’t truly know the value of this contract for quite some time. Hard to be an absolutist one way or the other with that type of uncertainty. It will be on the Minnesota native to prove that the Jets made a wise long term investment.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets are where Blake Wheeler wants to be. He feels that the pressure will serve him well as he doesn’t believe the long term contract will make him complacent.

Winnipeg Sun: Olympic training camp invite has Jets’ Wheeler pumped. He liked the big ice while playing in Germany, so perhaps this will translate if he gets the opportunity to play for Team USA.

Illegal Curve: Blake Wheeler conference call. Listen to Blake Wheeler talk about his new six year deal which was announced late on Friday night as well as discussing his thoughts on the future of this team.

July 30th
Jets news:

TSN Radio 1290: Hustler & Lawless interview with Blake Wheeler (audio link to MP3). In addition to talking about his new contract, the Minnesotan said something that should make Jets fans very happy. When asked about how Dustin Byfuglien looks (at the 7:57 mark) he said “People are going to be pretty fired up to see Buff play this year”. When pressed further as to whether he (Buff) has been in a conditioning program Wheeler said “he’s going to open some eyes this year. I think you are going to see a big time player in Dustin Byfuglien this year. I’m happy he is on my team”. And if this picture that was tweeted at us as well as one Jim Toth tweeted are accurate (cannot confirm date of either), Jets fans are going to be very, very happy to see Buff come September.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bogosian ‘extremely happy’ with Jets’ seven-year deal. Somewhat challenges the myth that guys will refuse to sign in Winnipeg. Of course some might counter that you need to overpay guys to keep them. But for right now guys like Bogosian, Wheeler and Little are perfectly content making this place home for years to come. Perhaps this notion that Winnipeg cannot attract quality free agents will be challenged when the Jets are competing in the playoffs as well as vying for the best available UFAs.

Winnipeg Free Press: The Bogosian file. Five fast facts about the Jets defenceman.

Winnipeg Sun: Bogosian signs for 7 years and $36 million. Ken covers all the terms of the deal as well as some nuggets from the Chevy presser.

Winnipeg Sun: It’s payoff time for Jets. Probably the biggest statement, and one which seemed to resonant with Jets fans on twitter, during the Kevin Cheveldayoff presser was this comment by the Jets GM “Fans in Winnipeg should know that Mark Chipman and David Thomson are committed to building a winner in this city.” As Ken says in his article, the wallet has now been opened and it is time for the players to prove that there was value in these deals.

Winnipeg Sun: Bogosian gears up for Olympic camp. Always a positive when you are seen as a potential contributor for your country in the Olympics.

NHL.com: With Bogosian secured, core in place for Jets. The composition of this team is pretty firmly established as the last of the RFA deals got done on Monday. Does this do enough to make the Jets a playoff team in your eyes?

SI.com: Jets get lit up in new contract for Zach Bogosian. Seems to be a lot of absolute certainty that the Jets were ‘lit up’ in these negotiations. The assertion being that Winnipeg (the city) cannot possibly be a desirable place to play so they got burnt in the negotiations. Quite the statement. Of course, anyone who has spoken to Zach Bogosian for any length of time knows his feelings about playing in this city.

USA Today: 10 predictions for the 2013-14 NHL season. Kevin Allen looks ahead to next season and his point #8 should be of interest to Jets fans, although they will likely not be happy if his prediction comes true. Of course if the news about Dustin Byfuglien is true, this could significantly alter the Jets for next season.

Illegal Curve: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff conference call. Listen to the Jets GM speak for almost 25 minutes as he discusses the Bogosian signing as well as a number of other topics. For those unable to listen at work, you can read some of the highlights from the call.

Illegal Curve: Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian conference call. Listen as the Massena, NY native talks about his desire to stay in the Peg’ long term and other reasons he signed a seven year deal with the Jets organization.

Globe and Mail: Playoff berth the next step for young Jets core. Will not be an easy task for Winnipeg as they transition to the Western Conference but should be quite a fun ride for this team.

Yahoo (Puck Daddy): Has Ron Hainsey's NHLPA lockout 'bad cop' role blackballed him in free agency? While Hainsey was asked to play above his role in Winnipeg, you would have to suspect some team would have been willing to take on the serviceable defenceman for the upcoming season. Of course we don't know what kind of money he is asking for and as many Jets fans would tell you, he will certainly not be earning close to what he had in his previous contract.

U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp news: Corey Pronman reported a couple of days ago that according to USA U20 coach Don Lucia, Winnipeg prospect James Lodge was injured and would miss a couple of weeks. The actual injury was not disclosed. As well of note, the Jets Andrew Copp went awkwardly into the boards during a game but it was later determined that he was fine and could play in next game.

Jets news:

Sports-Express.ru: Antropov returned to KHL. Via google translate so bear with me, but it appears to say he remains in North America to train but wants to return to the KHL after he got a taste of it during the lockout.

- According to Scott Brown, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for the Jets a couple of items of interest for Winnipeg fans as the game time for the November 29th away game against the Flyers has been moved to 10:30 am CST. Also the four newest members of the Jets have selected new numbers as follows: Devin Setoguchi 40, Michael Frolik 67, Matt Halischuk 15 and Adam Pardy 2.

Jets official site: Frolik welcomes Stanley Cup to Czech Republic. Always interesting to read what the players are doing with the Cup during their time with Lord Stanley’s Mug. Fans in Winnipeg should be happy to hear how accommodating he was when meeting his hometown fans and also his comments about competing for a higher role in Winnipeg next season.

NHL.com: Choosing hockey has proven right path for Copp. It is not easy being a two sport athlete and it seems that the decision to focus on one sport is proving to be a solid decision for the prospect.

Hockey Canada National Junior Team: Canada 5 Finland 3.
