The Kings have agreed to terms on a new two-year contract for defenseman Jake Muzzin. Details coming soon.

Good. I don't care what Kings fans have to say, he was only a rookie last season and stepped up big time. Some size, strength, and time will do him good.

I agree. I thought he had a very strong season for a rookie. A lot has been said about his not so great playoffs , but I will even disagree on that. He was a +16 in the regular season and only a -2 in the playoffs. In comparison Doughty was a -7 in the playoffs, Regehr was a -8 in the playoffs. I thought he made a few minor mistakes here and there but he was still very capable on the power-play and made some good plays.

Very good player, hoping I can take him quietly in fantasy.

There goes one RFA arbitration case.

More than minor. Blatant would be a better word.

He's got a very nice shot, can hold onto the puck for an extra second to open up a lane, and he can make a nice first pass. He can also give the puck away in so many different and interesting ways. Horrible passes up the middle. Losing the puck in his feet along the boards and getting steamrolled by a winger, which happened, I don't even know how many times against the Blues in the 1st round.

He's got talent, and he was a rookie last year. Had his ups and downs. Played in almost every game though, regular season and playoffs, so he was doing something right. I have no problem with the Kings signing him, and hopefully he gets better.

What a steal. I am done trying to figure out the RFA defencemen market at this point.

KingCanadain1976 07-12-2013 12:30 PM

more then i expected but good to be signed

Bandit 07-12-2013 12:43 PM

Don't worry, he'll get hit in the face by an errant pancake and next year we'll be talking about how we're trading him because of the emergence of Deslauriers, Forbort, <insert flavor of the month stick here>.

Muzzin has potential, but plus/minus is not a good way to defend any player. Small sample size results are dominated by bounces and luck.

As for the playoffs, he was kept away from tough matchups, while Doughty was not.

He is an offensive force with a hell of a shot who still needs to work on his overall defensive game.

I'm also not a huge fan of plus/minus but I think it does have some merit at times. My point was that he wasnt like a -20 or something.

Sure he wasnt going against 1st lines like Doughty. At the same time I feel he got better as the playoffs went on. He does need to improve defensively but so do most rookies.

Not all Kings fans are down on Muzzin. I think the kid got a TON of experience last season that's gonna pay off in spades next year.

Ellerby's the one I'm worried about. But with a Mitchell (hopefully) return, that should be a lesser issue.

Hivemind 07-12-2013 12:53 PM

But how is Jeff Schultz supposed to get ice time!?!?! :sarcasm:

I wouldn't even say I'm down on him, as there's room for growth, but I'm super-bummed that now some team is going to land Martinez for much less than he's really worth, and if Muzzin doesn't pan out, that's gonna look even worse.

CNS 07-12-2013 01:04 PM

Slight overpayment but it's fine. Hopefully Martinez isn't traded and we get a REAL battle for the last D spot.

Frolov 6'3 07-12-2013 01:07 PM

Overpaid by a million.

Henkka 07-12-2013 01:09 PM

Few points.

- Ken Holland did like this contract.
- Brendan Smith didn't like this contract.

Say what?

Another team could have made the same offer to him, and if he had accepted it, there would be no compensation to the Kings.

Most rookies do need to improve, sure -- he's just going to have a lot more handwaving for his mistakes due to his point production.

Like some others here, I am worried about trading the more experienced Martinez for peanuts, while at the same time still not knowing for sure that Muzzin will actually become better. I wish Muzzin and Martinez had more time to battle it out. That's making the Ellerby and Schultz signings more frustrating.

Reclamation Project 07-12-2013 01:18 PM

Excited to see his play after a full training camp and season. He's got one hell of a shot and I thought he had a solid rookie season.

Choralone 07-12-2013 01:21 PM

I think we've been spoiled by Doughty and Voynov, and expect all our young D to make the transition to the NHL with the same (seemingly) effortless grace. Muzzin did fine for a rookie and I glad he's continuing to grow with us.

On the same note, I'm dismayed by all the hate Dwight King gets. He had the proverbial sophomore slump - I expect more from him this year.
