Clune Signs 2-Year Extension

http://predators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=678206

Congrats to him and good for our 4th line. I will say Clune surprised pretty much all of us who questioned his waiver pickup.

Nashville Transplant 07-17-2013 11:30 AM

Trotz loves this guy. Poile loves this guy. He was even brought in to speak to the kids last week. FANTASTIC. Onward and upward, Dicky!

triggrman 07-17-2013 11:42 AM

Good deal. I'm sure he'll be an overpaid bum by many on here but I like Clune and what he brought to the table last season after really being down on him at first.

ThirdManIn 07-17-2013 11:47 AM

Hard to consider someone overpaid when he isn't clearing $1m per year, and that's coming from a guy who isn't a Clune fan.

maplepred 07-17-2013 11:48 AM

Glad to see cluner back! I was worried we may lose him after signing useless nystrom and Hendricks!

I just hope this doesn't mean the end of spaling now...

Cashville 07-17-2013 11:51 AM

Was super bearish on the original waiver wire pickup along with 90% of our fanbase. Completely surprised everyone by being one of the few bright spots in our roster last year. Guy bleeds energy and yellow Predator juice.

That said, no idea where he fits in the line-up next year now that we have even more grinders thanks to FA (didn't think this was possible).

Mehh

Preds33 07-17-2013 11:53 AM

This is a great deal, happy to be able to see him for 3 more years.

I wonder if that's what happened to the ice they put down yesterday.

D depth?

We have weber, josi, Klein, Ellis, jones, Bartley, and ekholm. That's seven capable NHL defensemen. If injuries happen then we can get someone IMO, I think most pressing need is scoring.

So, if say Klein goes down with an injury, we make a trade that night? Call up Valentine? We need D depth bad. And scoring.

triggrman 07-17-2013 12:34 PM

If Klein goes down you insert Bartley to the 2nd pairing or Ekholm. We have 7 NHL defensemen right now.

Congrats to you!
But man we have a lot of grinders right now.

For that particular game, yes. For future games?

It's always nice to have a guy that could play second pairing, but when an injury comes up lets deal with it then. If we get another second pairing guy than we have way too much defense and also two NHL caliber defensemen sitting.

If we are going to trade assets, it has to be for sniper.

ok how many NHL caliber defensemen do you expect to pay to play in the AHL?

Think this signing means the end of Spaling. You have Clune, Gaustad, Hendricks, Nystrom. Spaling right now looks to be the odd man out.

Not many, but again, I don't even see a call-up worthy D. Are guys like Valentine and Jarvinen ready to fill in for an extended time if needed?

Maybe I'm just too squeamish after last season's rash of injuries.

Agreed. Man I wish we could get a legit scorer for Goose and his $3.5.

Only six can play at a time.
We have seven. We are good. If two guys get hurt, we may need to get a cheap ufa maybe. Something along the lines of bouillon/hillen. Not great but would do for short term.

maplepred 07-17-2013 01:28 PM

Gonna miss spals. I think he was solid, someone will definite grab him. Maybe he goes to Winnipeg to rejoin Hali. They played on ohl for rangers together as well.

remember we'd have to have two extended injuries to have to tap into the true AHL only level defensemen.

but anyway back on topic, glad for Clune... he'll probably be a healthy scratch a lot, but Im sure he's happy to have guaranteed money.

It's a shame too. I'd much rather see Clune on the ice than Smith who's starting to look like he's Blum'ing out.

You can't consider Ekholm NHL ready yet and Jones is not a garantee to make the team either. I am probably more concerned about our D right now than anything honestly. We are relying way to much on guys with little to no experience. Josi while playing well last season has yet to even play through an 82 game schedule. We only have 2 d-men that have...

I'll add I love that we are keeping Clune long term and he adds solid depth to our forward group.

as much as I like Clune, we need someone better than him in Smiths spot.
if Smith goes it needs to be to make way for Beck or someone we traded for.

Our 4th line is going to be so phyical, and this coming year will have a compressed schedule, so I imagine Clune will frequently give Nystrom or Hendricks a night off if they are banged up
