Penguins #2 prospect

Pouliot wins and will probably be followed by half a dozen other defensemen. Added nobody this time because Rust, Segalla, Samuelsson, Archibald, Farnham, Guentzel and Maguire all were mentioned only once, and we don't really need more options right now. I'm keeping score of all the write-ins though so those weren't for naught.

2013 poll results
#1 Derrick Pouliot (56,68%)

And since somebody asked in the other thread...

Here are the ones I have hosted:

2008 (Top 10 only. Goligoski beats Caputi for #1, CPZ gets 10th)
2009 (Tangradi begins his run as poll darling, Caputi still strong at #3)
2010 (Tangradi ahead of Despres and Bennett)
2011 (Despres takes over 1st from Tangradi, Bennett still 3rd)
2012 (a top 25 actually, Morrow beats Despres in a photo finish for 1st place)

Trivia:
- every poll winner so far has been traded later, except for Despres
- Veilleux finished 4th for three consecutive years before crashing down the ranks
- Strait and Bortuzzo were models of consistency, always bottom half of the top 10 (Bort was in four polls, Strait in all five)
- Joe Vitale's highest ever ranking was 12th in 2009, he would poll worse the closer he got to the NHL
- only two goalies cracked any top 10 (Curry 9th in 2008, Thiessen 10th in 2011)

I voted Maatta, but it was a tough decision between he and Harrington for me. I gave Maatta the edge on upside, but Harrington is a much safer bet to make the NHL.

BrunoPuntzJones 07-24-2013 11:35 AM

I voted for Dumoulin. His ceiling may be thought of as lower than Pouliot, Maatta, or Harrington but I think he's closer to making his mark in the NHL.

this. If I could have, I'd have voted 1A, 1B and 1C.

johnniewalker 07-24-2013 11:45 AM

I went Dumoulin. He is closest to the NHL of the other guys that were close (Harrington, Maata) and though his ceiling is lower, I think closeness of being ready trumps ceiling.

Randy Butternubs 07-24-2013 12:10 PM

Maatta.

Add Bryan Rust.

Tasty Biscuits 07-24-2013 12:11 PM

This will be over quickly.

Agree we really don't need to be adding yet, but Archibald and Guentzel would definitely be my first additions once they start happening.

Well, I know that (at least) 35% of this year's top 20 will be different that last year's.

Muscles4Malkin 07-24-2013 01:12 PM

Määttä for sure.

Ragamuffin Gunner 07-24-2013 01:17 PM

should just skip to #3

Beauner 07-24-2013 01:30 PM

I didn't vote in the first one because it was too close of a call for me.

This one's easy- Maatta. Should just close this one now.

and the next one will be Harrington in a landslide.

KareemTrustfund 07-24-2013 01:47 PM

Olli Maatta is the obvious choice.

Also, Harrison Ruopp and Phillip Samuelsson should be added before Bryan Rust.

Olli Maatta

Skill

Maatta has a really good shot and likes to use it. I'm not so sure it’s overly hard but he does get it on net and is smart enough to understand shooting lanes.

Maatta can really zip a puck tape to tape. He used to force a lot of plays during his draft year but has really cleaned up that part of his game. I'm hoping the Pens can walk the fine line of letting him do his thing while curbing bad habits. I do think that once becoming a pro he will simplify his game a little bit more and the cleaner pro game around him will help him out.

Maatta covers a lot of ice and is a very active player. I don't think he's that fast right now but his foot speed is good and he keeps his legs churning. In terms of a look on the ice he reminds me a lot of a young Gonchar but I think he’ll be more like a Mattais Ohlund or Roman Hamrlik type.

Physical game

Maatta has good size and battles even though he is not a heavy hitter. He is involved all over the ice and pressures pucks well. He ties up players in front of the net, blocks shots and will take hits to make the right play. He's a gamer and competes up and down the ice. Also want to mention that he will stick up for himself and his team.

Outlook

Maatta has cut down on the risk taking and cleaned up his game by leaps and bounds. He jumps up into the play but has learned to skate in and skate out. He has simplified parts of his game and the question is if he can do that while also putting up numbers. The Pens seem to really like active defenseman so maybe he'll fit right in and they groom him the right way. I thought he was the best player in this years prospect game and seems ready for the pro game.

Olli Maatta

Next poll.

wej20 07-24-2013 02:23 PM

Maatta, Dumoulin and Harrington are all pretty close but I went with Maatta

SprootsMasterFlex 07-24-2013 02:24 PM

Wow, this was over within an hour of votes. LOL

Maatta. Now onto #3...

Pretty much

I think the OP should consider making it 24 hours rather than 48

Whakahere 07-24-2013 02:26 PM

Dumoulin, projects to be a top 4 defenceman, has size and has done well in the AHL and camp this year. To me this trumps the unknown ability of Määttä who projects to be a top 4 defenceman ...... :D

I gotta go again with my boy Tom Kuhnhackl. It seems like most of the pens top prospects hyped on this site end up working at McDonalds eventually, so I am pulling for a dark horse.

Luca Caputi, Anegelo Esposito, Chris Bourque and Eric Tangradi say hello.

Simon Despres, Beau Bennett and Brian Strait say hello right back. 2,4 and 10 from last year's poll are all going to be NHL regulars this year. And Bortuzzo may be as well. That's not too bad.
