Cody Franson

Cody Franson
6'5" 212 lbs
45 gms - 4 gls, 25 asts, 29 pts
RFA w/no arbitration rights

A giant, offensively minded d-man with a very accurate shot. Top 4 ES, Top pair PP. Leafs would be looking for a similar calibre d-man, just with more emphasis on the defensive game. Preferably a bit of a veteran. Preferably right handed.

Any takers?

Players of interest include:
-Barrett Jackman
-Brooks Orpik
-Niklas Hjalmarsson

would hate to see him go.... im sure quite a few teams are calling about him.

FishManSam 07-25-2013 10:38 AM

Worth more to Toronto then any other team, if he's traded it's for an overpayment. Our only RHD dman.

I guess I'm more concerned with the behind the scenes stuff. He wasn't happy at the start of the year, wasn't happy last year, this guy probably doesn't care that we have limited cap space. Plus, I heard Jonas Siegel on TSN Radio this morning say the idea has been kicked around internally.

Explain how this works? You have a young d, who plenty viewed has having high upside while with Nashville, who blossomed last year. He is huge, he can shoot, he puts up points, and he isn't a liability. He is a desirable player. Why is he worthless?

He is absolutely a desireable player, although he is a bit of a liaility in the defensive zone when not paired with a more defensive-minded partner; no one is claiming he is worthless...Toronto has alot of good puck-moving Dmen in the system and are in need of a big, defensive-minded crease-clearer with some skill...that's really the main reason you see a few Cody Franson trade proposals...well, that and he thinks he's worth a little more than he may be actually worth, but all players do that...;)

Guardian452 07-25-2013 10:58 AM

Considering the contracts the Leafs gave Gunnarsson and Clarke, I don't see Franson and Kadri signing for anything less than a $3.0 million AAV each.

My qualm is down the road, I just don't see a spot for him. I like him as a player, always did, but I just don't see any reasonable way you find room for him at his ~3M cap hit in 2 or 3 years when you have Phaneuf, Gardiner, and Rielly. May as well move him while he has some rfa years and some controllability cost wise, to a team with surplus veteran defensive guys.

Dark Knight 07-25-2013 11:00 AM

He's my favorite Leafs defenseman. He absolutely needs to be retained.

As far as value goes, he is definitely worth a good prospect.

I would love to trade him for someone like a Ryan Sproul or Jamie Oleksiak.

if Nonis lets him go, im seriously going to question his well being for the team. How do you let a player like franson go? He put up 29 points in 45 games. Which would translate to about a low 50 point season. Plus he's the only defense man who can hit the net with a quick shot. Its gonna be frusterating watching phaneuf miss high every shot he takes when franson's gone.

WilliamNylander 07-25-2013 11:42 AM

I doubt we move Franson for anything less than a serious overpayment. He's finally starting to hit his potential and was one of our best dmen last season (with 4th most TOI) and in the playoffs.

Tripod 07-25-2013 11:43 AM

Franson for Nik Grossmann.

It's not like he "lets him go". There will be a return of presumably near equal value haha.

HOCKEYGOON 07-25-2013 12:03 PM

I really have no idea what $ number and term he's looking for.

Could be $4M plus which would be tough to swallow with his limited time in the NHL so far.

willyjones 07-25-2013 12:14 PM

as a leafs fan, i hope he stays, but something has to be going on behind the scenes. Last year he signed at the last minute, has a break out year and we hear nothing, does not file for arbitration, so he could be offer-sheeted. Cody deserves a spot on this team in the top 4, he deserves 3 m a year contract. if possible lock him up 3 mil a year to 3.5 for 4 years. I think if phaneuf walks becasue of money issues, our young core with franson, (if Signed) gunner, reilly, gardiner , ranger, and fraser/blacker will do just fine.

I'd consider it, but I imagine Pittsburgh wants a forward or prospect coming back. Too many D as it stands.

How is he going to get to Pittsburgh? 3 way deal?

Martin, Orpik, Letang, Scuderi, Depres, Engelland, and Bortuzzo in addition to a trove of high-end d prospects knocking on the door like Pouliot, Dumoulin, Harrington, and Maata. Of course you have Grossman as well assuming you don't trade him.

Okay guys, I'm dumb. Got him mixed up with Niskanen. Goes back to their days in Dallas.

With that being said, Grossman does make some sense.

Philly...not Pitt. Easy mistake though.

Don't listen to him. We aren't trading Franson for Grossman

Does he not fit what the OP was looking for? A Big, defensive D-man that blocks lots of shots. And is only 28 so has lots of hockey left.
