Douglas Murray

Has there been anything mentioned as to why this guy hasn't signed yet? He's a pretty serviceable, physical defenseman. I would have thought a team like Carolina or NYI would have snatched this guy up by now.

BlueDream 07-27-2013 07:36 PM

Yeah bit surprised he's still available as well. I assume his poor skating scares a lot of teams.

However, the guy is an absolute truck. There's no room for him on my team, but if I were a fan of many other teams around the NHL I would love to have him as a #6 or even just a 7th d-man that can fill in when teams need some more physicality.

Perhaps his asking price was too high and now he'll have to bring it down. He'll probably find a spot eventually.

wej20 07-27-2013 07:37 PM

probably wants too much money or is waiting to see if spots open up after trades. With the salary cap going down a lot of guys at Murray's level are getting squeezed.

don28 07-27-2013 07:38 PM

My guess would be limited mobility and issues with his weight being too high at times. He's a rugged defensive defenseman, but lack of foot speed is holding him back. I can't speak about Carolina, but the Islanders have Matt Carkner already. They can't afford another big, slow defenseman.

Yep. We have a mobile defense, Carkner serves his role very well and adding Murray is pointless with him on board.

Where in the world have weight problems come into play with Doug? Never heard anything of the sort when he was in SJ and then he goes to PIT and I heard a lot of people calling him fat which is the complete opposite of what he actually is. Guy has almost no fat on him, pure muscle.

He hasn't signed because he is no longer good.

Mr Misty 07-27-2013 07:50 PM

Old and slow, also nobody has much room to add salary

Monument 07-27-2013 09:12 PM

The Rangers need a guy like that, but his salary demands are probably way too high and they still have yet to sign Stepan.

orby 07-27-2013 09:46 PM

he fills a very specific niche that not many teams will be chomping at the bit to pay a premium for. it wouldn't completely stun me to see him go to the KHL but I think someone will bite on him for before the offseason is over

MarleauApologist 07-27-2013 09:54 PM

He's horribad. A team that signs him is an unhappy team.

This. He looked like a pylon against the Isles, and I can only recall one semi-big hit he threw in the playoffs. Maybe he ends up in SEL?

nmbr_24 07-27-2013 10:08 PM

His mobility was exposed as being pretty limited in the playoffs. San Jose traded him for that exact reason.

The Thin White Duke 07-27-2013 10:17 PM

I could see the Leafs showing some interest if negotiations with Fraser don't go through, provided Murray would take around 2 mil or so.

Staal
Girardi
McDonagh
Stralman
Del Zotto
Moore
Falk
McIlrath

Please tell me where in god you see him fitting in. He is not even better than our 7th D-man. And our top 6 he is nowhere near. Like literally not in the same realm.

Douglas Murray is a near pylon with his foot speed in the NHL, no chance he goes to the K. I can't see him bringing value to a KHL team. The game is less physical and way faster, two things that don't bode well for him.

Gwydyr 07-27-2013 11:32 PM

It's kind of funny how I'd seen some Penguins fans giving him upwards of 2 million dollars in cap projections (before the Scuderi signing). Now, it seems as though he'll be lucky to get around a million flat.

Captain Hook 07-27-2013 11:48 PM

I thought he was fairly solid with the Pens. He's strictly a bottom pairing guy because his lack of mobility gets exposed in bigger roles against better players. He did bolster the Pens struggling PK though.

I'm guessing he just isn't in a hurry to sign for the dirt cheap offers teams are likely making him. He can sit around and hope a team gets desperate and offers him an overpayment and sign one of those dirt cheap offers last minute if that doesn't happen.

Captain Mittens* 07-28-2013 11:32 AM

Same problem as Gilbert. There isn't enough money to go around.

I like how sheep was praised at the deadline but he overpaid for both Murray and morrow at the deadline. No ones signed them yet

BigDaddyLurch 07-28-2013 11:55 AM

I'd rather have Volchenkov...that in itself should say something...;)

McDonald19 07-28-2013 11:56 AM

Wants top 4 money, but he is a third pairing guy now.

true. i was just thinking Europe in general, not necessary the KHL, but you're right, in less physical leagues his skill set is even more suspect. like i said, he fills a VERY specific role - "big guy who can clear the crease and knock people around, but not really do anything else" - that I don't see many teams in the league willing to pay $2 million for. I have a feeling he'll be a last minute addition at a cheap price if he decides to stay in the NHL

eXile59 07-28-2013 12:20 PM

I can't believe there isn't a team that doesn't want a guy to clear the front of the net for their goaltender. I have to imagine he's just asking for too much money.

Hatrick Marleau 07-28-2013 12:57 PM

Too slow for the NHL.

Yep, it only too 465 NHL games and 72 playoff games to figure that out, right?
