Expansion

Apparently Bettman is pushing hard for an expansion team in Seattle

http://www.rotoworld.com/playernews/nhl/hockey

This is really interesting not because no one saw a team in Seattle coming, but because most thought it would be a relocated team. The article mentions that now with there being 16 teams in the east, and only 14 in the west. two more teams out west makes sense. Any way. Find it all interesting because where else out west would you expand?? Maybe they will put another team in TO or Quebec City and just make them play in the west until they can realign again.

Maybe just expand to Seattle soon, and wait for KC/Vegas/Portland to get their act together.

Vegas would be sick if it was actually viable.

I Thinks it would be awesome to add both Portland and Seattle, then move Phoenix to the Central Division

Give hopefully some great rivalries and keep the divisions fairly accurate

Me and a buddy were just talking about this, an arena right on the strip. You think they could pack it all year just with Canadians coming down to watch.

BarDownBobo 07-31-2013 04:10 PM

If expansion is happening its gotta be Seattle and Quebec.

T-Funk 07-31-2013 04:11 PM

I'd definitely make it down to the couple Oilers road games in Vegas.

you would think. Maybe they will just give Quebec the Winnipeg treatment and make them play in the west for a couple years.

and Ya, Vegas, I imagine the oilers playing their would be packed with Oil fans. Probably would even be louder since all the Edmonton people down their would be wasted and ready to party.

Professional sports don't work in Vegas.

Oscar Acosta 07-31-2013 04:23 PM

Vegas. The American city where you can do anything you want instead of watching hockey.

Not going to work.

joestevens29 07-31-2013 04:25 PM

Another team that close has to be a plus for Western Canadian teams.

Why not?

honest question, we were talking about it the other day. Is it that they don't work, or is it because no one has tried.

hellacious 07-31-2013 04:34 PM

Something has to give. my guess is Seattle, Vegas, Kansas in the west Quebec in the east. There is no way Toronto gets one. MLSE would hire every lawyer in the world to make sure of it.

Thanks. thought it said that many have considered it. The major concern seems to be that people don't really want to watch sports there. Not so much the gambling. Still no one has tried yet, so can't say it won't work. I imagine it is going to happen at some point.

If Las Vegas were to get some pro sports team, they should name them the Typhoons, because Vegas is the place where people blow all their money!

SeriousBusiness 07-31-2013 04:44 PM

I don't see why a combo hockey/indoor sports arena which could also be used for concerts and other shows wouldn't work on the strip. Doesn't have to have a huge capacity either. Attendees could get to whatever casino owns the arena, gamble a bit til the game, then afterwards have dinner and drinks there.

If marketed properly, every Oilers/Flames/Canucks/Jets game would be well attended from people coming down alone.

The NHL should let Vegas, who knows how to market things better than they do, give an NHL team a shot.

The attendance couldn't be any worse than most of the teams in the south east.

Yup, pretty much my thoughts.

Fully agreed. It could also really raise the NHL's profile in the US.

Of course Las Vegas doesn't have any pro sports teams. I mean, if the CFL won't work there, nothing will. :naughty:

hellacious 07-31-2013 05:06 PM

I think Vegas would work for both the NBA and NHL as a Joint venture. It would rely heavily on other teams selling packages to season ticket holders and fans but they should be able to garner a good walk up crowd as well. It would be weird seeing a team playing away every time they step on the ice but over time they should be able to establish a fanbase that would be internationally based as opposed to regionally based that most teams have. Definitely a first in pro sports unless you count the CFL. Its all about revenue sharing and all teams well benefit financially. The fans would benefit as well. I would go there in a hart beat.

Why the hell would Vegas get a hockey team?

Quebec, like Winnipeg, deserves a team after all these rough years. Portland and Seattle going into the league together would be pretty cool though and would lead to an insta-rivalry.

Best case scenario for me:
-expansion teams to Seattle and Portland
-move Nashville, Florida, or Arizona (seriously why the **** is the NHL wasting so much time and resource trying to keep this embarrassment of a franchise in the league) to Quebec.

I agree on the Quebec thing. However we are assuming Bettman wants two expansion teams out west.

I could just as easily say why in the hell would you move a team to Portland?? It isn't that big of a city. They don't have much for Hockey culutre ect.

I don't know I think Vegas would be as good of a bet as Portland.

The East has more than enough teams. If Quebec wants a team, they should get Florida.

The West needs 2 more teams still to balance out all the whining about uneven divisions.

Ya, It seems ideally we would have expansion to Seattle and Vegas/Portland/KC really which ever would be fine. Then relocate the east. Move Florida up to QC, maybe eventually Pheonix to Greater TO, then realign again.
