HOH Newspaper Archive Library
A very basic idea, centralizing all the links to the various historic hockey newspaper articles found in this and other board forums. Sub categories - magazines, books, internet venues are more than welcome.

The most popular source for newspaper articles is the Google Newspaper Archives:

Links to other sources, free and subscription, are welcome and will be posted here as they are contributed.

Discussions about research techniques, projects, technical issues and other topics are encouraged.

The discovery and contribution of articles, especially European and obscure sources is the main focus. Not limited to the NHL or recognized leagues like the WHA, PCHA, etc. Each article makes a difference.

The actual indexing will evolve as this project advances.

Join in, contribute and learn from the experience.

I think that this will be a great chance to pull together some of the more interesting articles available out there through Google.

Happy hunting, all!

through my work, i have access to http://www.lexis.com/ which is a large database of historical newspapers. i've only used it once for HOH purposes (it was very helpful for finding articles from canadian and US newspapers from right after the '90 trade deadline to see what major hockey writers were saying, and not saying, about the value of a certain player who'd changed teams), but i'm happy to perform searches for those who don't have access to it. PM me if necessary.

This is one of my favorite articles on the decline and fall of Jim Craig, Miracle on Ice hero:

Goaltending's all about confidence, and when it goes, it goes fast (more likely, the 1980 miracle was Craig riding a high wave, rather than his post-miracle career being a low).

Killion 08-02-2013 08:26 PM

^^^ Thats interesting. I was unaware of his injuries & legal issues post 1980, first time Ive read any of it first person singular in an interview like that... and good job Im on a laptop, that last page is scanned in sideways.

Taco, excellent Jim Craig article and a prime example of the gems that are available outside traditional NHL and hockey markets.

Canadian Newsstand is another great database resource for digitally-archived articles from the major Canadian news agencies. It is a subscription-based service, however.

Canadian Newsstand™ offers unparalleled access to the full text of nearly 300 newspapers from Canada's leading publishers, including The Globe and Mail.

This full text database includes the complete available electronic backfile for most newspapers, providing full access to the articles, columns, editorials, and features. Some backfiles date as far back as the late 1970s and 1980s. Canadian Newsstand content is updated daily so researchers always have timely access to new information.

The core of the database is the Canadian Major Dailies collection which includes national and leading regional newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, National Post, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, Regina Leader Post, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun and the Victoria Times Colonist.

If you have not already I strongly suggest your local library.

With mine it gives me online access to access.newspaperarchive.com & ProQuest Newsstand as well as online version of my local newspaper (although it only goes back to 1988). Of course this is at no charge. The only thing you need is a library card.

I am also a member of SABR which gives me access to The Sporting News database up until 2003.

Academic libraries are great in this regard. Especially long established universities - McGill, Toronto, Harvard, etc plus they network. Alumni in many instances receive perks.

Also national or state/provincial archives. Municipal or regional historical societies. Only drawbacks to government institutions is the red tape and a tendency to use pages to answer or explain when a sentence or a paragragh is enough. Advantages are that mandatory publication deposit laws mean that since enactment the articles are available. Also most jurisdictions make an effort to acquire pre deposit law materials. It's there, question of access.
