What Would Gretzky Go For Today?

Thought this would be an interesting discussion given that people seem to be making a big deal about the Gretzky deal being 25 years ago.

Consider his stats from the preceding four seasons (GP-G-A-+/-):

1984-85 Edmonton Oilers NHL 80 73 135 208 98
1985-86 Edmonton Oilers NHL 80 52 163 215 71
1986-87 Edmonton Oilers NHL 79 62 121 183 70
1987-88 Edmonton Oilers NHL 64 40 109 149 39

Had he stayed healthy during the last season, him and Lemieux would've cleared the rest of the scoring race by 30-40 points. Prior to this, he was winning the scoring race by upwards of 70 points. He's 27 y/o and has 4 cups.

Let's say this is taking place today, with today's rosters+Gretzky, and the Oilers are shopping him around (a trade request has not been made public). What would your team offer for a player this dominant? Assume he's making max salary on a multi-year deal.

only 149 points? clearly on a sharp decline. maybe abdelkader and a 2nd

Benedict Kovalchuk 08-08-2013 02:13 PM

Well Edmonton clearly needs two things: extensive grit, and futures. As such, the Isles will offer Carkner, Boulton, and a 1st.

CoachBadkitten 08-08-2013 02:14 PM

Nazem Kadri if you're lucky.

jiggy35 08-08-2013 02:15 PM

Crosby + Malkin

ShootIt 08-08-2013 02:15 PM

Leafs would be stupid to consider this. :sarcasm:

Cap Max, term max.

In exchange you're probably giving 4-5 firsts and a bunch of money, maybe $25,000,000 up front.
Oh, what would MY team offer? We retract the cash, make it four firsts and a conditional second if we reach the Conference finals.

phlocky 08-08-2013 02:20 PM

Honestly, it would most likely look very similar to what he went for back then. Even though he'd be even more valuable than Sid he just wouldn't return the high volume of high end talent you'd think because teams just can't afford to gut themselves for one player even if that player was Wayne (or Sid or Geno). There have been more than a few trades of very high end players over the years and it's NEVER the crazy"asking prices" of fans on here. Players like that only become available for very specific reasons and the team trading them are NEVER in the drivers seat.

Landesgod. Final offer.

Mc5RingsAndABeer 08-08-2013 02:24 PM

Perhaps double what Lindros went for.

Gretzky wasn't traded back then, he was sold.

If that had been an actual hockey trade the Oilers would have received a lot more then they did.

BoldMcNewLettuce 08-08-2013 02:25 PM

What about after his first season?

McShogun99 08-08-2013 02:25 PM

I could see him going for 4 firsts, a couple high end prospects and a roster player, no cash since that is not allowed today.

Aela* 08-08-2013 02:27 PM

Jokinen + Scheifele + 2014 1st + 2015 1st + Setoguchi + Clitsome + Josh Morrissey

Depends...at the trade deadline if his contract expires in the summer probably 2 1st rounders, Roster player and 1-2 good prospects.

If in midst of a long term contract he probably would be too much to pay. Like trading for Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos or Ovechkin. If he declared he wanted out like Pronger the price obviously goes down. Nobody can guess what that would be though.

That being said why would anyone trade for him? He is worthless outside of Edmonton :naughty:
