Stick in skates

In weekly shinny I was matched up against a great player. I was always caught reaching and lunging for the puck. One time it was in his skates as he was moving forward and I tried to play it and so did he. My stick then became tangled up in his skates a little and I tried to remove it. What is the good sportsman's play for me and what would have been at a minimum following the rules?

If there's no easy way to wrestle my stick away, I typically just let go of it and recover it later. Holding on to it could inhibit the other guy's movement and so be more susceptible to injury for him and penalty for you.
