Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Michael D. Gillis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed defenceman Andrew Alberts.
Not surprising since Fistric and Murray were signed recently.

Bobby Lou 08-22-2013 04:15 PM

Yeah, obvious move. Hello, last year's team.

y2kcanucks 08-22-2013 04:16 PM

****! I was really hoping that we'd be finally rid of Alberts.

Hope it's only 1 year.

Maybe if we send some rainbow and wishes they'll improve. Think positive. ;)

Clear Cut 08-22-2013 04:16 PM

Pure depth move, I don't expect him to play more than 20 games.

On a sidenote, it looks Canucks have filled out their Roster:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Booth-Kesler-Kassian
Higgins-Gaunce/Schroeder-Hansen
Sestito-Richardson-Wiese

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Tanev
Garrison-Weber
Alberts

StringerBell 08-22-2013 04:17 PM

That should fill out the roster I would think. Good depth signing by "Michael D. Gillis".

Yes, because signing a different depth d-man would have made us a completely different team. How could Gillis do this...

I like how some people think a coaching change will do absolutely nothing for a team.

He was solid last year IMO

Well, it's last year's team...

MINUS Cory Schneider
MINUS Derek Roy
MINUS Mason Raymond (likely)
MINUS Max Lapierre

PLUS Brad Richardson
PLUS Mike Santorelli

In other words, we're worse. Pretty significantly worse.

I have no problem with that.

Let's ignore the fact that Edler and Bieksa had a bad season, Kesler and Booth missed a majority of the season, Schroeder and Kassian are now older and have more experience, no more goalie controversy to distract a certain player, and a new coaching staff.

Alberts played very well in the second half of last season. Great re-signing.

Socratic Method Man 08-22-2013 04:22 PM

Was hoping we'd sign either Murray or Alberts. I'm very happy with this, we have the room and capspace, and insurance on the backend is crucial to success in this league, especially in the playoffs.

Plus Alberts gives us some nice bite.

MS 08-22-2013 04:22 PM

Bleh. Have never been a fan. Unplayable for the most part in the playoffs.

Probably played the best he ever has over the last 15-20 games of last year, but that's not saying much. Still has no skill level and poor gap control in his own zone.

So depressing. That's what you get for having an agent for a GM, no idea how to build a team.

MikeK 08-22-2013 04:23 PM

Yeah, I don't see much of anything that makes us stronger. This move is another "meh" This team, while good, is not built for playoff success. I expect the same results as the last 2 seasons. Lots of hype during regs but flat into playoffs.

Hopefully we get to see some young kids get a chance to play more. That is about the only thing I am looking forward to this season.

sk8er 08-22-2013 04:24 PM

Okay, hands up.....who's upset over THIS signing? The usual suspects I would imagine.
I think He played well enough last season to be resigned. He's big and has a mean streak, and ill wager he is faster than Douglas Murray...

Bobby Lou 08-22-2013 04:24 PM

It's basically the same team as last year ... I don't even include Roy since he barely played for us. Lapierre and Richardson are basically interchangeable. Meh, Raymond ... net neutral.

Glad you were able to determine we're significantly worse ahead of the season. I guess there's no need to play the games. Do you mind letting me know what our record will be just so I know?

yup. i hope tortorella forces him to improve his signature move of "clear it off the glass instead of a breakout pass"

I'm kind of confused about the "we're" part.....(at least part of the contraction - "we").

As to this signing....I'll reserve judgement based on what he signed for.

timw33 08-22-2013 04:32 PM

Bleh, I hope it's 1 year sub 1M.

That's pretty much Tortorella's general breakout strategy aside from the stretch pass. So Alberts would probably play pretty well if given #6 ice time.

Linden* 08-22-2013 04:33 PM

Like this signing, AA had a strong year last year
