Most useless or inaccurate stat in hockey?

My vote goes for Attendance stats.

It gets ranked on how high your yearly attendance average is, when it should be a percentage based stat. A team like Winnipeg who has a smaller arena will always be in the bottom half even if they sell out. Which makes no sense to me.

Or the Canucks who have been selling out their arena since 2003 is 10th in the league. Makes zero sense.

EpicGingy 08-23-2013 03:46 PM

Plus/Minus.

That stat is more about a players team than the player himself.

Kris Chreider 08-23-2013 03:48 PM

+/-.

Of all stats out there, you focus on attendance numbers? WTF?

I'm just pointing that out since we never talk about them, since they are useless.

montador 08-23-2013 03:51 PM

Wins (for goalies)

Kane One 08-23-2013 03:51 PM

Hits.

Flair Hay 08-23-2013 03:52 PM

+/-

People still use that stat in arguments. It's basically the HF way to tell that someone doesn't know what they're talking about. Anyone who tries it sticks out like a sore thumb in my eyes, anyway. On some cases it has some context, but other than that it is so misleading sometimes.

JeffMangum 08-23-2013 03:54 PM

Point totals can paint an inaccurate picture of the true capabalities/effectiveness of a player.

Overall, I'd say +/- is the most misleading stat — it's more a team stat, than anything.

Corsi.

Good thing hockey isn't overrun by Sabremetric nerds like baseball is.

Beastly Bozak 08-23-2013 03:57 PM

Corsi

Pim.

When you look at stats league-wide, it's +/-.

However, +/- can be very relevant when comparing players on the same team.

bigbuffalo313 08-23-2013 03:59 PM

+/- you could be a great defensive player but you play on the flyers or lightning and you become a minus player.

Beef Invictus 08-23-2013 04:00 PM

Hits.

Ceremony 08-23-2013 04:00 PM

+/-, then anything that's compiled by people watching the game subjectively.

candyman82 08-23-2013 04:04 PM

Hits, especially for home teams

WarriorofTime 08-23-2013 04:07 PM

+/- is actually incredibly underrated on these boards. Of course it's a context driven stat. That's a given. But looking at +/- over a long period of time (think multiple years) is definitely worthwhile.

+/- is much more reflective of dumb luck than the team he's on.

Tralfamadore 08-23-2013 04:08 PM

I'll also +/-

The only time I use it is when I'm comparing players on the same team. If 2/3 of a team are minus players and one player is a high positive then it can be used as either an indicator of good defense or an indicator of that player having played very sheltered minutes.

Crease 08-23-2013 04:10 PM

Cup counting.

kingsholygrail 08-23-2013 04:11 PM

I'll say +/- for inaccuracy in determining the value of a player.

Hits for uselessness.
