Heavyweight Enforcer to Edmonton?

Expect EDM to be on lookout for a heavyweight fighter. Currently without that element but GM MacTavish and HC Eakins believe it's required.
There were strong rumors this summer that the Oilers were interested in young Kings LW Kyle Clifford, though I wouldn't necessarily consider him a heavyweight enforcer, he can still chuck 'em with some tough customers.

Not sure if the Kings would like to make one of their division rivals any tougher, or what other options are available for Edmonton to fill that role, but my guess is that Georges Laraque did not get an invitation to attend Oilers' training camp.

Frazer McLaren may be available.

Sharppi 09-11-2013 01:28 PM

Zenon Konopka for a 5th round pick?

SLAPSHOT723 09-11-2013 01:34 PM

For the love of all things hockey take Eric Boulton. I still will not understand why he had to be re-signed.

noway 09-11-2013 01:35 PM

Get Steve MacIntyre back (if you can figure out why you let him go in the first place).

Quares27 09-11-2013 01:35 PM

Should just go into the season and if they feel they need one after playing games then get one off waivers

thecloser 09-11-2013 01:37 PM

enforcer's i'd want are scott, mclaren, westgarth, or thornton, or engelland, or orr. haha. my list got carried away and i doubt anyone other than mclaren are available....

TOGuy14 09-11-2013 01:37 PM

Frazer McLaren is redundant in Toronto with a healthy Orr.

Don't know if Nonis and Carlyle are trying to horde goons though

danyhabsfan 09-11-2013 01:38 PM

Parros for a 1st :handclap:

Orr was healthy and they still brought McLaren in and played him so obviously not

Mac T didn't have the time of day for fighters who couldn't contribute positively in other aspects of the game during his time as a coach of the Oilers. I doubt his opinion of those types of guys has changed much now that he's the GM.

I don't expect anything to come of this. I would be shocked if the Oilers actually acquired a heavyweight of any kind.

McDonald19 09-11-2013 01:46 PM

Someone will be available on waivers in 10 days or so.

Steve Mac is one.

s7ark 09-11-2013 01:47 PM

I suppose McLaren could be a target. Odd that they are looking for a guy like that when all summer MacT was talking about adding guys that can play. Maybe he feels he needs one nuclear option in case teams start taking liberties?

It it costs more than a 6th or 7th I would hope MacT would just wait for waiver candidates.

Considering how much physical abuse Taylor Hall took without any retribution, I would think they want somebody to make sure that happens less often. Then again, they did have a waste of a roster spot around the team in Darcy Hordichuk who didn't detract others from taking liberties against the Oilers.

Who in the Pacific actually has a "heavyweight" to match up against?

SupremeTeam16 09-11-2013 01:52 PM

It would of been nice to snag Clifford from LA, he's not really a heavyweight but he can throw em and he is still a functional player.

Oilers don't have much in the way of fighting among skill/tough hybrids or middleweights either.

joestevens29 09-11-2013 01:59 PM

For what it's worth Dan Tencer said we are looking for a guy in the mold of Rosehill or Peluso.

That was my guess for awhile as earlier in the summer the media was 100% sure someone would be coming in to do some protection. And Mac is no stranger to waivers.

bud12 09-11-2013 02:03 PM

PL3 on a 2-way contract should be your target

bland 09-11-2013 02:03 PM

The only real "toughness" that matters is having skill players who can persevere and succeed without needing protection against physical play. No tough guy is going to change that.

If Edmonton is soft, its due to drafting talented but meek players without putting enough emphasis on competitive spirit. There is at least one, likely two, too many flashy players in that current top 6.

TheOllieC 09-11-2013 02:05 PM

Westgarth :laugh::laugh::laugh:

topchowda 09-11-2013 02:06 PM

NOOOOOO. And here I thought MacT had progressed from the days where GMs thought face punchers should actually take a roster spot. He said so many positive things in his interviews about wanting players that can play the game. I am hoping this is just a PTO or some wild rumour.

Enforcers have almost no role in todays NHL. They cant play hockey, cant score, cant defend. All they do is dump the puck in, give up possession and punch some faces once every couple games.

Have we not realized that enforcers dont really "protect" the skills guys or scare of other goons from going after them. Its such a stupid logic. Goons and pests love two things. A) To hit skilled players B) To fight. Getting an enforcer doesnt prevent A because the other guys love to do B.

The biggest deterrent is scoring on the PP. If your PP can make them pay, the opposing coach will staple the goon to the bench, and your skilled guys wont get run.

Bring in 4th lineplayers that can either score, prevent goals against, or do a mix of both by driving possession.

Despite what Don Cherry screams in your ear every saturday night. Enforcers are dumb, waste time on the ice and waste of a roster spot.

Plus they have Mike Brown, who is pretty bad, but less horrible than most face punchers
