Just wonder what the problem is with having a thread that can go where it will, interspersing occassional posts about business that doesn't relate anywhere else.

"The BoH OT/Lounge Thread. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

The BoH mods have decided to allow an Off Topic / Lounge thread for ongoing discussion of BoH related topics, discussion of OT topics that don't seem worthy of their own thread, interesting OT tangents moved from other BoH threads, and (of course) discussion of future thread titles.

The OT/Lounge thread is not limited to non-BoH topics.

The OT/Lounge thread is not designed to replace OT threads. BoH related OT threads (business issues in other sports, arena/stadium issues, sports media issues, sports labor/anti trust issues, etc) will be permitted as before.

If a new OT thread is light on substance, doesn't link to a new article/link on an issue, and basically rehashes issues already discussed in the OT/Lounge thread, then it may be merged into the OT thread - on a case by case basis.

In some cases, interesting digressions in existing threads - like the Mexican radio posts in the Phoenix marketing thread - may be moved to the OT/Lounge thread along with a mod post noting that and pointing people to the OT thread to continue the discussion.

This thread will be more loosely moderated than the "normal" BoH thread - similar to the more hands off approach (in terms of topic) that the mods took in the Phoenix mega-threads.

Gang, this isnt "Phoenix Megathread Part C". Please dont be posting pre-season nor when the season starts attendance figures in Glendale or elsewhere for that matter. This thread is for the "off-beat" & unusual, things tangentially connected to the BOH that are curious & arcane but lacking in enough weight to carry an entire thread.

With respect to the Coyotes: only if & when important developments occur will new threads be started. This isnt a thread to discuss City of Glendale business be it the Casino issue, Skeete filing a grievance nor anything else that has absolutely nothing to do with the BOH nor even the business of the Phoenix Coyotes. "95% less Coyotes" means exactly that. If you come across a curious or interesting story emanating from Arizona then ok, but if it ventures into the realms of what we once did discuss on the Megathread as in open season on everything, well, sorry, but it'll be deleted.

... ya, it is pretty amusing. Mostly AM band but there have been FM band stations and incredibly even TV stations based in Mexico who flagrantly disregard international agreements with the States. There was a station in Neuvo Laredo called La Tremenda that broadcast well into the Continental US from 2006-2008 in both Spanish & English. Contemporary music format. Believed as well to be messaging drugs & weapons gangs, Snakeheads etc. Taken out and off the air in a violent armed assault by the Mexican's. Just hilarious that the wattage these guys Jimmy'd so powerful that birds in flight coming near the towers fried in flight huh?

But the thread said improved? :dunno:

Killion 09-16-2013 02:07 PM

Improved with broader scope. If something of serious import does occur in Glendale rest assured a new thread will be started or if its something thats interesting that affects the team but not heavy enough to start a thread, that should be ok as well though we'll have to deal with it on a case x case basis.

Tinalera 09-16-2013 02:10 PM

I wonder if it will take a little bit for some to see that this ISNT a thread about the "team that shall not be named" (not referring to you Othmar :)-probably because the mega thread held that "top spot"-and with all the name changes that happened, may take a bit of adjustment that this really is an "OT" thread-though the first post and Killion's comment mention it :)

I also like the idea taken from the political board that at discretion of Moderators, topics in the "things that just aren't thread worthy" category being merged into here to be discussed further as part of the meltingpot.

I do also realize that as a result this thread may make some very strange paths into some seriously arcane territory :D

Indeed. And Id urge anyone thinking about posting anything Coyotes related to please think twice & be sensitive to our friends in Arizona who have been through much. If its interesting & relevant, no problem. But if its contentious, liable to go off into realms we best not visit, no thanks. :)

So why are the Panthers playing a preseason game at 2:30 on a Monday?

That's strange indeed. I recall, they did the 'day-night' split squad double header during the pre-season in 2011 as well. Nashville was the opponent too back then.

Can't blame them for trying to be different :)

No Fun Shogun 09-16-2013 03:17 PM

I'd blame 'em for at least not doing that on a weekend to try to somewhat recoup their loses, as your have to imagine that more fans would be inclined to go to a weekend versus weekday game when everything else is equal... and to avoid yet another embarrassing crowd shot picture.

Tinalera 09-16-2013 04:38 PM

Wonder if that has to do with arena scheduling and avoiding conflicts? I admit 2:30 on a Monday for preseason seems random, but I'm sure there's a reason for it.

It IS just preseason, teams fooling around with lines, strategies, seeing who makes the cut and who doesn't.

Now if they went and did a 2:30 game in Reg season on a Monday, that might be something else-but then again seems every year at least one team gets a totally random type time and day for a home game.

It's a doubleheader. I'm sure the night cap should do a bit better, but a doubleheader to begin with seems so strange.

It kind of feeds my own personal speculation that NHL teams-with double headers and "split squad" games, are trying to actually get the "preseason" out of the way (or at the very least, get the first 4-5 games out of the way, as it seems team management in a number of cases don't like the "going through the motions" of having 8-9 preseason games when 4 or 5 will do. The "quicker" they get through the games, the more "rest" players will get before the start of the season.

Hasn't there been debate going on in the NHL for a while now that they really don't need 9 preseason games?

Shawa666 09-16-2013 07:14 PM

The megathread is dead, long live the megathread.

They did that in Phoenix once - gave tickets to thousands of school age kids (I forget what the criteria was; something academically related) for a matinee preseason game on a school day as a reward. As a STH at the time, I thought "cool, one less preseason game I have to pay for" (...watch it... )

I don't know if that's the Panther's reason or not but it's the first thing that came to mind.

A hockey double header is certainly unique and odd that it would not be played on a weekend. However, I would speculate that it is a good way to shave travel costs and arena expenses. The arena is probably cheaper to open for an 8 hour stetch than two 5 hour time periods. This is assuming a 3 hour game and the gates opening an hour prior to puck drop.

Just some random speculation.

Iam not attempting to fuel an attendance debate but few markets around the league could draw for an afternoon game on a non holiday week day but fun for the fans with Monday off work.:handclap:

Bissonnette got the business...

To quote:

"As anticipated, the NHL handed Phoenix Coyotes tough guy Paul Bissonnette a 10-game suspension for leaving the bench (Rule 70.10) in the first period of Sunday’s wild preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings.

This suspension costs Bissonnette $37,820.51 and keeps him from regular season action until an Oct. 24 game against (wait for it) the Kings in Los Angeles."

Now, does the owner pay for the player's fine or does the player?
