Pens sign Dea to ELC

Jean-Sebastien Dea looked good at every camp he took part in this off-season so Shero gave him the standard 3-year, two-way entry-level contract today.

Dea was passed over in two drafts despite exploding last season for a combined 57 goals and 106 points in 82 regular season and playoff games. Smallish, right-shooting forward who can play both center or wing. The Pens training camp roster listed him as being 5'11" and 176 lbs so he's not that tiny. He returns to Rouyn-Nouranda for a third and final QMJHL season.

I think that is a good sleeper signing!

wej20 09-17-2013 08:41 AM

Nice, a bit more skilled than the some of the other undrafted guys Shero has signed.

skullman80 09-17-2013 08:43 AM

Can't hurt to have that kind of prospect in the system.

Jag68Sid87 09-17-2013 08:45 AM

Very pleased by this, mostly because the kid earned it.

Le Magnifique 66 09-17-2013 08:48 AM

That's great, watched him quite a few times last year and the offensive tools are definitely there for him. Hope it pans out down the road

Any relation to Ronny James Dea?

He's also kind of small so I'm pretty sure they are.

Dude has a statue made in his likeness. One day maybe his nephew will also have a statue placed in front of the CEC.

Let's hope DEA can clean up Bylsma's drug problem :sarcasm:

Well deserved, hopefully he winds up providing more than just minor league depth.

BlindWillyMcHurt 09-17-2013 12:02 PM

I was hoping that this was a foregone conclusion after how he's performed. Glad to see it. He has some obvious hurdles but the raw ability is absolutely there... which is much more than the majority of this team's forward prospects can claim.

I hope this is a joke.

It's Dio...

Crafton 09-17-2013 01:27 PM

anyone want to venture a guess as to his HF prospect grade?

i'd guess he picks up the same grade as Zlobin, 7D.

seems like an apt comparison - they both did some damage in the Q and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between a late sixth round pick and a UDFA. there are of course fundamental differences - by all account, Dea is a a better skater than Zlobin but Anton is probably better built.

it's nice to add another highly skilled forward to the prospect pool (i was half-worried that Shero would feel compelled to add someone like Hataway or Opperman)

next step: Nejezchleb!

Let's just hope Dea isn't a hockey diver.

Ugene Malkin 09-17-2013 02:52 PM

Low risk high reward (maybe) type of signing.

Keep doing these and you're bound to get one to stick.

Zirakzigil 09-17-2013 03:08 PM

Low risk signing. Nice to see some more winger potential added.

66-29-33 09-17-2013 05:39 PM

The next Marty St.Louis in the making. :sarcasm:

eXile59 09-17-2013 06:21 PM

Didn't cost any assets, not taking any ones job, & has potential. Can't be mad about that.

Great signing by the Pens.

I'm a big Dea fan, was hoping the Leafs would draft him.

A great hockey sense offensively, very gifted, a guy that can really score, a great shot very accurate, can also make play, very good vision and hands.

For an HF grade I'd give him a 7D like Crafton said.

Who would you say is his NHL comparable? What are his weaknesses? ETA? Thanks.

I'm not very good at doing NHL comparaison. I read an article in french somewhere that he compares himself to Patrick Sharp. I'd say the comparaison is pretty good, shooting/scoring forward that can play center or wing, can also make play and has a pretty decetn two-way game.

His weakness would be to get bigger and tronger. He's getting stronger each summer, gained some pretty good pounds this summer which is very good, but still need to get bigger and stronger for when he'll turn pro. He's combative and going into traffics, but getting bigger and stronger will help him in that area. I'd say hi two-way game is pretty good, but still would be a thing to work on, we all know that NHL coaches love centerman with great defensive game. But with his hockey sense, speed and when he'll get bigger/stronger his defensive game will be very fine.

UnrealMachine 09-18-2013 08:24 AM

Thanks a bunch. How about his skating?
