A Few Teams "Circling" Paul Postma

From his 30 Thoughts column

Quote:

A few teams are circling around Jets defenceman Paul Postma, wondering what is their plan for him. He's caught in a numbers game, especially with Jacob Trouba making a push at the big club. What they do know is there is no way Postma clears waivers. He's got too much talent and a good-value contract (two years, $712,500 average). If Winnipeg does decide to deal him, there will be interest.

For those that don't know, postma is an ahl all star who is currently a bottom pairing pp specialist. We have massive depth as far as offensive d and right handed d. His defensive game could improve, he was getting better last year. I don't think he has the tools to be a top pairing guy, but second pair isn't out of the question.

We are in no rush to trade him, Redmond or pardy will likely find themselves in st johns.

I'd give up a 3rd round pick for him if I'm looking for a solid, bottom pairing RH defenseman.

That's his floor as far as I see it, with 3 or 4th D Ceiling

Worst defensive defenseman in hockey.

HighLifeMan 09-24-2013 09:04 PM

Calgary has to be one of the teams interested.

Postma is a big, young, right handed offensive threat that has a familiarity with the city (born in red deer + two years played for the Hitmen) .

He would be a logical fit here as a sixth or seventh defensemen.

Potsma for Stralman?

Znith 09-24-2013 09:41 PM

CGY should trade for him and Franson, then go after a UFA goalie in the off season and a quick rebuild could be possible.

Deku 09-24-2013 09:42 PM

How good is he?

He's a very similar player to your Weirciotch although not as proven at the NHL level.

Would Stempniak for Postma and a 4th work?

Ladd-Little-Wheeler
Kane-Schiefele-Setoguchi
Frolik-Jokinen-Stempniak
Wright-Slater-Halischuk
Tangradi, Thorburn

Rangers would never do that.

That seems like a steep price. Stempniak was one of our most consistent contributors last year and will play a role in our top 6 I would imagine. I don't know if Calgary has the assests/willing to part with the assests to acquire a bottom pairing d man in the midst of a rebuild.

To me that's a deal more around deadline day when the Jets are battling and the Flames are sitting pretty looking at first overall.
If Stemp has a decent 15 or so goals maybe bump the pick to a 3rd?

Would they want Tootoo? Would allow us to bury Lashoff in the minors, don't think anyone should claim him and if they did, I wouldn't shed a tear. Postma > Lashoff.

Nobody wants Tootoo.

If Postma is moved it's going to be for a LHD, 3rd line forward or late 2nd-high 3rd round pick IMO

Who really knows?

He wasn't that good at the beginning of last year, he was getting beat to the outside way too much. That started improving. His shot and offensive instincts are definitely there. He ran the PP in St. Johns and did quite well.

He's fantastic at plays like this:

Don't be scared of his lack of points, our power play sucked last year (systems wise not talent wise) it was dead last. Kid has potential.

Winroba 09-25-2013 01:25 AM

he's a Gillis type for sure, would love to see him in Vancouver

Kevin8se7en 09-25-2013 02:41 AM

He's a younger Joe Corvo and the poor man's David Rundblad in terms of Offense/defense abilities.

Calgary is set up perfectly to do that kind of thing. They have huge cap room, too.

Honour Over Glory 09-25-2013 05:20 AM

Why the hell wouldn't you just waive Pardy and hope someone claims him or trade him for a very late pick and keep Postma?

Calgary should still go after Ilya Bryzgalov for a year and see if he can regain his old Coyotes/Ducks form and ride a Ramo/Bryz tandem.

That is probably what will happen
