There are some points I'd like to make

1) Owen Nolan, buy him out and the Leafs sit at just over 20 million with the ceiling set at 39 million that's plenty of wiggle room.

2) Some of those other teams don't have their superstars signed(Koivu, Theodore, Iginla, Smyth, Brewer, etc.) signed who are RFA's which will deffintly increase their salary.

3) UFA Market is flooded with tallent, players won't be signed for 6+ million anymore (unless they are say top 10 players in the league, Neidermayer?)

I'm not trying to be a biased homer but I think all teams are ready for this new era, no one is backed into a corner.

Don't you worry.

We survived Ballard, we can survive Bettman.

Just watch, we'll be fine, I have confidence JFJ can do the job, NOlan is gone for sure. And whoever else might be gone, bought out, the Leafs will do just fine, don't you worry. :teach:

I noticed that today from TSN's numbers on the Canadian teams.

Leafs best players are under contract.

Iginla is going to want 20%, Thornton is going to want 20%, ...

Leafs won't even have a 20% player.

Mark my words: The Leafs will win the cup by 2010! Younger free agents limited money around, levelled playing field, a maximum salary. All favour the Leafs. Besides, after 05-06, they only have 4-5 of their current players under contract. Also, despite what the Monkeys at the typewriters of certain prospect ranking websites would like you to believe the Leafs are just fine in the prospect dept.

Who even need prospects? UFA age will be 27 within years.

I'm saying that those already in the toronto system are just fine and that they aren't as bad as some like to make everyone believe

Why aren't people making a big deal about Ottawa like they do the Leafs?

Ottawa's at $23.6 with 10 players signed and they still haven't locked up Havlat and Hossa.

Even on Sportsnet it was all doom and gloom about the Leafs but mostly positive about Ottawa. They questioned Belfour and then John Garrett talked about what a great deal the Sens were getting on Hasek.

The Leafs aren't in trouble yet. The Eric Lindros signing isn't official :D

How much will Hatcher want?

think-blue- 07-13-2005 08:12 PM

Open Q: Do you feel that its a given that the Leafs will go to a 21 man roster (as suggested in the media, on these boards)...like Mess said, having the Marlies in TO might be helpful in that regard for call up purposes.

That Mess fellow sounds like a genius ..

Lots of talk on this on the Sports Channels today ..

For the Leafs its perfect .. 21 roster and give some youngsters a taste from time to time of the NHL ..

"But hey do you want to play in Boston?"

How do you like that statement from Pierre Lebrun?

Anyone hear that NHLPA is encouraging players to sign with Philadelphia and Toronto as a backlash to the Jacobs comments about them being as easy to replace as auto workers?

It's a no brainer. You have the farm team in the same city. Like Messenger said it can be used as a motivation tool for players that know if injury happens that whoever is going good will be looked upon for call-ups. It's not like the Leafs haven't been calling up players on the farm & plugging them in the line-up. Look at that year in the playoffs where they're 2 bottom defencemen(Ericsson,Dempsey) & their 4th line(Maclean,Ponikorovsky & Healy) were made up of guys on St Johns.

i agree, look at the senators. they are already at just over $23 million and hossa, havlat, white, and fisher arent signed yet and hossa will want the 20%.

& Spezza as well

I personally do not understand the buy out Eddie talk on the sports shows today ..

Yet a injury prone Hasek who is older now and injury prone and only played 14 games in 3 years is coming out of retirement and the Sens are in great position in goal ..

Hasek has a very active goaltending style as he flips and flops around .. While Eddie is a standup , partial butterfly goalie that I would think would be less effect by age. IMO

Hey maybe we should see if Pat Roy wants to come out of retirement and then our goaltending would be set in comparison to Hasek.

Hasek is only 3 months older than Belfour... not 2 years older.
IMO, Muckler is nuts if he accepts Hasek's option for this season. Cut him loose and go with an experienced goalie in his prime who played last season: Prusek. He's proven more already than quite a few guys who've been given starting jobs.

Havlat signed a cheapy deal before the lockout. Spezza doesn't have anything to negotiate with right now. White will sign cheap again.
Hossa is the only potential problem... oh, and he has no shot at the 20% of our payroll salary. At least not for a couple of years. I'm pretty sure that Ottawa will run according to the Daniel Alfredsson cap of $4.6M (for those of you who remember the Ray Bourque cap in Boston).

Hossa will a 2 year deal for whatever he can get, and according to some of his fans it should be at least what Alfie gets, and then he'll be gone as UFA in 2007.

I noticed a couple players the Sens should buy out, de Vries and Smolinski are both overpaid in today's NNHL.

from tsn:

Player 2005-2006 salary (US) 2005-2006 salary with 24% rollback (US)
Daniel Alfredsson $6.4 million $4.7 million
Zdeno Chara $4.9 million $3.7 million
Wade Redden $4.9 million $3.7 million
Dominik Hasek $3 million $2.3 million
Greg de Vries $3 million $2.3 million
Bryan Smolinski $3 million $2.3 million
Chris Phillips $2.6 million $2 million
Vaclav Varada $1.6 million $1.2 million
Peter Schaefer $1.3 million $988,000
Brian Pothier $700,000 $532,000
10 Players $23,600,000
