It's the Pens... Like We Expected Something Else?

Good -

- Enroth.
- Larsson was high-effort, high-enegy.

Bad -

- Still no offense.
- Rep calls for the Pens. That penalty shot was BS. The usual iffy calls -- the PK faceoff where Sid hits the crossbar but the Pens get the draw in the zone, the non-call on the Larsson tackle, no call on Bennett. Typical.
- The vets continue to confound with ho-hum efforts.

Ugly -

- Lots of watching.
- McBain. Dude, go far.

Only 79 games left!

Kublakhan 10-05-2013 08:45 PM

G... Vanek scores(he's on my fantasy team)

B.. Rest of the bums suck

U.. Coaching sucks

I think my biggest annoyance is that Rolson has done nothing to solve this team's number one problem: lack of identity. We all knew the roster wasn't great and they'd struggle, but you can still be working towards an identity even if you're not overly talented. What kind of team are they supposed to be? They're not offensive, they're not defensive, they're not tough, they're not aggressive, they're not hard working, they're not opportunistic, they're not based on special teams, they're not based on even strength. I have no idea what the hell this team is trying to do or trying to be.

Gabrielor 10-05-2013 08:46 PM

We have more L's than goals.

notHiro 10-05-2013 08:46 PM

Good:

-Enroth
-Larsson wasn't bad
-Vanek finally scored
-um... we didn't wear our third jerseys

Bad:

-Defense
-Offense
-Power Play
-Everything

Ugly:

-I'm pretty sure Stafford and Myers desecrated an Indian Burial Ground. Have these guys fallen off or what?
-I don't think we could have had a worse 3 games to start the season.
-These games are only confirming everyone's suspicions that Vanek and Miller want out of here.

So far, they are one thing: boring.

I'd like to see some passion from Kaleta, McCormick, Ott - they seem neutered

Prospector74 10-05-2013 08:48 PM

Good:
Girgs - really liking his style of play
Enroth

Bad:
0-3 start

Ugly:
Pens announcers non-stop ragging on Myers. Would think Myers had made disparaging comments about the dude's daughter the way they were going after him.:shakehead

The man was VISIBLY pissed off about the effort in a postgame presser after game #3. He's already taken away more ice time for poor effort than Ruff did in the last 5 years.

Yeah, he's doing NOTHING.

With all the injuries, dress the goons, dress the kids... and tell them to let the fur fly.

Oh, and that might get furry fan Stafford going too.

Yep.

Ott and Kaleta support that statement. Two instigators that have tried in years past to be spark plugs when the team needs a shot. That's not there this season.

Someone, ANYONE, needed to make a big hit, pick a fight, or just do a strip tease on the ice in an attempt to fire the team up tonight.

Instead? Well......we all witnessed that "effort".

So tell me, what kind of team are they trying to be? I didn't say he has done nothing, I said he's done nothing to give them an identity.

littletonhockeycoach 10-05-2013 08:57 PM

Not quite the blow out predicted - at least on the scoreboard. But in terms of play, control and puck possession, it was pretty one sided.

Pretty much all bad. Glad for Vanek finally getting the goal and Enroth deserved better.

Amazing that with 4 min left the team starts to loosen up and play with a bit of passion and abandon. And the game gets a little bit exciting as a result.

The team is NOT playing instinctively. They look like they are questioning and rethinking what to do out there real time and frankly, I think many are afraid to make a mistake. And hence, they squeeze the stick, hesitate on pursuit, over direct on passes, react before reading, etc., etc.. There's nothing smooth about their play and they look like a team that's still learning the basics about the system they are running.

Side note: Did Hoff know that Enroth had been pulled? Both he and Weber were backing up like it was a normal rush vs an empty net.

I think that empty netter fall right on Rolstons +/-

Unfortunately, I think we are looking at 3-4 years at the bottom. Long rebuild is in the cards.

They remind me of the recently bad Hawks teams -- bad when it matters, improve when it's no longer important. They did it down the stretch last year too.

G: Porter, Flynn, Girgensons, Larsson, goaltending
B: Line combos, penalty shot
U: The first line kind of sucks, and there is not team identity still.

Every possible line combo has a problem: Either the players' styles don't mesh, its a bad offensive line, its a bad defensive line, or its too weak of a line.

Vanek and Hodgson are lousy on defense, but they are the only ones that can score. I think I want those two broken up. I would love to see grigs with Vanek but he doesn't defend either. Its just a mess.

I don't know. And obviously they don't either.

But saying that the coach is 'doing nothing' to find it is BS and you know it. Coaches don't GIVE their team an identity. They help the team of players that he has find theirs.

EDIT : And yes, you did.

That's one that's on the coaching mates........players don't set the lines.
