Wild, Predators chase first victoryMonday, 10.07.2013 / 6:35 PM
Davis Harper - NHL.com Staff Writer

WILD (0-0-2) at PREDATORS (0-2-0)

TV: FS-N, FS-WI, FS-TN

Season series: This is the first of five meetings between these new Central Division opponents. The Wild took two of three from the Predators last season, though these teams always seem to play each other tight. Six of the last seven meetings have been decided by a single goal.

Big story: A couple of teams with high expectations are still working out the kinks two games into the 2013-14 season. The Wild took their first two contests to overtime, but couldn’t put the finishing touches on either of them. The Predators, with two regulation road losses in tow, return to Bridgestone Arena looking to nail down some points over a five-game homestand.

Team scope:

Wild: The Wild outshot their first two opponents, Los Angeles and Anaheim, by a 62-48 margin, but as of yet have been unable to put one in the win column. In a 4-3 overtime loss to the Ducks on Saturday, the Wild fought back from a 3-1 deficit with goals from line mates Jason Pominville and Zach Parise. After not factoring into the scoring in the opener against Los Angeles, Parise scored twice on six shots Saturday night. Still, the Minnesota native would have preferred the full points.

"We should have had more. We had some chances that we needed to get a couple more," Parise said. "We expect ourselves to do that and we have to do that."

The Wild lost Charlie Coyle midway through the second period of that game, after the second-year center collided with Andrew Cogliano. Minnesota announced Sunday that Coyle would miss 3-4 weeks with a knee sprain. Jason Zucker was called up from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League.

Predators: As Pekka Rinne goes, so go the Nashville Predators. The two-time Vezina Trophy finalist struggled in the opener against rival St. Louis, conceding three goals on six shots before being pulled. Nashville wound up losing 4-2. Rinne was much improved Friday against the Colorado Avalanche, saving 33 of 35 shots – including a few highlight-reel efforts – and the Predators fought to the end, the 3-1 score line the result an empty-netter from PA Parenteau.

"You play to win the game, so it's too bad we couldn't get the result," Rinne said. "A little bit of disappointment. Personally I felt good and I'm happy to be back out there and everything's feeling good. It's good to test your body and test your head.

"It's not fun losing games. It's not the effort. I think we battled hard, we had a lot of penalty kills and the penalty kill did a good job. It's the little things, like the first goal in the first period, a little letdown and, boom, it's in the net. Every single minute matters."

Who’s hot: Parise has two goals, including a power-play tally. … For Nashville, Mike Fisher has a goal and an assist.

Injury report: In addition to Coyle, Wild forward Michael Rupp is out indefinitely with a knee injury. … For Nashville, center Filip Forsberg (lower body) is questionable and defenseman Roman Josi is doubtful with a concussion. Left wing Viktor Stalberg (shoulder) is expected back later this month.

kypredsfan 10-08-2013 07:31 AM

I'll be there! Ready to rock the Bridge once again.

Grandmaster 10-08-2013 08:13 AM

This will be the first Preds game I'll be able to catch this year. Hoping we get our first win of the season.

Cashville 10-08-2013 08:43 AM

A win is going to depend heavily on Jones' 1st pairing performance; it's not fair, but it is what it is. Best of luck to him and Ellis; really hope the human rocketship comes out like he wants it. A series of poor performances from him will have him going down the Blum path I believe.

Why are they breaking up Fisher and Nystrom? Those 2 seemed to work the best together in the first 2 games.

I am not sure either, I thought that line looked and worked pretty good together.
It may be wrong, but it is the lines that were reported from practice yesterday.

Yes they are, they are also the same lines that smashville247.net are reporting.

Paranoid Android 10-08-2013 09:23 AM

It's probably an attempt to jump start Wilson and Hornqvist. Fisher been great these past two games and Nystrom is very limited in his abilities. If we want anything that resembles a successful season, we need Willy and Horny to perform. Our season pretty much rides on them.

triggrman 10-08-2013 09:28 AM

Legwand played really well with Hartnell and Hall.

This current line seems like a better version of that.

worstfaceoffmanever 10-08-2013 10:07 AM

Fisher has been the best center of the three of him, Cullen, and Legwand over the first two games, so putting him with our two biggest scoring threats (in theory) makes sense.

I still think we lose 3-1, maybe 3-2.

Nashville Transplant 10-08-2013 10:46 AM

They should give out free coffee BEFORE the game.

The over under on goals in total is 3...

Gaustad from Clune and Jones.

other than that, a snoozefest...

(and yes, I still have a ticket if someone is looking for a good seat at a reasonable price... coffee not included.)

2-0 Preds

preds1 10-08-2013 11:14 AM

3-1 Minny.

Will be there tho, should be a fun game otherwise.

Drake744 10-08-2013 11:17 AM

2-1 Preds. Although I think we're pretty historically disappointing against Minnesota. And that's when we didn't suck.

PS, maybe it's a joke but calling them the "Wilds" in the title makes us look clueless.

Preds33 10-08-2013 11:34 AM

It looks like Spaling isn't a heathly scratch. He's going to be injury scratch instead.

time to put Josi on IR and call some people up.

I'm blaming it on the keyboard.

Fixed

PFL615 10-08-2013 12:06 PM

Doubt we will know Spaling is even out.

thecloser 10-08-2013 12:09 PM

can't release my source; could be wrong but I hear Forsberg is not playing tonight.

Outeffingstanding

AtlantaWhaler 10-08-2013 12:15 PM

Great. I assume we need a call-up if that's the case.

kypredsfan 10-08-2013 12:21 PM

If FF is out, we would've called someone up by now right?

3-2 Preds in SO
