Season series: First of two meetings between the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames. In their most recent matchup, on Jan. 11, 2012 at Scotiabank Saddledome, a four-goal first period powered the Flames to a 6-3 victory.

Big story: While the Devils try to avoid setting a team record by losing five in a row to begin the season, the Flames will attempt to make it five straight without a regulation loss. It's an encouraging start for a franchise that comes off a 13th-place finish in the Western Conference and wasn't projected to do a whole lot better this season.

Team Scope:

Devils: In their past three games, New Jersey has held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 over the New York Islanders, 3-0 over the Edmonton Oilers and 2-0 over the Vancouver Canucks, and they've all gotten away. The Devils got single points each time, losing twice in the shootout and most recently 3-2 in overtime to the Canucks on Tuesday, but a win would go a long way toward helping the team's morale.

"It's tough to judge anything after four games," forward Jaromir Jagr said in Tom Gulitti's Fire & Ice blog. "I would say in some areas we are very good. In some areas, we are bad. So, we have to keep doing the things we're doing well and get better at the things we don't do well or somehow try to do all the things good for 60 minutes. We have not been able to do it.

"(Monday) we did it good for 50 minutes and it costs us a point and then (Tuesday) the same thing."

Flames: One of the main reasons the prognostications for Calgary were so dire was because the team lost its rock in goal, Miikka Kiprusoff, to offseason retirement. In his stead, the Flames have veteran journeyman Joey MacDonald as well as Karri Ramo, who spent the past few years in the Kontinental Hockey League.

MacDonald has started three of the Flames' first four games and turned in his best performance of the season Wednesday with 33 saves in a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Rookie Sean Monahan supported him with a goal and an assist.

"It's a learning experience, seeing games out," MacDonald told the Calgary Herald. "To win games like this against great teams like that, to win those close ones when you've got to hang and gut it out, to find a way, means a lot. That's how you develop. How you get better."

Who's hot: Jagr and Patrik Elias have goals in consecutive games for the Devils. … Monahan, the sixth pick in the 2013 NHL Draft has goals in three straight for the Flames and points in all four games (3-2-5) to begin his career. Jiri Hudler (2-3-5) also has a four-game point streak.

Injury report: Calgary forward David Jones (upper body) left Wednesday's game and did not return. He is day-to-day. Forwards Mike Cammalleri (hand) and Matt Stajan (leg) are out.

All in on the Flames on this one, but we aren't even underdogs according to Vegas.

TheHudlinator 10-11-2013 11:57 AM

Let's not jinx this maybe call them an older team instead of bad?

Nice GDT I'm glad the professor has caught on as a thing.

InfinityIggy 10-11-2013 12:01 PM

Fan of both teams, but cheering for my Flames first and foremost. Don't underestimate the Devils though they have some good offensive weapons.

Great profit on the Montreal Game. So everything once again on the Flames to win. 4-2

I'm glad to see my GDT template is being used and being modified and has taken on a life of its own. :]

I have a feeling New Jersey might respond tonight with a good game but still have to hope for a Flames win.

All in to win!

Will be at this one. Box seats baby!!!

Smash these ****in' guidos!

The Ultimate Warrior 10-11-2013 12:10 PM

Glad Brodeur is starting. We've had some success against him in our building. (last few games)

I'm predicting a tight/low scoring game.

3-2 Flames

And VERY much appreciated. Nothing depresses me more than going into the GDT and seeing just the line-up and a Go Flames Go! And those threads would finish with like 3 pages. Our GDT's are actually busy this year! :yo:

YES!! Can't wait to give him a standing ovation. This should be the last time he's ever playing in Calgary. A legend and IMO greatest goaltender to ever put on the pads.

I'm gonna say the Flames win this one 5-4.

Blow a 4-0 lead and win in the shootout.

I'm just guessing on the starter. Schneider started against Vancouver, and I don't think he gets back-to-back starts given they declared Brodeur as their number 1.

Pretty sure I saw Brodeur named as the starter on Twitter.

I wanted to put something there to generate discussion/anxiety.

I do realize this probably means that we'll get our first loss of the season.

First time I ever got to see the Devils play in person was in Calgary.

Kipper and Broduer had an epic goalie battle and kept the score 0-0 until overtime when the Devils put one in. It was a once in a lifetime treat to watch my two favorite goalies ever battle it out like that.

Sad to think this time next year BOTH will likely be retired, and if you had told me then that Broduer would still be in the league when Kipper retired I would've called you a liar.

Really went off the chart with that one. :sarcasm: ;)

Hasek might of had the higher peak but Brodeur has had the better career in my opinion.

I was at that game too!! I'll never forget it. What a goaltending clinic!

I swear Hasek sold his soul to the devil for a few good years. IMO it's:

1. Brodeur
2. Roy
3. Hasek

My opinion of course.
