Should the Wild consider going after Vanek?

With how are young guys are doing, should we even consider going after this guy in free agency?

MuckOG 10-13-2013 03:56 PM

Of course the Wild should, and they will.

Parise - Koivu - Nino
Coyle - Granlund - Vanek
Cooke - Brodziak - Pominville
Mitchell - Haula - Fontaine

Great blend of vets and youth. A proper mix of playmakers and finishers as well as two way players up and down the line-up This team can be elite for the next 3-5 years with this line-up.

Consider it? Yes, via free agency, but be very careful about it. No, via trade.

This is the correct answer.

se7en 10-13-2013 04:00 PM

I won't be upset if we get him or anything but I'd rather have Matt Moulson or Dion Phanuef.

keppel146 10-13-2013 04:02 PM

can we afford him and our young guys? coyle, granny, nino, dumba, brodin will all have to get paid. that side of things is also there.

This. But once we see how the year plays out and the younger kids progress.

I think so....With the loss of Heatley's salary plus the cap rising, we should be ok to sign all the players you listed to either bridge contracts or long term extensions.

I just think the addition of Vanek's scoring ability could make this team deadly and deep. Plus, I'm starting to question Zucker a bit and not sure he's going to pan out like we all are hoping.

Victorious Secret 10-13-2013 04:06 PM

I ran the numbers last year and he his easily affordable. It's just for how long. 5 years would be the max I give him.

Avder 10-13-2013 04:10 PM

The only way we get him before free agency should be for a middling prospect and a middling draft pick that is conditional on Vanek signing an extension.

I agree with these two posts, although not with Moulson. We have a very good group of forward prospects and young players and don't really need him. Plus, he really hasn't done anything good this year and that's a bit worrisome.

Phaneuf though. Yes, please. Girardi would be my other #1 target. I'd bid for both and see who I get. That's just me though.

Don't really need Vanek and getting a top-4 defender would be better.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Engebretson 10-13-2013 04:56 PM

I certainly wouldn't mind getting Vanek, but I think we have higher priority needs at other positions.

Also, I agree with everyone else that we should't even entertain trading for him in any realistic scenario.

TZM 10-13-2013 04:56 PM

I'm afraid of another Heatley situation. A short term deal (3-5 years) would be fine.

On the positive side... If we had not traded for Heater, we'd still have this year + another full season of Havlat at $5mil.

BuddyMcCormick 10-13-2013 05:00 PM

Does a bear **** in the woods?

Dakota Sioux 10-13-2013 05:37 PM

By all means go for it.

grN1g 10-13-2013 05:42 PM

id guess he would want the same deal length as pommers? 6.5x5 would be about as fair as you can get given both sides situations and wants.

thestonedkoala 10-13-2013 05:42 PM

No. We need to fix our defense still.

I like Vanek but we have too many wingers as it is.

Agreed.

Although I will be curious what happens this offseason with Rupp, Heater, Konopka and company all UFA's.

Dee Oh Cee 10-13-2013 05:47 PM

None of them will be retained...at least I don't see any scenario where they would be.

More like 7.5M-8M long-term.

But who fills the void? Or do we chance it and try to roll 3 scoring lines and 1 shutdown line?

Vanek knows he will not get 8M a year, let alone 7.5. I can see 7 at the absolute most.

What void does losing Heatley, Rupp, and Konopka create? Especially in a scenario where you're signing Vanek
