Superfeet for outside edges help?
 
Ok... that title sucked but here is the deal. I have been skating for about a year, and I am ok at it... but my outside edges are basically non-existent. I am a big guy, with old, cranky, surgery scarred knees so I am a bit untrusting in them sometimes and really have to focus on my kneebend and such. I think a side effect of that is really trusting those outside edges to hold correctly.

Anyway, I have been working with a coach and she notices that I constantly fight my edges. Even when I try to lean over on them, my body constantly tries to fight back and it puts me on the center of the blade and not the edge. I am a bit knock kneed(opposite of bow legged) and she has suggested that I might try superfeet inserts to alter how my skates fit on the foot to encourage a more center/outside feel in the foot. That is may help move that balance point.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It made a huge difference for me in edge control. Almost night and day difference. I attribute my improved transitions, pivots and backwards crossovers to a good combo of practice and SF Yellow.

That's the thing about it though, the degree of benefits are always going to vary between people. You might not notice a lick of difference.

Nobody can give you a good answer on how it could help YOU. Try them and see; if they don't make a difference, take advantage of the 60 day guarantee.

Very interesting. Did you feel like you were wobbly and unstable at first or was it a smooth transition? I am certainly willing to try, but wanted to make sure this was not just a coach desperate to find something that might help me. Sounds like there is validity to this though.

Also, did you need to rebake your skates after you put the inserts in?

When I first put them in, it was weird, like I was too far forward in lean because my foot didn't collapse as before in the skate. It took a couple skates to get used to, but it wasn't difficult.

If you have a decent pair of mid or higher end skates, then I would recommend rebaking them (be sure that they are not in the oven with the skates though) with SF inside. If yours have been decently used or are a lower end model, then I would just leave it.

I learned through a PT visit that my glut stability was really weak and since working on that, my weak side outer edge has really improved.

I always thought it might be a weak ankle cause I have strong legs. But it's not quads, it's gluts and abductors, they need to be strong enough to support/stabilize your leg to ride the outer edge.

Cool thanks for that. I'm trying to take my skating to the next level and realize that this is part of my problem as well.

Part of the problem is probably psychological — your feet are instinctively fighting the movement because at a deep level your mind believes you will get hurt. It's a self preservation thing, which happens when driving, skiing... Anything that could potentially lead to a fall.

Anything that gets you leaning over on that outside edge will be useful. Try feeling the outside edge by leaning on it while stationary (maybe leaning into the boards).

Do turns with both feet on the ice by leaning to one side and guiding your body around the turn with your shoulder. That way you front leg in the turn is on an outside edge but you're supported by the back leg which is an inside edge.

Well, I tried out the superfeet last night... and there is certainly a big difference to me. I could feel the shift in balance point to my outside a bit more. It will take a break in period to get used to that feeling, but I have to believe this will be of some benefit to me down the road.
