Corey Potter and Denis Grebeshkov [UPD: Both Clear; Assigned to OKC]

Per Oilers twitter.

I can't even imagine how bad Potter would have been in the disaster that is this defense.

Hockey Nightmare 10-30-2013 11:06 AM

Bold.

Beerfish 10-30-2013 11:06 AM

Too bad LOLbarbera is not on the list. At least the oilers are taking strong action to show players who is boss by waving two guys that have hardly played at all.

Picking up Grebs was an utter fail from the moment MacT mused about how good he was for us 8 years ago for that one half season. How much are we paying him?

DarkSaturn 10-30-2013 11:07 AM

Italic.

Jean Ralphio 10-30-2013 11:08 AM

Does this mean they're going to run with 3 goalies?

That's reserved for the day we waive Acrobello.

yukoner88 10-30-2013 11:08 AM

atleast its an early admission that the Grebs experiment failed.

They'll wait till Dubnyk's ankle is good to go before making a goalie move.

Come on Tom Renney! You know you want your boy Potter.

Hopefully he convinces the Wings to pick him up.

Playa Hejda 10-30-2013 11:12 AM

I don't mind the Grebs experiment. MacT took a swing and missed. It happens and it didn't cost the Oilers a whole lot. At least this is an admission of a mistake and shows something is being done to correct it.

Too bad about Potter though, I always liked him for no real reason.

Soli 10-30-2013 11:13 AM

I don't understand how this happens today instead of yesterday, knowing that Perron is sick and sending Lander out the door.

misfit 10-30-2013 11:15 AM

In his few games this year, Grebeshkov hasn't shown any flashes of the quality player he could be at times in his previous go-around as an Oiler. Not sad to see him sent down, but I'm a little surprised they did it. Potter I don't really get. Why recall him in the first place when they already had 7 defensemen on the big club? Either way, OKC is where he should be, so I'm all for the move.

Jimmi Jenkins 10-30-2013 11:15 AM

Fingers crossed on the release of Grebeshkov back to the KHL and recalling Fedun.

KlimasLoveChild 10-30-2013 11:18 AM

lets hope this is a precursor to a large trade

That's my take as well. Unlike the Barker experiment, at least MacT had backups in the event that it didn't work out. The Barker signing was a much more poorly thought-out move not only because he paid him so much, but because it was pretty much Tambellini's only move to address the defense so it either worked, or they were screwed.

Just add it to the list of minor annoying mistakes that have been made by management and accept them for what they are. Inevitable.

Hockey Nightmare 10-30-2013 11:19 AM

I don't know why MacT signed Grebs in the first place. He wasn't even that great in the KHL. Out of all of his moves, it's the one I doubted the most.

Soli 10-30-2013 11:20 AM

I think one of these roster spots is for Smyth. The other... well I'd be shocked if they didn't carry 7 defensemen.

dss97 10-30-2013 11:24 AM

I would have at least given Potter a few games.. He wasn't nearly as bad last year as HF likes to think.

Lindo 10-30-2013 11:33 AM

Hopefully Larsen or Fedun gets a shot. Larsen looked pretty good in the pre-season and has unreal skating ability.

The Last Dynasty 10-30-2013 11:33 AM

Grebs is one Russian I actually wanna see go back to Russia

For a #6 or #7 Potter had a very nice range of skills.

Size
Grit
Decent Positioning
Decent Speed
Decent Puck mover
Decent PK
Decent PP

He really is a nice all around D-man. Very much an NHL level depth defenseman. Far better than Greb, Whit, Peckam, and on some nights even better than N. Shultz.

I think Whitney being his partner sunk him here in Edmonton.

He was horrible in his own zone and for some reason Kruger had him out there protecting leads in the final minute and he was always just drowning.
