Rivlary Night or Penguin Night

They need to rename Rivalry Night to Penguin Night

Is this not the 3rd time the Penguins are on it already and we aren't even to thanksgiving.

And it looks like another 8 oclock start tonight.

Please rotate the Pens out of this, thank you.

Remaining "Rivalry Night" Games:

Dec 18 @ NY Rangers
Jan 15 vs Washington
Feb 5 @ Buffalo
Apr 9 vs Detroit

Shrimper 11-20-2013 07:53 AM

That well known rivalry against Buffalo.

Captain Hook 11-20-2013 08:41 AM

Yeah, I think Rivalry night is lame. I hate the 8 o'clock starts too.

Le Magnifique 66 11-20-2013 08:44 AM

I couldn't care less about the "rivalry part" besides when we play the Flyers

As for the 8pm start I like it, put the kids to bed around 8 and then can enjoy the game

Cardboard Orpik 11-20-2013 08:50 AM

Whatever. It's a marketing gimmick, I can't get too worked up over the NHL trying to sell their product. What's more important is that this game actually matters and will be interesting. The winner takes the lead in the Metro division, Sid and Ovi are in a points race, the Pens are trying to pull out of a slump, the Caps are surging, etc.. This might be the game of the week and it's highlighted on national television.

Shady Machine 11-20-2013 08:57 AM

It's the 4th rivalry night in a row for the Pens. I personally like them just for the rivalry show they have. The Boston one was a giant stretch, but the NYR and Philly show was pretty cool to see. I'm looking forward to watching the Washington one. I want to see the Nedved goal.

smetana 11-20-2013 08:59 AM

No Steigy. This is a good thing, as far as I'm concerned. I just tune out while Jonesey and Milbury spread their anti-Pens agenda during intermissions.

No Steigy is the only good part of Rivalry night, imo. I am one of the posters that likes and misses Errey when the game is on nationally though.

I haven't watched the rivalry shows yet. Shady Machine seemed to give it a good review so maybe I'll check it out.

PensBandwagonerNo272 11-20-2013 09:34 AM

monday night's game was broadcast nationally too

The Tang 11-20-2013 09:41 AM

I don't like the 8:00 start on weekdays. But not having to listen to Steigy and Errey is always a plus. I just don't bother with the intermission.

I mean I wouldn't say the shows are anything special, it's just cool to re-live some of the moments from my childhood. For the Flyers one they talked about the 5 OT game and showed highlights and had some interviews. I remember listening to that game on my radio in my bed because my dad made me go to sleep. Just cool stuff like that.

The Rangers one they interviewed Leetch and Graves over Lemieux getting hacked. I was disappointed Lemieux didn't get an interview there, but he probably declined if they even asked. Some of the show is a stretch like there is some epic rivalry between Crosby and Lundqvist over Sid diving 6 years ago. Oh and they way overplayed the Torts arrogant rant. Overall, it was pretty cool stuff.

I'm going to the game tonight and I hate the 8pm start.

Shady Machine 11-20-2013 10:54 AM

I love the 8pm start. It gives me time to get home from work, run, and eat dinner.

The Buffalo one will be interesting to watch to see how they string that one out.

I hate the 8pm start as well.

It is the 3rd in a row and we'll be on NBC again on the 9th, prior to our fourth "rivalry night" (against the Rags). And people wonder why other fans claim that Crosby and the Pens get media favoritism. It's pretty obscene in this case, really. It's obvious the schedule was set up this way on purpose.

I suppose if the NHL's ratings / marketing numbers show the Pens get the biggest mid-week draw then it's understandable on one level, but... it's still pretty annoying if your team doesn't get much NBC love (be it LA or whoever). What bugs me about this is, this is what feeds into all the conspiracy crap. If the league was more balanced in who got the national games, outdoor games, etc... it would cut down on a lot of the idiocy we see in these forums.

Yup that should be the NHL's job, to cut out the conspiracy theories on HFBoards.

They may be a little short sighted in their approach though. I mean, if you want your non traditional teams to be successful, you might need to throw them a bone every once in a while.

Darth Vitale 11-20-2013 12:13 PM

Not saying it's their job, I'm saying that would be the cause and effect. As I mentioned, they presumably do it because of ratings...

Yeah I guess I did a little bit of selective reading. My apologies, Darth Vitale.

Agreed, don't get home till after 11 PM and wake up at 6 AM, so it makes for an extra cup of coffee in the morning. I take the T into the city for work, so it barely makes sense for me to go home then turn right around for 7 or 730 games, so I suppose that would be the lone benefit. 1st world problems I know...
