2013-14 WJC Discussion

Figured we could start a thread for WJC-related conversation in this lost Sabres season.

Early scuttlebutt is that Max Domi is going to be left off the Team Canada WJC selection camp roster, which will be announced at 1pm today.

No @phoenixcoyotes Max Domi for #WJC tourn? 12th overall pick in #NHL draft. #rukiddinme? Hope Team Canada know what they r doing.

Perhaps Baptiste, who many thought was on the bubble, kept Domi off the selection camp roster. If so, I expect many of the Domi fans to attack Baptiste's selection.

Crazy that Domi wouldn't get a tryout. Wasn't there speculation that we were trying to move up from 16 to get him?

I am doubting Baptiste makes it, but possible. In any case Domi does not need to look at who got put in front of him, but to look in the mirror. His game looks worse this year than last year. He is not even in the top 50 in scoring in the OHL, although with missed games (mostly due to his own bad play). He is on pace for 12 less goals and points than he had last year.

I do like his game and think on the big ice his skill will show, but there is a lot of competition for spots, and he has not shown what it takes.

Baptiste is an outside shot at best. Hopefully they look at his play in the U18 and Russia game, but there are a few more safer political picks to make, so I rank his chances as low.

Nurse not invited either.

BTW, will Risto be able to go back and play for Finland?

Zip15 12-02-2013 11:43 AM

Here's the Canada selection camp roster. Per above, no Nurse and no Domi.

As a Canadian...no Dom is like "wow, what are they thinking?" - but we do have a lot of centres.

His performance this season simply has not warranted an invite.
He's been carried by a 16 year old rookie.

Paxon 12-02-2013 01:30 PM

Domi has definitely not been good in the London games I've been able to see this year and was arguably terrible in the earlier ones I caught. Full dangle mode. Shinkaruk also has been pretty underwhelming. Don't be surprised if he doesn't make the final roster.

No Baptiste, no surprise, but it'd have been nice if he made it to camp.

I haven't actually seen it, but read a summary of it and there was a video on the Blue Jackets site (similar behind-the-scenes stuff like beyond blue & gold) and they had an agreement to move back with Buffalo if their guy was still there, and IIRC the Sabres were going to give up one of their 2nds to move up a few spots. Then Domi went to Phoenix, and the deal was off, suggesting Domi was their target.

What is "Play crappy, me-first hockey and it doesn't lead to a guy getting selected?" for 200 Alex.

Revelate 12-02-2013 03:08 PM

Excited to Draisaitl play against the US and Canada.

Chainshot 12-02-2013 03:10 PM

Is Minny allowing Dumba to participate?

Yes, per McKenzie

"As usual, tho, list has already leaked out. Notable news: MIN has loaned defenceman Mat Dumba to Team Canada. He's the only NHLer on list."

Chainshot 12-02-2013 03:18 PM

Buffalo could be screwing with three WJC teams with Ristolainen, Grigorenko and Girgensons.

Buffalo doesn't really have a saw with them as they are not with the Sabres

Bosswally 12-02-2013 05:20 PM

Zardorov will be there, Im surprised they are not letting Grigorenko go though

Djp 12-02-2013 07:00 PM

The feeling was they were going to allow Grigorenko to play in the WJC and then post trade deadline in the CHL they would then send him down, thus allowing them to have 3 europeans.

Girgensons will not play in the WJC, he will be playing in the Olympics.

The one issue with Buffalo is the Spengler Cup where they feel they need a good showing and have Risto be part of it and likely send Girgs down to play with Rochester in this. Then after, call him back up.

@SabresProspects

Hardly a shocker, but London d-man Nikita Zadorov will be participating in Russia's U20 World Junior selection camp. #Sabres

Also Latvia is not qualified for the top division of the WJC.

Participating? He should run the selection camp. He'd only select players who "like hit and score goal".
