Decisions need to be made, but which ones?

The Flyers, as currently built, are a team that will likely hover around the .500 and maybe sneak into the playoffs with some good luck. The change in coaches, from Peter Laviolette to Craig Berube, has yielded some benefits, but there’s also areas on the roster that need work.

As it stands, the Flyers defense corps is too slow, too inconsistent and far too easy to forecheck into oblivion. The Flyers are struggling to score, but the big issue is the transition game. The forwards have to back check and then carry the puck through the neutral zone, which saps energy and causes the team to have issues sustaining offensive zone time. The defense’s inability to consistently hit guys in motion leads to a slow moving attack that is easy to contain.

This has been the issue for years now, since the Pronger injury, and it's only gotten worse with the aging and slowing of Kimmo Timonen.

Berube has done a better job working with what he has on the roster. You'd rather see the D making good first passes or rushing the puck occasionally, but the personnel isn't there for that and they've had to adjust.

Streit for one is looking like a horrible signing. Maybe even trade Lecav.

No. Montreal gets the way better center and possibly the better defenseman. Beaulieu, though closer to being an NHL regular, is just as much as an unknown as Morin.

RoDu 12-09-2013 09:22 PM

There is only one decision to be made right now, and it's to stand pat till the off season, maybe be sellers at the deadline. And **** off you ain't getting Couturier

No. Couturier is untouchable. End of discussion.

For sure! Trade our current best player and #1 prospect because we are struggling. Why trade what is going right?

LegionOfDoom91 12-09-2013 09:53 PM

I'm all for waiting out to the deadline & seeing where we're at, if out of it sell off the expiring contracts (have to figure out where Downie stands with the team going forward as well).

Evaluate the team in the offseason then move so accordingly.

Would love to find a home for Hartnell then re-sign Downie.

FlyersFan61290 12-09-2013 10:17 PM

Actually with some good luck the Flyers would be an above 500 team. The bad luck so far this year is unbelievable. Look no further then the Flyers shooting percentages almost team wide.

Horrible deal for the flyers

Couturier > Eller

Beaulieu is closer to the NHL at this point but morin could end up being a better player, we just don't know right now. I'm not willing to give up on morin for a guy who is simply closer to the nhl, while downgrading at the C position by dealing the one guy who's been a huge bright spot over the past few weeks

But this is where they argue that Eller is > Couturier even though Eller is almost 4 years older and only has two more points than Couts in one more game. They also forget that Couts plays the significantly tougher minutes and is that much younger, when he fills out he's gonna be a beast.

FLYERSFAN18 12-09-2013 11:08 PM

Giroux and Couturier are the present and future on offense. Laughton will be the third line center in the next two years which should provide us with one of, if not the best depth at center in the league. Other than that I have no clue what will happen to this team. Hartnell, Streit, and likely Lecavalier should probably be upgraded.

One of B. Schenn and VL need to be put on Giroux's wing full time for more than 1 or 2 games at a time. If Schenn(would be the best outcome) or Lecavalier could become a goal scoring threat with Giroux it would be very beneficial.

Schenn-Giroux-Simmonds
Hartnell-VL-Voracek

or

Hartnell-Giroux-VL
Simmonds-Schenn-Voracek

As for defense I dont think we make any major moves during the season. Hopefully there will be some players available in free agency this summer. Would Girardi make a good replacement for Timonen?Could we potentially upgrade Streit to a guy like Brian Campbell?

B. Schenn and Simmer have been killing this team. They have been really bad most of the season. Any advanced stat will tell you this.

The Flyers the first 1/3 of the season top 6 has put them in a bad position. If they were an average scoring team they would be among the top teams in the league.

The defense statistically has been very good, Gus needs to be in for Mez who is by far the worst d-man on the Flyers.

GoneFullHolmgren 12-10-2013 12:01 AM

good luck, bad luck. whatever. at this point you are what you are. an average at best hockey club that is flawed both up front and on the backend. the only constant has been the goaltending.

Psuhockey 12-10-2013 05:18 AM

The Flyers have no identity. Their forwards as a group aren't big nor fast or hard working. Their defense are the same way, not big, not mobile, not puck moving. Holmgren, who I think is a decent judge of talent has no idea on how to build a team especially with chemistry.

The flyers need to decide what they want to be. With the talent on the team and in the system, their best bet for success is to build a hard working, strong on the boards, two way group of forwards much like the bruins. They have Couturier, Read, and Downie who already fit that description plus Laughton and Leier who are cut from the same two way mold. If the flyers have two strong two way lines they will be able to hide Giroux and Hartnell, who is untradeable, better with strictly easy matchups and offensive starts. Sadly Giroux is looking more and more like Briere everyday and needs those easy matchups. A top line of Hartnell Gioux and Lecavalier could be effective and hidden.

If the forwards are going to be more of the hardworking two way variety, the defense should be made more mobile and puck moving. With forward assistance in the d-zone, there won't be as much of a need for defensive dmen specialists. The flyers have a nice stable of mobile defensemen prospects in Alt, Hagg, and Gostibehere who can at bare minimum move the puck effectively up to the forwards. Even Morin is mobile and developing his offensive game. The problem is the crap currently on the blueline. This is what needs to be changed immediately.

The flyers need to decide if they want to compete immediately(next year as this year is sunk with the current cap situation) or are willing to wait. If immediate, I would look to Winnipeg, who themselves are stagnating, to make a big trade. They have three nice PMD in Bogosian, Enstrom, and Buff. Trouba should make at least one available. If Winnipeg isn't willing to go big (probably not since most GM's have no balls), I would trade for young NHL or NHL ready defensemen who haven't established themselves yet like Gormley, Beaulieu, Pysk, or Kleftbom. Also a guy like Justin Schultz who is struggling this year in the cluster f that is Edmonton but still has a ton of talent. Trade bait would be the Schenns, Voracek, and or Simmonds.

There is this thing called contract.
Our GM likes to make them long and pricy, so no.
We are stuck with Streit.

I knew the moment we signed him it would hurt us in the future.
I just didn't expect it to be this season. Awful signing.

dingbathero 12-10-2013 07:35 AM

Go after Justin Williams. Or a huge puck possession player.

Think we could get mark pysk from the sabres cheaply?

Depends on your definition of cheap. Ristolainen (probably will be ready next year) and Myers are their top 2 right handed defensemen so he could be available. It might cost B Schenn with the Sabres adding something else.

BillDineen 12-10-2013 07:44 AM

5 year contract for Dan Boyle in the off-season? If Pronger can do it until age 42 ... oh wait, oops.:sarcasm:

I would think cheaper than that - they have a decent back end and what they have in the minors too... hoping for too much I guess.
