Sabres' defenders (and Ekblad)

So, being a Sabres fan, the season ended about a month ago and draft talk began mid August. Recently its heated up as the realization has set in that it will be a struggle to hit 20 wins this season. This all means we have an almost guaranteed top 2 pick. Yay us...

If current draft rankings hold true and Reinhart ends up the #1 pick at the draft, we end up staring at Aaron Ekblad.

Just the second player to be granted exceptional status in the OHL. Ekblad is a true "two-way" defenseman. He makes great passes, uses his size to his advantage, plays the body, quarterbacks the power play, can take over the game in any of the three zones and has great hockey sense. -Eliteprospects.com

The catch is that we currently have 5 potential top 4 D-men already on the roster. Drafting Ekblad would give us a 6th, forcing our hand into a trade. What we need are top 3 forwards younger than 25.

Inside Sabre nation we are torn, 1 faction believes you take Ekblad, he gets the inside track to being the #1 and you move Myers/Pysyk/Risto/Zadorov to bring in a top 6 forward. The second faction believes we need a top 3 forward regardless of who is available. The third faction believes Ekblad can be dealt for a top 3 forward under 25 who has more value then the crop of forwards available at picks 3-7, or at least collect a top 6 forward while moving down into the 3-7 range.

So what value is actually out there? Make a deal for Ekblad, Risto, Myers, Pysyk, Zadorov and send us back an equivalent forward under 25. Or would you take Draisaitl/Bennet/Nylander/Dal Colle at 2 and let Ekblad slide. Please notice Ehrhoff is not on this list, there are contract complications that make him virtually untradeable.

Myers for Okposo.

Canadian Canuck 12-10-2013 06:03 PM

Myers for Canucks don't need Dman.

TT1 12-10-2013 06:03 PM

no way in hell. Did you even read the op? why would we move armia when he's virtually our only top winger prospect
And Eller is not worth 2 recent first round picks

WTF? I don't think Eller is worth any of those 3 straight up, never mind adding Armia.

Hotlanta 12-10-2013 06:41 PM

As a fan of neither team. Something around Yakupov and Myers with Buffalo adding?

BStinson 12-10-2013 06:46 PM

I think Myers would be a possible candidate possibly for the Wings as we are lacking a top 4 RHD but I wonder what it would take in return.

Every offer in here is awful. The only one that's relatively close is Yakupov for Myers and I'd be hesitant to make that trade at this point, I definitely wouldn't add to it from our end.

laundryman 12-10-2013 06:54 PM

I'd be interested in Brayden Schenn or Simmonds for Myers as the basis for a trade. Not sure if Buffalo would be though.

Simmonds for Myers
Maybe +

rockinghockey 12-10-2013 07:01 PM

I am not trading Yak for Myers EDM needs a physical dman that can move the puck Myers is not physical

Dixon 12-10-2013 07:01 PM

People outside of Buffalo don't realize that Myers has taken a big step forward this year. He still has leaks in his game, but he is starting to look like he may become a dominant defenseman in the next few years. Ted Nolan was a great choice to come in and help Myers and the other young players develop. Tyler Ennis looks like a brand new player thanks to Nolan. I would suspect GM's will be gauging Myers value extremely high very soon if not already.

Some combination of Nyquist/mantha/picks. Not necessarily all 3

He's a lot more physical than most people think.

Halpysback* 12-10-2013 07:07 PM

A budget team with a need for a PMD would probably get most value out of Myers since his contract was so front-loaded.

Dallas has a ton of F prospects and needs defense. Faksa/Ritchie + 1st?

This. The low-ball offers for him need to stop. If there was ever a chance you could've gotten him cheaply, it's gone now.

DickSmehlik 12-10-2013 07:07 PM

I don't think it's a struggle at all. You have a team that is on pace to finish as the lowest scoring team in the modern era. You need offense.

You take a position of strength (D prospects) and use it to address your weaknesses (scoring).

Grasshopperking 12-10-2013 07:20 PM

Philly and Buffalo seem like awesome trading partners

StringerBell 12-10-2013 07:35 PM

This won't be a popular decision but I would draft Ekblad and keep him in the OHL next year. Let the Sabres continue the rebuild in 2014-15 and make a move or two at the 2015 draft with your D prospects after they have another year to develop.

penguins2946* 12-10-2013 07:38 PM

For some reason, I really want Ristolainen on the Pens. I have no idea why. How about Pouliot for him? No? I'll see my way out.

terrynb24 12-10-2013 07:39 PM

The Sabres won't trade Myers unless it's overpayment. The idea that Myers is bad is crazy. The people that continue to say he's bad are the people that haven't watched one of Myers games this year. You can compare the idea that Myers is bad to the idea that Yakupov is a lazy russian-both aren't true. He's playing great defensively while still adding some offense and physicality. If you want Myers you're going to have to part with a top player.

EA Sports GM 12-10-2013 08:12 PM

Schenn's for Myers with picks added could be good if Buffalo drafts Ekblad. Although there's no necessity for Buffalo to trade him.
