http://www.vancouversun.com/business...141/story.html

I know this may be old news for some, but I found it pretty interesting. I'm sure some of you have see the weird skate protype Jonathan Toews was seen using in a practice.

Bauer Hockey, the world’s leading manufacturer of ice hockey equipment, will unveil a revolutionary, state-of-the-art line of hockey equipment never before seen in the sport. This “concept car” of hockey equipment was designed exclusively for only six elite-level athletes in the world – including Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks, Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals, Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers.

The athletes are expected to begin wearing the revolutionary product this month and during international play in the early weeks of February.

WHEN: Thursday, December 19, 2013 3 p.m.

AIREAYE 12-17-2013 09:35 PM

I'm tuning in on Thursday for sure!

This is an interesting way of generating hype for them.

I don't care if they work well or not, they look like space ships and that alone is enough to make me want them!

Some leaked reports were saying that particular skate is going to be around $1200.

CarpeNoctem 12-17-2013 09:48 PM

I think that will feel very weird to skate on. It has to save another 100 grams and might actually be so light that it feels flimsy. Plus, new hockey strategy. Literally shoot the puck through your opponents skates:laugh: It'd lead to a few more goals against!

Based on the previews, looks like continuing down the path of sacrificing durability for lightweight. Really only benefits the pros who are constantly getting new equipment anyways...

Chau Vo 12-17-2013 11:20 PM

I imagine sticks in skates will become an even bigger problem with those holders.

Exactly right. Get ready for an onslaught of tripping penalties.

Agree.. I am unsure of this idea

Noticed it says Zero G on the holder.. Could be possible model name

Lonny Bohonos 12-18-2013 02:23 AM

I do not see pucks fitting through those gaps.

Anyways awesome to see some new developments.

izzy3 12-18-2013 03:49 AM

Gotta stock up on the TUUK holders I guess... :shakehead

That's only my grocery budget for the next 6 months, it's not like I need to eat or anything.

Definitely gonna tune in, love Bauer equipment, and luckily I get out early because of finals. :D

It's not like I'll be able to afford it or anything...

"This “concept car” of hockey equipment was designed exclusively for only six elite-level athletes in the world"

This can't be right. I didn't get any to try . . .

Zero gravity skates. Lovely.

I don't think that sticks look like they'll fit through there any more than they do on regular skates TBQH. Actually, to me, the holes look smaller than the middle of a current holder:

A few thoughts on the skates:

- Price really doesn't matter. These are not for non-elite players. You'd better have some disgusting edge control to skate on those. Or even balance on them for any length of time.

- Looks like playing the puck off the skate/holder is going to be very different in these and require a major adjustment. NHL'ers make it look super easy, but in these skates I imagine it'll be tricky even for them.

- I don't have any inside info, but I feel pretty confident saying that these holders are not going to be replacing Tuuks entirely, certainly not in the near future.

Malarowski 12-18-2013 12:25 PM

The big question is: Who is Sergey?

There is more empty space in the hollow area for a stick blade to get caught through.

Ovechkin's brother.

That's Sergei so there might be a 7th elite player testing these. Not sure if Ovi continued with his brothers name on anything but his KHL gloves.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic but those are Ovi's skates. The yellow laces are a dead giveaway.

Hm no, no sarcasm intended. *shrug*

Mine have yellow laces too! ;) Maybe the spelling is a bit more flexible than I thought. Doesn't really matter anyway.

Very good point you make there. I do that very well with regular skates but in those? Who the hell knows!

Pucks do fit through the current TUUK holder, at least in larger sizes. To me, the new holder look like it's designed to close up that gap.

Isn't that Gunnarsson with Reeboks?

Jarick 12-19-2013 10:31 AM

Wow, that looks super light and super expensive. Glad to see innovation and hope the tech trickles down the next few years!
