How the NHL referees treat the New York Rangers

Is anyone else concerned by how many goals they have disallowed against us this season ? I know they say that they even out over the course of a 82 game season but I don't see that happening.

Do you think the coaching change has anything to do with this ? I know torts would argue calls etc. Were AV doesn't ask for an explanation on most calls.

Curious to hear your opinions :)

Btw not trying to turn this into a torts VS AV thread lol

I haven't noticed anything different from the previous seasons.

Sathers gotta stop hogging the money and get back to making his weekly payoffs.

I haven't noticed the goals so much as the horrendous calls in general. The joke of a major against Kreider being the latest example. You could say that cost the Rangers the game.

I don't disagree.

I think it's just incompetence in general more than OMG THE REFS HATE US.

Yeah. I'm sure the NHL just loves to see their biggest American market lose games.

There is no conspiracy. The refs are just not that good.

League over-expansion and moving from one to two refs.

When you previously had to have at most 12 refs to work any one night (24 team league, 12 games max at any one night), you now need 30 (30 team league, 15 games possible a night, 2 refs each game).

That's triple the number of spots you need to fill. thats a fairly large dilution of the talent pool. You now need to hire NHL refs that would maybe not have been able to get out of the ECHL in the early 90s.

The Gloaming 01-13-2014 11:48 PM

The refs suck in almost every NHL game I've seen. The reffing in General has been absolute trash this year. The war room hasn't been any better.

Kane One 01-14-2014 12:11 AM

Yep, referees would risk losing their career because for some reason, they hate the Rangers of all teams.

Referees just suck. There's nothing more to it.

aufheben 01-14-2014 12:15 AM

I think people severely underestimate how hard being a ref must be.

If it truly is so hard, they should add another referee to watch the game in the stands, but obviously in a secure area. Until they want to admit how hard it is, I don't have any pity towards them, especially since they used to call more penalties. Did they all suddenly go blind?

I don't disagree with this, but my point is that it's nuts to think there's a conspiracy. Subjectivity is the nature of it, even if they have rules to follow.

This is what kills me. The "war room," which should have guys really adept at their job, ****s **** up all the time, too!

I don't even think they **** up that badly. To be honest, every goal they seem to **** up in the war room all has to do with the rule not allowing pucks to be kicked in, except they don't define what a kick is. Just don't allow any puck to go off the skate and the problem is solved.

Cake or Death 01-14-2014 12:50 AM

I see no bias against us. We get crap calls for and against us, and it's the same thing every time I watch two other teams play. The officiating simply isn't that good. All things considered though, not sure what else you'd expect. Today's game has so much going on and moves so freakin fast that mistakes are bound to happen. In the end, the refs don't have much bearing anyway: the good teams will keep winning, the bad teams will still keep losing, and the mediocre teams will stay mediocre.

Overcast 01-14-2014 02:26 AM

Refs are just awful to the point of ruining games is all. Half the time they don't know the rule/s for a given play, go with their gut reaction of what they think they saw and that's the call that stands because "it was the call on the ice". If it happens to go to Toronto, then whatever they say (regardless of being right) stands. Never going to change until the refs are better and don't do things like hand out make-up calls to appease a team.

Just don't understand how, with 4 officials on the ice for a game, they can constantly miss blatant calls and get others absolutely 100% wrong and it will STILL stand, despite all the video replays and what have you. All because it was "the call on the ice". :dunno:

I think you're on the right track here. But I'd take it a step further and put both the refs above the ice. Need the linesmen for faceoffs and such, but get the refs above the ice. Give them each a half of the ice to monitor. These guys, on the ice, can't keep up. If they could, they'd still be playing!

HatTrick Swayze 01-14-2014 08:43 AM

As much as it may **** me of in the moment, I can handle a bad call from a ref (like the Kreider major). That's a judgement call that has to be made quickly. It happens.

What I can't handle is the wacky stuff the Rangers have dealt with from Toronto. The Miller no-goal, Galchenyuk good goal from the "war room" is inexcusable. Among others.

NYR2007 01-14-2014 08:46 AM

The poo would have 12 goals from the two they disallowed ... The Toronto game they waved off for no reason and the Philly game again quick whistle . I understand it was a delayed penalty but goalie never controlled it

I get that it's hard. It's a fast paced game and they can't always have a clear view of all the action. That said, what infuriates me is when they make calls based on what they think happened as opposed to what they actually saw happen. That's inexcusable, yet it happens all the time. I'm fine with them missing a call...they are human and nobody expects them to be perfect. But when they make a phantom call because they saw someone fall down and assume a penalty took place is a completely different story. I can't stand that, yet it happens quite frequently. I'd rather them miss a bunch of calls than make one up.

Kane One 01-14-2014 03:32 PM

They should also get rid of the "I lost the puck, so I'll just blow the play dead" rule. Just make it that if losing the puck results in a goal, it should be reviewed no matter what.

Also, make goalie interference reviewable if the puck goes into the net. Like that JVR play vs. the Devils a few days ago.

I've been an ice hokey official for 15 years and worked as high up as high school hockey. Yeah it is a tough sport to officiate and things move really fast at times so I can only imagine how fast the best players in the world do things.

That being said, anyone who think an on ice official has it "in" for a particular team is embarrassing themselves by posting it here. No way is it even possible and it would be so noticeable that the ref or linesman would be canned by the NHL right away.

I think what has happened this year is the officiating has been inconsistent. One day every little thing is called and the next, nothing is called. It seems like more judgement has been granted to the refs this year when it comes to stick fouls like hooking. Interference is also not called as tight as it was a few years ago either. The thing is though, that the NHL and the players have all already adjusted to the "new" standard of enforcement and no longer do you see players putting their stick into the mid section of another player to slow them down. So as a result, the refs don't need to call that as much and are not as concerned, most likely anyway, that if they let that little hook go that now everyone on the ice will start hooking- that fear is gone now that the players have adjusted. From the start officials are taught to manage the game and right now, the game, because of the heightened standards, kind of manages itself.

Idlerlee 01-16-2014 07:26 AM

The refs just have bad eyes, they probably couldnt care less what team they are officiating.

chosen 01-16-2014 07:29 AM

Refs can affect a single game.

For your team or against your team.

Go through every team's fans comments on this website and astoundingly, it appears that every team is being picked on by the refs. What an amazing coincidence!
