PANTHERS
  • On Tuesday, the NHL officially announced that the Panthers and the BB&T Center will host the 2015
    NHL Entry Draft
. It will be the second draft to be held in South Florida. The last time the draft was held
in the Sunshine state, the Panthers drafted Stephen Weiss, who currently leads the team in multiple
franchise records including games played, goals, assists, and points.

  • In the franchise series, the Panthers have dominated the Islanders. They own a 39-27-8-7 record
against New York in 82 meetings. The record is even more impressive when the two meet in South
Florida as the Cats boast a 21-11-6-2 record.

  • If defenseman Brian Campbell can either find the net or help a teammate find the net, he will record his
100th point as a Panther. He is certainly getting enough chances to do so. Soupy owns the second highest
time on ice per game average with 27.55 minutes (Ryan Suter 29:38)

  • Since their inception, (including this year in which the Panthers are sitting on the salary cap floor), the
Panthers have been a team known to usually be salary cap cellar dwellers. However, if owner Vinnie Viola
keeps the promise he made on Saturday, things could be changing for the better. "They've given me the green
light to be a cap team. So that's fantastic. Not a floor team, a cap team. We're excited.", GM Dale Tallon told
    the Sun Sentinel
. "They've given me an open [wallet]. I'm pumped up. We can do hockey deals now, what the
best deal is as far as hockey is considered." While the prospect is nice, this promise may not hold a lot of
weight, especially if it is relying on the proposition the team is set to make to Broward County, which seeks $70
million in tourism tax dollars to cover the team's recent losses.

ISLANDERS
  • Defender Travis Hamonic will miss tonight's game with an upper body injury, the Islanders announced after today's
    morning skate
. While he won't hit the scorecard very often, Hamonic is a great defensive presence. Usually
playing over 25 minutes a game, he has blocked 82 shots on the year which ranks inside the top 30 in the league.
Hamonic is a big part of an Islanders defense which has made it's presence physically well known in front of the net
this year. Andrew MacDonald leads the league in blocked shots (159) and Thomas Hickey ranks 15th with 92. Matt
    Carkner
will get the nod in place of Hamonic.

  • Center John Taveras was named the NHL's first star for the week ending on January 12th. The Isles' young center
has been on fire, logging 10 points in four games, all Islander wins.

  • Another Islander riding a hot streak is goalie Kevin Poulin. He has won six of his last seven games, including five
straight. Five of those efforts were 30+ save games for Poulin, including a 46 save night against San Jose on
December 10th. If the Panthers are going to get past Poulin and the Islanders' defense, they will need to get traffic
in front of the net and capitalize on rebound opportunities.

Although he hasn't gotten the results he has deserved, goalie Tim Thomas has more than done his job
recently, making an average of 32 saves a game in his last five games and only allowing more than two
goals once. The Cats will need Thomas to come up big for them again tonight as they face off against
an Islanders team that has scored a whopping 18 goals in their last four games, including a seven goal
effort against Dallas last Monday.

So Kulikov getting the healthy scratch tonight.

Aksu 01-14-2014 03:08 PM

edit. Is olsen back?!

ShootIt 01-14-2014 03:18 PM

Edit....

Why not put Guds and Olsen back together?

RampageNate 01-14-2014 03:22 PM

Unless I missed something, if Olsen is activated tonight, someone needs to go to IR or be sent down.

Harv tweeted Olsen and Winchester still not ready to go.

iam76 01-14-2014 03:27 PM

que the kuli trade threads

ShootIt 01-14-2014 03:28 PM

i'm confused now. Kulikov isn't a scratch?

Montsy14 01-14-2014 03:32 PM

I never saw anything indicating Kulikov was a scratch.. I saw Harv tweet something about Matthias being scratched though.

IIRC the OP lineup had Olsen in instead of Kulikov, unless I'm already losing it.

EnforceTheLaus 01-14-2014 03:43 PM

Olsen isn't ready yet.

PROMputt 01-14-2014 04:06 PM

Hey guys just a quick question as I do not get to watch many Panther games. When Snow traded up and drafted deHann over Kulikov I was upset and confused as Kulikov came higher rated and seemed the obvious choice. Then the little I did see of Kulikov he looked really good and the deHann pick further infuriated and confused me. I have not seen Kulikov play this year, but has he been that bad that he is being scratched or is a coach/player thing? Thanks for any help and here's to a good game tonight(still love Bergy and wish he was playing for the Islanders!)

Read in the game notes that Olsen is still not ready. Kuli should be in. I changed it.

There. GDT finished.

I'll be there tonight.

hockeydude1 01-14-2014 04:20 PM

5 Hole 01-14-2014 04:48 PM

He had a few rough stretches this season, but he is playing a better all around game now compared to the beginning of the season. He still has his fair share of brain farts, but he looks more confident now, and I hope it continues to improve

Howboutthempanthers 01-14-2014 05:44 PM

I would have been mad if Kulikov would have been a healthy scratch. Very mad.

seafoam 01-14-2014 06:02 PM

Hey guys, good luck tonight!

What are your feelings going into this? We're pretty concerned about the Donovan-Carkner pairing tonight now that Hamoinc is out, it could be a 5-4 type game.

JonathanHuberdoh 01-14-2014 06:17 PM

Expecting a loss tonight. We are starved for offense and the Isles are red hot.
