Garter belt or velcro on your shorts?

It may be a while since I played, but these velcro flap thingies on my new shorts seem like some new fangled unnecessary thing for holding up socks.

Which is best?

Renbarg 02-18-2014 08:37 AM

Velcro. No unnecessary metal/plastic hanging near your thigh. Why would you wear a garter belt in addition to your shorts, if the shorts already provide the function?

MattGTI 02-18-2014 08:49 AM

Not only that, but the shorts function as your jock as well. Jock shorts, with the Velcro tabs to hold up your socks is easily one of the best hockey innovations in recent memory. Ease and comfort all in one, as opposed to the alternative setup.

Actually the Velcro shorts aren't new at all. I got them when I first starting playing hockey as a kid. Sometime around 1995. I've never tried garters because the Velcro is perfect.

Goonzilla 02-18-2014 09:06 AM

I'll give them a whirl, but there must be some old school types who still prefer the garter belt.

It's got to be the only time a man can put a garter belt on without being a weirdo.

definitely the jock shorts with velcro

way more comfortable than a garter belt

jazzykat 02-18-2014 10:56 AM

Sorry dude, I love the jock shorts(tights) with velcro. No extra piece(s) of equipment to lose.

Chau 02-18-2014 11:17 AM

I actually tape around my thighs. I wouldn't advise doing this though unless you get an unlimited supply of tape.

SillyMe 02-18-2014 11:34 AM

The compression pants/jock I bought online didn't have inside straps, so I felt the jock moving around...bought a jock/garter combo(Reebok), and that takes care of both.
I have no issue with a garter.

i use i stand alone jock strap and a garter belt. the belt is way more comfortable than wearing another layer around my legs (i wear core shorts and underarmor)

Same here. Me likes my socks tight

Ducks Nation* 02-18-2014 01:53 PM

I always tape around my thighs and over my shin pads.

jorbjorb 02-18-2014 03:58 PM

velcro

mistrhanky 02-18-2014 04:43 PM

I wear long compression pants with velcro. Makes them easier to get both knee braces on and off and the velcro socks thing works great.

Been playing for 45 years. Used to use garters when that's all there was. Buttons always fell off so I used pennies. Had pennies all over the bottom of my bag. They got in my gloves and skates and were a pain in the ***. When I was about 15 (1979ish) I had my mom sew my socks to a pair of shorts....Problem solved. Unfortunately I wasn't bright enough to have the cup built in.
I would never use a garter again and I hate new equipment.

CunniJA 02-18-2014 10:07 PM

Velcro all the way. Using a garter belt for hockey just ruins way too many fantasies for me...

StoneColdGMJN 02-18-2014 11:55 PM

Garter belt through and through. My socks tend to pull off from the Velcro. Garter belt keeps my socks up nice and tight without any pressure or anything around my thighs.

American in Paris 02-19-2014 03:31 AM

Compression shorts with velcro.

DarrenBanks56 02-19-2014 06:05 AM

i just put sweatpants over my jockshorts and shinpads, Then the hockey shorts over my sweat pants. no need for those stupid hockey socks.

keysersoze98 02-20-2014 10:41 AM

I use the Itech shorts with jock/garder/velcro all included. I still use the garder from habit but did use the velcro a few times. It just didn't feel right. Habit I guess...

When I was first dating my gf, I was talking about my equipment and said something about my garter and her face was like :amazed: . Ha, I didn't even think about it while saying it.

Bengerm77 02-20-2014 02:02 PM

Garters have gone the way of the buggy whip and the dinosaur, velcro is the way to go. Fewer things to deal with (integrated jock shorts with velcro tabs are plentiful) and nobody has to talk about their garters anymore.

I'm not sure if I want to know what hockey fantasies you have...

Have relented. No complaints and saves money on a new belt, but the Velcro must deteriorate over time on the shorts and socks. Someone must have had their sock fall down.

Of course they don't last forever. But they'll last you a pretty long time. My last shorts ripped after 4 years or so. Velcro was still good to go by that point. But they're also 30 bucks. Something that lasts you 4 years for 30 bucks is a good deal.

My current pair of shorts is 5+ years old and I'm going to replace them soon due to the stitching on the fabric but the velcro is still 100% fine.
