Edm.Oilers can thank/blame J.Eberle for 8am skate Friday. Eberle went to D.Eakins asking for early skate so team could watch Canada/USA semi

Good stuff!

Congrats to the hockey gals!

Very proud of their gutsy effort to come back and win. Sometimes you gotta be lucky to be good, and that post the turning point.

I sure hope Mr. Eakins decided to watch the game with the rest of the team so he could watch and learn how a team is supposed to move the ****ing puck around on a powerplay. The passing on the powerplay which led to the winning goal was better puck movement than I've seen all season from the Oilers.

Yep, pretty sure it is.

The post and a pretty epic dive in OT. Not that I'm complaining.

Not a dive right skate kicks right skate. Accidental, but it knocked Wickenheiser off balance.

Definitely a penalty. She made contact with Haley's right foot and it caused her to trip up. It was a good call. Could've even been a penalty shot, but I guess the trip wasn't quite blatant enough, and it was incidental. But that's certainly still a penalty.

CornKicker 02-20-2014 03:11 PM

its too bad for Knight that she ended up having her feet collide with haleys because that girl can fly and she was 2 strides away from being right beside her. she is a great player...were just better. also that Spooner girl can fly as well. womens hockey is faster than it was for sure, the future is bright for the girls.

i get the non call on the PS because HW didnt have control of the puck,

They really need to allow bodychecking in the women's game. It's so paternalistic to keep it out.

Actually it might stifle the growth of the sport if they have hitting. Canada and the US have a ton of history, experience and strength in the game right now, if you let those players, who are used to playing physical hockey growing up, play the 2nd and 3rd tier teams, they will run them out of the rink and things will probably get more silly and one-sided then they are now.

The Japanese team probably forfits if Canada can physically pound them into submission.

I posted this in the thread on the Olympic Hockey board.
Quote:

Here are some of the sizes of players on the Japanese, German and Russian teams.

Shiori Koike - 5'2" 112
Sena Suzuki - 5'5" 125
Mika Hori - 5'4" 119
Haruna Yoneyama - 5'3" 121
Yurie Adachi - 5'1" 112
Moeko Fujimoto - 5'1" 116
Yuka Hirano - 5'2" 114
Nina Kamenik - 5'3" 121
Susanne Fellner - 5'3" 125
Alyona Khomich - 5'6" 116
Alexandra Vafina - 5'5" 127
Yekaterina Smolina - 5'5" 119
Yelena Dergachyona - 5'3" 125

The comparison to weight differences between NHLers is not particularly relevant. There's a big difference between taking a hit when you're 180 lbs and outweighed by 40+ lbs and when you're 110 lbs and outweighed by 40+ lbs.
Canada and the US could adjust and handle a game with bodychecking. Most of the other countries could not. That's more of a long-term evolution that will eventually happen in the women's game.

Thanks for posting that. Not ashamed to say I initially thought it was a bad call. Obviously not cross checking but a deserved minor nonetheless.

The fact that the ref called it a cross check probably means she just got lucky that it was an actual penalty. But that seems fitting for how the rest of the game was officiated.

I'm glad Corn Kicker pointed out that it wouldn't have been a penalty shot since she didn't have the puck, I totally missed that.

Also, everyone's favorite Robby Ford enjoying the win too:

I just love how this .gif ends with the Judd Nelson fist pump

I was laughing about the cross-checking, but the way Knight falls, and then Hayley falls, it conceivably looks like Knight cross-checked her.

Not as crazy as I first thought.

That tweet was referencing the men's game tomorrow. But the Oilers had the women's game on after practice just in time for overtime.

And Team Canada's powerplay wasn't very good. They had a 5 on 4, 5 on 3, and then a 5 on 4 in regulation and they didn't do anything. They also had a couple other pp's that I missed. Oilers do pretty well with the 4 on 3 in OT.
