Holmgren's last trade deadline

If this is Homer's last year as GM, how do you rate his moves at the deadline?

I would grade these moves as C.

MacDonald is an upgrade to Meszaros.
MacDonald is not a replacement for Timonen long term.
Still have 2 slow defenders in Grossman and Schenn, and it looks like a big hole on the top pairing.

He didn't get a winger for Giroux either.

JDinkalage Morgoone 03-05-2014 03:03 PM

This was a good deadline considering all the rumors we heard about gutting our youth

CanadianFlyer88 03-05-2014 03:03 PM

I'm not sure how Holmgren can be faulted for not buying when the prices are highest to fix the biggest needs of the club.

DrinkFightFlyers 03-05-2014 03:04 PM

His deadline was "meh" this year. I'm cool with getting MacDonald, not thrilled but its ok. Will be better if he is signed to a nice contract. Getting a third plus for Mez is about as good as you can hope. Nothing earth shattering. Nothing great. Nothing bad. Just "meh."

Funny though...with the rumors yesterday and everyone freaking out, you would think that Homer blew up the team (like he keeps doing according to those freaking out yesterday).

dookie88 03-05-2014 03:05 PM

Depends on MacDonald's extension imo.

I agree and getting rid of Grossmann can wait until the draft.

In all likelihood, there isn't an available replacement for Kimmo. He can't force another team to give up a franchise player, without a gross overpayment. Especially when most of the teams with #1 D ARE Stanley Cup contenders. It would just create an unnecessary hole in their line up.

Yeh, he is contracted and the value will likely be similar due to that. (ie not UFA on deadline day, which can sway value depending on team trading for them.)

If they say got to the conf semis and a D man went down and they had traded Grossmann as well they would have ofc regreted it. So it is understandable.

GKJ 03-05-2014 03:12 PM

Surprised Holmgren wasn't in on Vanek given the price it ended up being

Boyle and Markov are the last men standing... (in terms of 1st pairing guys)

Though if Niskanen made it instead of Orpik that would be nice...

If folks can forget all of the rumors and not hold Homer guilty of every crazy rumor that's put forth on here, twitter, facebook, etc, he is a fine GM and has done a nice job here as has he done in the past getting Coots, Simmer, Shenn, Read,Raffl ,etc etc......This is his 3rd year of the " rebuild" of sorts and things are looking pretty darn good for our club now and in the future..........Sorry for being optimistic folks.

FlyersFanz 03-05-2014 03:17 PM

Probably, but at the draft he'll have almost 12MM in space (maybe more if he makes moves)

Great...two or three 35+yr olds for the Flyers roster coming up

I thought you were against bringing in forwards?

The rays of sunshine you are emitting are giving me sunburn.

Until the organization completely and totally overhauls how they treat and develop young defensemen, they aren't set for the future.

I do not see MacDonald as a top 4 defenseman, more like a 5/6 guy.
There were better defenders than MacDonald available, but maybe Homer wanted to wait until the draft.
Maybe the other teams wanted the world for a top 4 defenseman, it possible.
I just thought that with Timonen likely to retire, now would be the time to make a move for a top 4 defenseman.
Why wait until the draft when the other GM's now know you have a hole on your top pairing.
That would seem to put you in a worse bargaining position, than now.

SAINDON 03-05-2014 03:28 PM

If this is Homer's last trade deadline, I think he did well and is allowing this team to finish out the season and allow his replacement (Hextall) to make the moves he feels this team needs.

I am against trading top assets for forwards, we need to rebuild this defense first.
I mentioned it in passing because other posters seemed to feel the need for a winger for Giroux.
Not my main focus or priority, of course.
I did not factor that in with my evaluation or I would have thought the grade of C was too high.

Respectfully i believe that line of thinking has been changed and we currently have a nice crop of big young Dmen developing down in the minors.Hopefully a few of the lads develop along nicely and make it up the the big show in a few years ......

The treatment of Gus and the way he's been constantly benched for inferior veterans indicates they haven't changed, at least to me.

GKJ 03-05-2014 03:42 PM

I think we have a decent group of serviceable callups on defense and good prospects. But I have no faith they'd get the right opportunity, because the record of this organization is that they are never provided that. Still waiting for Brandon Manning to lock down an NHL spot given that he's been on the cusp of doing so for, like, 6 years it seems like.

There is not a legitimate reason anyone can provide to suggest differently.

Did you not read the trade deadline thread yesterday when the Kesler rumors were around? People freaking out that the sky was falling and Homer doesn't understand that you can't turn the team over every year, despite the fact that a) no trade had been made at that point, and b) no turnover of the roster has really occurred since the Richards/Carter deal, and not much occurred before that.

lancer247 03-05-2014 03:42 PM

I say we still trash Homer because i am sure he was thinking about doing something dumb! Isn't that how it works around here?

The guy builds a cup contender for a few years then tears it down and has done a nice job of rebuilding a young athletic team along with some decent prosepcts in the system. He hasn't traded young players for aging vets and hasn't thrown away draft picks. He has plugged holes with veterans (usually @ $500K more then they deserve)that are still producing (Streit, Vinny, Emery, Hall) while they wait for young players (Schenns, Coots, Voracek, Simmonds, Read) and prospects (Alt, Hagg, Morin, Ghost, Stolarz, Cousins, Laughton) to develop.

If McDonald re-signs the D is respectable again and can be solid if the forwards hold up their end.

I wouldn't be surposed if Kimmo re-signs another 1 year deal.

???? - Coburn
McDonald - Streit
Gus - Schenn

I agree, how do you develop a Dman when he's sitting in the pressbox all the time. Gus needs confidence and the Flyers aren't giving him any.

BrindamoursNose 03-05-2014 03:48 PM

He got a piece that could be helpful without giving up a 1st or roster player.

Kept the young kids (Schenn and Couturier) to let them grow and our D prospects are in Philly.

No problem here. It was a good deadline in my mind.

He acquired a piece to still compete, but got rid of weight like Meszaros to recoup a draft pick.
