I started this earlier, now I'll finish it - Leafs payroll

The Additions to this year.

Free Agents
Bryan Marchment $2 Mill
Joe Nieuwendyk $2 Million
Ken Klee $1.5 Mill
Owen Nolan $6.5 Mill

Pay Increases
Bryan McCabe - $2.85 - $3.5 Mill (+ $650 000)
Antropov - $925 - Same but with bonus'

Gone
Doug Gilmour - $4 (Would have taken a paycut)
Jonas Hoglund $1.54 Mill (Would have been forced to take a paycut)
Paul Healey - $950 000
Glen Wesley - $2.5 Mill (I think he got that in Carolina)
Robert Svehla $4 Mill (Retired)
Jyrki Lumme - $1.75 (Blows Goats)

So they have added $12.65 Million but lost $14.74 meaning their payroll is actually less than last years. That's inlcuding the addition of Owen Nolan and you could argue that he would have been in last years budget, so he wouldn't have been an addition to the payroll. Coming from a business that profits Millions and Millions of dollars every year, it's pathetic that they say their hands are tied. I was just curious to see where the payroll actually was. I guess you can say it's in good shape for the work stoppage.

I think I can safely say you can add $1.6m to that when Green's picked up, possibly more pending the outcome of the insurance claim in McCabe's injury.

This would be great if some of the numbers weren't completely misleading. You can't include Gilmour, Wesley, or Nolan's full salary as part of last year's budget because the Leaf's weren't paying them until the trade deadline.

The Leaf's payed Gilmour less than $1 million last season so how can you say that the Leaf's trimmed $4 million from the budget by not renewing his contract? Do you see why I say those numbers are misleading? Im pretty sure Nolan only made $5.5 million last year too.

Anyway, you're list also doesn't include the fact that almost every Leaf player received a raise this season as part of his normal contract. The Leaf's payroll isn't less than year's, quite the contrary, it's substantially higher.

Uhh..Gary Roberts? Robert Reichel? Tie Domi? All got raises. Renberg makes 2.2 this year as well..I think thats a raise from last year..not positive.

Sorry, Stevie, that's not a very well-researched effort on your behalf.

To add a couple of things that haven't been pointed out yet...

Corson - 2.4 mil
Lumme -500k or so (buyout...)
Errikson - 300k or so (buyout...)

Our team salary is definately up, but I don't think it's up by that much...

Did we buy out Eriksson? I thought his contract just naturally ran out last year :dunno:

Rand 10-02-2003 02:11 PM

Lumme and Ericksson were bought out, Corson is also gone.
The Leafs only paid a very small portion of Nolan, Wesley, and Gilmour's contracts so you can't account for their full salaries.

Domi and Roberts, among others also got raises.

All in all I'm thinking the payroll should be at least 2-3M higher.
