Should try, I mean really try to convert Eller to winger

I still think it's possible. He rarely played more than 2 games in a row as one. At least not in the last 2 years I don't think.

I think if they really give him time there (maybe next year) he can figure it out.

If that could work it would just be too beautiful. Especially for line up sake. I don't think DD and Pleks are going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, I'd hate to have to trade him for peanuts and he pans out somewhere else.

HabsProspectsExpert 03-28-2014 02:46 AM

Eller is a perfect 3rd center (he is just actually in a very bad slump). Hopefully, Briere will be gone sooner than later, Galchenyuk at 2nd line winger with Pleky is good spot for him in the moment and could replace DD and Pleky at center when injuries will come. We are fine for the moment.

I think maybe for next year we should start this experiment.

Right now everything's working for sure.

ECWHSWI 03-28-2014 03:37 AM

right now, should stay where he is, not only because of the team, but it's been a while he wasnt with Ws where he and the line as a whole played well, they're not converting much but they play well... step #1 in getting his confidence back.

JLP 03-28-2014 05:50 AM

Worth a try but depends on what happens offseason. If DD remains a lock at top line C (and White/Prust have been fine on the 4th C duties) then that leaves Plex, Eller, Briere for two spots, and effectively blocks any progression for Galchenyuk. So something needs to happen if we want the guy many see as our future franchise center to actually get to play center.

Analyzer 03-28-2014 07:49 AM

Eller is our biggest centre and our best at faceoffs, or at least he was.

I have always found that Eller has played his worst games as winger. It is true that the experiment was short lived, however, it was clear (to me at least) that the game on the wing did not suit him at all. The contrast in his game was always so apparent when he would come back to center after playing a couple of games as a winger.

I think Eller's position on this team will be as a 3rd or 4th line center going forward.

Ezpz 03-28-2014 08:24 AM

Why would we convert our only center capable of winning faceoffs to wing?

Agreed. They should try, at the very least. There's a logjam at center and I can't see this management quit on Eller.

Because he lacks something called hockey sense. He has some nice tools to work with though and he has size.

hockeyfan2k11 03-28-2014 08:35 AM

LMAO. Move him to wing when we lack size down the middle.

This place. :help:

Just trade him to a team that will know how to use him.

I don't see what's so extreme about the idea. Size at center is nice but not fundamental when you've got wingers with size. Example : Pacioretty - Desharnais - Vanek

Patccmoi 03-28-2014 09:02 AM

He actually played a decent time as winger in the last few years, and I thought he was horrible each time.

Sadly I think we might have to trade him if we plan to keep DD. He should be a 2nd-3rd line center, he has the skill for it, but I also think that Galchenyuk really needs to be a center soon.

With DD, Plek and Galchenyuk locking 1-2-3, not sure what to do with him. Maybe for next year he could play with Galch as 3rd line center and they can alternate position and see how it goes from there. It's always good to have 1 extra center in case injury happens, but I just don't think Eller is a center that converts well to the wing when need be.

LastChancePrice 03-28-2014 09:33 AM

Problem with Eller is probably the injury he got in last year playoff. It burn his confidence when its time to take room.

He doesnt have to worry about that anymore we dont have diaz. :sarcasm:

Brainiac 03-28-2014 10:24 AM

He's not in a slump. A slump lasts a few weeks, not a few months.

He's not experiencing any 'growing pains', he's turning 25 soon. We should not expect any improvement from him.

Faceoffs, really? Some of you guys are still overrating him big time.

A very telling stat (yeah, i know, stats) is that he's got almost a 1/1 ratio for goals and assists (11/12 this year, 44/56 career). Last year was sort of an anomaly for him, it seems (8/22).

He's got the skills you want from a winger: size, speed and a good shot. Why not?

DD and Gangsta are not going anywhere, so I'd convert Eller to wing and give the 3rd line center spot to Galchenyuk permanently.

I disagree, since he started the season on fire with the EGG line. Eller's confidence problems IMO stem from MT bouncing him around the line up.

with Pleks gone home for family reasons (I really hope all is well there) I say why not move Eller to wing, on the EGG line.

Eller can still take draws if need be and he has the right skill set to fit with the 2 Gally's. And it's Florida, so theywould pose less of a threat to our 3rd line if Briere or Bournival are centering that line.

Lebowski 03-28-2014 10:31 AM

Might as well trade him for a position of need, which is what I think is going to happen in the off-season.

Ideally, he'd be the one in Desharnais' current position, but he never quite took the step forward that most expected from him. It's too bad, but I think we're fast approaching the point where we'll have to move on. It's either him of Plekanec.

I agree. And wether we trade Eller or Pleks, we'll regret it to a point. Although the return for Pleks would be very very high right now. In the offseason a team like Anaheim or Chicago would be all over us for either one. And IMHO, from what I've seen of MB thus far, he'd probably pick to move Plekanec, especially with Galchenyuk waiting in the wings, to get that coveted big winger. That is, unless he pulls off a miracle to resign Vanek. Then all bets are off.

Brainiac 03-28-2014 10:38 AM

You guys are completely delusional if you want to keep Eller over Plekanec.

Completely. Delusional. :help:

HabsSlappy 03-28-2014 10:52 AM

I am totally Ok with him staying at centre and playing on the third/fourth line. In fact, he has looked fabulous as our 4th line centre. Our 4th line is dangerous with Eller/Bournival/White. Sure they aren't the toughest 4th line, but they can pin teams deep and chip in here or there.

Even if Eller never develops into the 2nd line centre that I thought he would, I still like him on my team because he has size, knows how to use it to his advantage and he is responsible in his own end. He is good at carrying the puck out of his own end as well, which is an under-rated skill.

Well perhaps what we saw the first 3 games he play was just an illusion too, and that show he was not the one pushing that line forward and was the one following it. Anyway, hes definitivly not the player we saw last season. 17 points in 70 games. We want to trade him, but seriously, who would bite now?

What about those of us who want to keep Eller over Desharnais?

Also, that. Eller has little or almost no value right now. Maybe a pick at the draft. And not a first rounder, guys.

But yeah, half this board would sign him for 4x4M, right?

You'd be surprised how many teams would be interested in Eller if MB decided to trade him. I'm of the thought that if you trade Eller away now it'll just be another move the Habs will regret down the road.
