Wow. If they enforce those changes, we're in for a LOT of scoring.

Why do I see about half of this years playoff games being decided by the refs? :shakehead

triggrman 09-07-2005 12:40 PM

Because half the teams will be trying to cheat....

This will be the most significant "change" that there is, if they really do enforce all this. Ya, every year they say they are implementing a zero tolerance policy on obstruction, and every year it doesn't seem to work... however, you get the feeling that it's simply not going to be allowed now.

If this is implemented as planned, it will affect everything...

Defensemen in the NHL will change drastically. Getting a big hulking Scott Stevens or Robin Reghr clone won't be as important. There will be more emphasis on speed and positioning, rather than physical dominance. This should really benefit guys like Timonen, Hamhuis, and Eaton. Not sure about Zidlicky.. he uses interfences tactics alot. Can't really give and accurate opinion on Markov. Allison.. he's doomed. Ryan Suter should absolutely thrive in this enviroment. When I first saw this, I thought of Cale Hulse. Think how many interference penalties he got before all this... he's going to be putting up like 10 penalties a game!

"Backchecking" will be harder to pull off, because 80%+ of the backchecking that happening in the old NHL will now be illegal. It's really going to put more pressure on the defensemen to play good defenseman, and the goalies to stop more pucks.

There are likely going to be a ton more penalties called, which should benefit us. We should have a killer powerplay unit again. And our PK has always been pretty decent.

Speed is going to be a huge advantage to forwards as well. Guys like Kariya, Sullivan, Legwand, Erat, Johnson, Walker, etc should absolutely thrive in this. Not so sure about Hall and Hartnell, especially Hall. He's defeinitely a warrior, but he is below average in the speed and skill category. Harntell has more skill, so I think he'll be fine. There still will be physical play, but I think it won't be near as prevelant. Although it will be easier to park yourself in front of the net.

But all in all, I think this should definitely benefit us as a team. But then again, these are all predictions about unknown territory. Who would have thought that Milwaukee would have struggled in shootous with all that firepower? I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

If, they do call it like these videos show, the Predators will have a huge advantage, but I also agree that Hartnell and Hall might be effected negatively the most.

Zidlicky will still only get 3rd line time minutes but his stick hanldling and passing will help help him out a ton too.

On the penalty kill you can no longer just ice the puck so that means defensemen will have to be able to skate on the penalty kill too, Eaton and Markov neither have a problem with this.
