Vokoun and the Shootout

Nice piece about how Tomas has adapted to the shootout.....stoning all 5 shots so far....

Im very pleased, especially since it wasnt looking too good during the preseason.

I think it it awesome that Mace has already been in on the shootout action too!

We joke about Z having ice water in his veins but this article proves it. The last line states that before making the beautiful move he told his coach that he'll score, they will win, and everyone can go home. That is better than pointing out to center field and knocking a homerrun on the next pitch.

I definitely think that European players have a serious advantage in the SO.

They are much more used to it than the rest of the players.

Koun was horrid in training camp though. Trotz has done some kind of breakaway/shootout drill to end every practice this year and that is why Koun has produced.

to be fair...it seems like shooters are shooting down low, where he's strong. I fhink their best bet is going to be to try to beat him high.

vokoun's strength in shootouts is his athleticism... not being a strong positional guy,he's unpredictable as all get out to a shooter, because he tends to be a guesser

now having said that, goalies don't get much streakier than vokoun in some ways...when he's on a tear and full of self confidence, i cann't think of a better guy to have in net on the shootout....but sometime this year, it's my gut feeling vokoun will go thru a very bad shootout stretch too..

after watching mason in net in camp for all those shootouts, there's little doubt mason is a better shootout goalie most nights..

not that i'd trade vokoun for anyone, one thing it's hard to forget is vokoun's warrior attitude, and when he's full of confidence i think he might well be the best in the league those nights

Tomas Vokoun plays a hybrid style somewhere between the European stand-up style and the Quebec butterfly style. You'll notice he usually does a half-butterfly when going down. So, he'd decent up and down.

Anyhoo...

Isn't it cool to think that we got Tomas as a throw in during the Expansion Draft so we wouldn't take another of Montreal's goalies. This guy was languishing in their system, they'd given up on him. He was overweight and out of shape.

Now he's on top of the world.
