Non-Roster Players (question)

I had a question regarding league rules and people here some to be up on all the procedures.

I have several injured players on my yahoo fantasy team (Allison, Nylander) who are listed as Not Active because their NHL teams listed them as non-roster players. If they were on injured reserve I would be able to put them on my team's IR and they wouldn't be taking up roster spots. I was wondering how long an NHL team could list these players as non-roster players without placing them on injured reserve. Is there any advantage to a team to list a player as non-roster vs. placing them on IR?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've never heard of non-roster players. Yahoo usually just takes a week or two to recognize the guys on IR.
