Keane and Ottawa.

Did anyone else catch Muckler last night on televsion (Center Ice) when he was talking about Havlat and Ottawa's "Plan B" in replacing him for the season? One choice was to sign Steve Thomas but he is asking for around $900,000 for one year and I guess both Buffalo and Atlanta have talked about signing Thomas as well. Muckler then said, "I will scan the waiver wire this weekend to see who might be available as teams finalize their rosters and then we will go from there. Certainly signing a guy like Steve Thomas is an option but a trade would not be out of the equation either."

Anyways...would it not be possible for the Ottawa Sens to grab a younger and cheaper Mike Keane?? Just wondering.

Except Mike Keane won't replace any of the scoring lost by Havlat not re-signing, Thomas could. On top of that, the Sens lack natural LW'ers and Thomas has been a LW'er his entire career.

I suppose it is possible, but I doubt many teams pick up guys that have signed after training camp try-out. I'm guessing (hoping) its an un-written rule, since the canucks took the initiative to get Keane to come to their camp because he wants to play for the canucks. I'm sure Burke wouldn't be too pleased about Muckler picking up Keane.

Except like with all waiver pickups, the same rules apply in that the team picking up Keane would need to expose someone from their protected list. Not sure what Ottawa's situation is, but that's a risk for them I asume

You make a good point about scoring production but do you really think Thomas has that much more to offer than Keane??? Just wondering.

I dont think Sens would risk losing anyone for Keane, after all, Keane is a good depth guy, but Thomas is a better fit for Sens if they want the cup, and Thomas has always said that he wants a chance to win the cup!! Weird how he has been known for a playoff performer, and yet, never win a championship..

speaking of Havlat, I beginning to feel sick on what Sens is doing ( although also admires that), they offer Havlat way below his market value.. heck, i think they offer him 1.3M/year for like 3 years!?

for a 3rd highest scoring player on the best team in the league, good defensively, worth only $1.3? I'd say he is a good player worth at least $1.5-2.0M. Muckler is using Hossa as comparison on how he making only 2-3M.. but Hossa is a steal, and he signed the contract a couple years ago.. you cant compare that... Yashin was deserving, Havlat, its disappointing. I'd love to see him play for Sens, He certainly would add a lot more to their lineup than Thomas...

He is only in his 4th year. Ottawa has offered a $1.35M 1 year deal, and havlat countered with a $1.9M 1 year deal. Havlat has no ground to stand on. He doesn't have arbitration rights, Muckler said he won't trade him...it's either sign or sit. And with ottawa's depth, they can do that and not miss a beat.

Why would the Sens have to lose someone if they picked up Keane?? They have a roster spot open because of Havlat's departure. If I am wrong then it means they would have to lose a player even if they sign Thomas. So your point seems moot in this regard.

someone mentioned about picking up a player while losing one. Doesnt matter if Havlat is in the lineup or not, Sens do have a full roster now w/o Havlat, and if the rule says if they want to pick up someone at waiver, someone from the current Sens roster has to be gone? no?
Unless of course, I mis interpret the rules of adding new players, otherwise, I dont see how my point being " moot " ?

Look at Keane and Thomas' production from last season. Thomas has always been the better point producer.
