Cloutier Or Hedberg..Who Starts?

Who starts next game?

incawg 10-11-2003 07:40 PM

gotta go back with clouts. he's the starter.

Exactly, not even a question. Even if Cloutier had been so-so in game 1 I would say go back to him, but he was just as good as Hedberg tonight. No brainer. But it sure is nice to see a combined 0.500 GAA and .973 save %. It's obviously early but a good place to start from.

The only reason I can see Hedberg getting the start is because Cloutier had all kinds of trouble keeping the puck out of the net against Columbus, may be one of those teams that we out shoot badly and Cloutier may falter.

I don't beleive it's that cut and dry, I think Hedberg could become the starter if he earns it, I really think they will let the best goalie play for stretches.

I think Cloutier will play tonight. If he struggles, Hedberg will play against the Wings on Thursday. If he doesn't, then Cloutier will play on Thursday. Crawford will go with the hot hand in net.

Cloutier

I think this early on, it is cut and dry. The message Crawford would be sending Cloutier would be that he lied when he said that he was the #1. After all, Cloutier stopped 23 of 24 in his first game and the goal he allowed was a freaky carom off a point shot that he had no chance on. It's not like Hedberg outplayed him.

If I had to guess, I'd say Cloutier starts tonight and Thursday in Detroit, then Hedberg gets to play Minnesota on Saturday.

That's my feeling as well. Cloutier was named the #1 heading into this season and he has done nothing to lose it thus far.

Cloutier. He's still the starter, and we have to rest Hedberg for the playoffs. ;)

kmad 10-13-2003 09:14 AM

Cloutier for sure.

I agree with how you have the next 3 games distributed, I just don't think that Cloutier is for sure the number 1 at this point, I think they will let the best goalie play, I think that is the message Crawford has been sending so far. You don't trade a 2nd round pick for a guy and pay him 1 million + to not give him a chance to win the starters role.

Hedberg will get a chance to win the starters role, but he will have to do it from the backup position. The coaches and management have both been 100% clear on this issue. Hedberg is starting the season as the BACKUP. Where he goes from there will have a lot to do with both his play and Cloutier's. For the time being, however, they're not equals and they're not going to split games evenly.

Your right the Canucks brass has been very clear to the media, being very careful not to start a goaltending contreversy, I just think that Hedberg has more of a chance at the starters role than most around here are willing to aknowledge. I would not be at all surprised if they played 41 games each. Especially if the Canucks continue to play that way in front of Johan.
