Corvo....what the?

Is there a reason why Corvo has a TEAM-LEADING +/- stat of +17?! Is there something I'm missing here? I'm convinced he's our worst defenseman, yet this stat is saying he's the best defensive player on the team! :dunno:

It helps a bit to be paired with Visnovsky (2nd-highest scorer amongst defensemen) and on the ice whenever Demitra, Frolov and Conroy are. It's not much different than Modry.

The biggest reason is Lubo and playing with the Demitra line a lot. But IMO he is a solid d-man. We can't have 23 all-star players on our team.

Yeah, its suprising. He is now worth over 1 million in my hockey pool.

As of 11-27-05, Joesph Corvo has the best plus/minus stat (+19) of any player in the NHL not wearing an Ottawa Senators jersey. There are 717 players with a worse plus/minus than Joe Corvo. Say what you want about the stat, but it does provide an interesting perspective.

Maybe, just MAYBE, some of ya should stop thinking of him as the Bambi-legged, often-nutmegged, chick puncher of a couple of years ago and accept him for what he has become - a pretty solid #4 (ok, I'm pushing it) #5 defenceman - on a team that needs one pretty badly, I might add. Yes, the shot is still "wide right" occasionally, but he's picking his spots FAR better this year and rarely makes rookie mistakes that even Gleason (my favorite young Kings defenceman) is still occasionally making.

You'd think he insulted some of your mammas with the way he's often treated around here. :D

It is *much* different than Modry...

Good Post.

I think if he hadn't had the 3rd period blunder at home against Detroit earlier this year, he'd be getting praised right now.

He was getting praised up until that game and then he made a typical Corvo mistake.

Other than that however, he's been great in his role.

Are you saying that Modry insulted my momma?! :madfire:

I still prefer the "Bambi-legged, often-nutmegged, chick puncher" label for Corvo. We've got one vote... who else is in? :D

i think you're right...every time i begin thinking of Corvo as solid, i have flashbacks of of his assist on Maltby's goal

didnt he cough it up on The Canadiens short handed goal on Sat night? Maybe it wasnt him but anyways I think now is the perfect time to trade the guy. His stock is pretty high and I think we might be able to get a pretty good return if we package him in the right deal.

Yep it was him, with Conroy as his defense partner on the point. BUT, what led to Corvo fumbling and coughing up the puck was a terrible pass made by Dustin Brown that put Corvo in that position. There was a Habs player in the passing lane between Brown and Corvo, and for some reason Brown elected to put his pointman in a tough spot.

If you guys read the last page or two of the LA vs. Montreal thread you can read all about this situation. And how it was 90% Corvo's fault.

Ziggy Stardust 12-05-2005 01:05 AM

Here is a clip of the play,

Habs Shorthanded Goal

Brown's pass gets broken up, and the Habs attempt to clear the puck with Corvo outstretching to keep the puck in. I look at how the play started, and it originated from Dustin's failed pass attempt.

With that said, I don't know what Corvo is doing afterwards. He just quits on the play.

Exactly. Also if Joe would have made the smart play he would have just hooked the Montreal player down and taking what would have been considered a "good" penalty.

That's why the bulk of the blame lies with Corvo. Sure, Brown might've made a bad decision passing the puck, but Corvo made an even worse decision in putting himself in a very vulnerable position simply to keep the puck in. As a defenseman who is the last guy between the puck and Garon, his first priority should've been preventing a breakaway, not keeping the play alive.

Oh, for crying out loud! Now that I look at the video again, not only does Corvo play it poorly; he also perfectly flips the puck toward center ice like a perfect lead pass for the Hab, springing him for his breakaway! :madfire: Joe might as well have just said "here, go get it" :banghead:
