Q&A with Roenick at NHL.com

Funny, he still seems to be blaming his equipment for his shody play.

My jaw dropped when I read that. His poor play this season is because of "certain people's inability to cut (his skate blades) the right way"??! Maybe he should visit the grumpy old guy at the hockey rink in Culver City that all the guys on my team call the "Skate Nazi". Maybe his name is Hans? He gives you whatever cut he damn well thinks you should have - no negotiation!

If a skate blade hollow is all that stands between JR and a 30 goal / 1st line calibre-season, then I'll take up a collection for a giant robotic car-manufacturing-size machine to do it ferchrissake! On the flipside, would the Kings continue to employ someone who couldn't respond to individual player requests for their skates? Seems like an easy problem to solve to me. :dunno:

Wow...what exactly did we do to piss him off?

So, he's still blaming his equipment and on top of that, he's not happy being on the 4th line. One would think that he'd have the cajones to look inward to see if by chance something else was behind his level of play these days. He should also stop focusing on what he's going to do after retirement, and focus on hockey, we are paying him quite a lot of dinero to do so. Sorry for the rant, I probably could have put all of this a little more PC, but I've been sick and I have a short fuse today.

I really wish Roenick would get going, I enjoy his antics, and would enjoy them alot more if he could back them up with his play!

Flyers fan here and haven't seen any kings games this year, seems like JR is not playing well and is gettign 4th line duty. Has he done anything so far? Has his play been that bad?

No, Yes
in that order.

I've played some degree of hockey in my time, and I know it sounds ridiculous for him to blame the skates. However, don't underestimate the effect that an equipment problem can have on a player's mindset. If something is bothering you in the early-going, it can stick in your mind for a long time. You're always thinking about it, to the degree that, even after the equipment problem's been fixed(if it even was a problem to begin with), you still convince yourself that its there. The psychological element of the game is a very large part of on-ice performance. Even if his skates are fine, the fact the JR has convinced himself that he can't play effectively with the skates makes him fall down or not skate as fast, having less confidence in his ability. It's like the yipps for golfers in a way...a psychosomatic physical response to an internal problem. JR thinks his skates are a problem, so he falls down.

Not saying that's what's going on for sure...just something to think about...
