What are the prospects for adding free agents this summer?

Anyone have a take on the pending free agents we might target? Depending upon the finish to this season, of course. Primeau, Desjardins, Therien, Brashear, Sim, and Savage may all be gone given the rise of the new young nucleus. Would the Flyers have enough to re-sign Gagne and Johnsson plus add a free agent or two? IMO, set the sights on one of Chara, Redden, or Morris for the blueline and perhaps even take a run at either Sakic or Elias for the forwards. Anyone have any thoughts?

Jester 01-13-2006 09:17 AM

who the F cares... i'm worried about winning a Stanley Cup... not what's going to happen after that.

Art Vandelay 01-13-2006 11:02 AM

My speculation:
Simon Gagne, resigned at 4 mil.
Joni Pitkanen, resigned at 2.5 mil.
Antero Niittymaki, resigned at 1 mil.
R.J. Umberger, resigned at 800k
Freddy Meyer, resigned at 700k
Randy Jones, resigned at 600k.
Donald Brashear, resigned at max 700k.
Eric Desjardins, resigned at max 1 mil.
Matt Ellison, resigned at 600k.

Kim Johnsson, not resigned
Branko Radivojevic, resigned or traded
Dennis Seidenberg, probably traded

Stefan Ruzicka -> AHL
Rosario Ruggeri -> AHL
Alexandre Picard -> AHL
Rejean Beauchemin -> AHL

Signed for 06/07: 34 558 800
Peter Forsberg . $5 750 000
Simon Gagne . . .$4 000 000
Derian Hatcher . $3 500 000
Mike Rathje . .. $3 500 000

Joni Pitkanen .. $2 500 000
Michal Handzus . $2 128 000
Mike Knuble . .. $1 520 000
Sami Kapanen . . $1 520 000
Turner Stevenson $1 254 000
Antero Niittymaki$1 000 000
Robert Esche . . $1 000 000
Eric Desjardins. $1 000 000
Jeff Carter. . . $. 942 400
Mike Richards. . $. 942 400
R.J. Umberger .. $. 900 000
Donald Brashear. $. 700 000
Matt Ellison . . $. 600 000
Freddy Meyer . . $. 600 000
Ben Eager . . .. $. 602 000
Randy Jones. . . $. 600 000

20 players signed and about 8 million to shop for.

As the cap is supposedly set to increase somewhat (i'm playing with the 45 mil. figure) i think the Flyers would be in a position to go after a few,
(unless Gagne and Pitkanen asks for too much)
Primeau's retirement would "help" the situation, partly freeing up cap space for another winger but also clear space for Carter and Richards.

UFA targets:
1 top-6 winger: Jamie Langebrunner 2.5 mil.
1 defensive center: Mike Sillinger 1 mil.
1 D-man. (right shoot): Pavel Kubina 3.5 mil.

Salaries would add up to roughly 44 mil.

Simon Gagne - Peter Forsberg - Mike Knuble
R.J. Umberger - Jeff Carter - Jamie Langebrunner
Michal Handzus - Mike Richards - Sami Kapanen
Ben Eager - Mike Sillinger - Turner Stevenson
Donald Brashear, Matt Ellison

Joni Pitkanen - Derian Hatcher
Pavel Kubina -
Mike Rathje
Randy Jones - Eric Desjardins
Freddy Meyer

Antero Niittymaki
Robert Esche

i think everything depends on how he plays the second half of this season... i wouldn't lightly let a dman his age walk.

Cap Figure: $42 million - $45 million (according to Bettman)

Code:

Resigned-UFA
Eric Desjardins - $1.4 mllion
Donald Bashear - $600 K
Kim Johnsson - $1.8 million

Resigned-RFA
Simon Gagne - $3.5 million [Long term]
Joni Pitkanen - $2.2 million
Branko Radiojevic - $600 K
R.J. Umberger - $800 K
Antero Niittymaki - $1.2 million

Signed through 06-07
Jeff Carter - $942 K
Mike Richards - $942 K
Ben Eager - $602 K
Peter Forsberg  - $5.75 million
Michal Handzus - $2.128 million
Derian Hatcher - $3.5 million
Sami Kapanen - $1.52 million
Mike Knuble - $1.52 million
Keith Primeau - $3.42 million
Mike Rathje - $3.5 million

Waived
Turner Stevenson - Poor guy makes too much to be injured as much as he is

Traded
Dennis Seidenberg - Trade him and some picks to grab Erik Johnson or Jordan Staal
Matt Ellison - Trade him if it comes up, if not he'll be a cheap fill in.

FA Signings
Jim Vandermeer - $800 K one year deal (RFA)

Gagne-Forsberg-Knuble
Handzus-Richards-Radio
Eager-Carter-Umberg
Brashear-Primeau-Kapanen

Pitkanen-Rathje
Rico-Hatcher
Johnsson-Vandermeer

Frank
Esche

We'll have a solid lineup but there's a few things that need to be looked at. We'll have two fill in defenseman which may or may not be enough, depending on how badly injuries take hold again. We won't have the kind of forward depth that we did this year but that's alright because of the cap space.

With almost eight million dollars in cap space, that would leave Clarke with enough room for a top six forward around the deadline. Even after the forward would be added the Flyers could have some fill in players signed for cap purposes, and the replacement players would be allowed to join in the practices.

I agree. I want Johnsson back, but he could be asking for a too-hefty raise. However, his slightly disappointing start to the season may help keep the bidding war from getting too hot.

Johnsson's a pretty modest player, I don't see him asking for more than what he deserves and that isn't much.

In case you didn't notice, I agree with you totally. Would LOVE to see Clarke grab either one of these guys, and with all the picks he's amassed, it's possible.

You're probably right, but top 4 defensemen in their late-20s will probably command some good $ in free agency this offseason.

FlyHigh 01-13-2006 01:12 PM

I personally don't think that Johnsson will leave. I think he likes playing for Hitchcock and he knows that before he came to Philly, he was a 3rd pairing guy.

jb** 01-13-2006 02:15 PM

I think Desjardin will return for 1mm a year and that is fine as he would be a 5/6 Dman. I honestly believe Brashear will be back for 500k. Kappy will be back if he wants(I thought he was a f/a after this year) and not sure of what his salary will be(small raise). Seidenberg will be traded for a draft pick. Johnnson, depending on what kind of money he wants will be resigned or traded. Chara or redden would be great. If we donít resign Kim than that is very good possibility with the cap going up. If they do resign him they will still go after a #4 Dman IMO. What happens with Primeau will he a huge factor next year. Maybe he comes back this year and retires after the season or just retires period. I do think he will let the Flyers know of his intentions before the trading deadline so they can find a replacement or 2 being the type of person he is.
LOTN, Meyer and Jones will make league min, though it is only a couple hundred grand diff.. I thought Umberger was already signed for next year?

Hatcher/Johnnson or
Rathje/Pitkannen
Desjardin./ FA
or
Chara/Rathje
Hatcher/Pitkannen
Desjardin/ Meyer-Jones- Eric Weinrich type veteran

The min. will go up next season, dont remeber if it was to 500 or 600k though.

As for Umberger he signed a 2-year deal in the 2004 off season.

HoverCarle* 01-13-2006 02:27 PM

i wouldnt mind having KJ for around 2 mil. as long as its worth a few years.

Getting Kim Johnsson for around 2 million is living in a dream world. Look at the UFA's from last season: Adrian Aucoin- 4 mil, Derian Hatcher - 3.5, Mike Rathje-3.5 Alex Zhitnik-3.5, etc....

I will be shocked If Kim gets less than 3 and would honestly be surprised if he took less then Rathje, despite his tough start to this season. A healthy Kim Johnsson is better than any of those defenseman I named above and will command a high salary. I see him getting around 3.5-4 mil and I see Gagne getting around 4 or so (hopefully something like the Hejduk contract, 5 years 19.5 mil).

If Primeau retires, then you certainly have some money to play with. Gagne, Johnsson, and Pitkanen will probably command raises of 4-5 million total. If you loose Primeau's 3.4 and Brashear's 1.7 that takes care of the raises. Desjardins should also take a pay cut, which could save us up to 1 mil. I think we'll have around 2 million plus whatever the cap goes up to play around with and sign a veteran D-man. A lot depends on what we do at the deadline though.

daynus 01-18-2006 11:02 PM

I would like KJ back

yah somewhere around 3M sounds about right.

as for what we pickup at the trade deadline, i think will be fairly cheap. I agree that a cap increase of about 2M is probably accurate. so after sighning all the above we would have what 4M or so left, yah another Dman sounds good.

What I am wondering is who do we replace Peter Fosberg with if he dosnt return in two years?????...talk about holes to fill

I think Clarke keeps Johnsson and Desjardins and gets both for just over 3 million.

I don't like Langenbrunner for 2.5 - he's not worth near that kind of money.

1 million dollars for Sillinger? Clarke can do better than that too... the guy is as old as dirt.

I believe Johnsson WILL be resigned and that Brashear will not. Also, I don't think Nitty gets more than Esche got in his current contract. At least, not yet.

Well, hopefully by then Carter and Richards have really developed and that won't be a problem. To get another player like Forsberg, you'd either have give up so much as to not be worth it or draft him. The Flyers don't really stand in position to do either, although with the latter you never know. Just enjoy his time on the team and don't worry about it.

Chicago would re-sign Vandermeer at 800K

I think Johnsson will ask for 3 million+ and he can probably get it from another team not the Flyers though, Desjardins will probably stay for 800-900k.

2.5 might be a tad high for Langenbrunner, but he makes 1.7 right now so. :dunno:

Sillinger for 1 million would be excellent, he's almost a PPG player in freaking St. Louis, 34 years old = dirt ??.

My reasoning for letting Johnsson go is so that the Flyers can pick up a very good right handed defenseman. With the emergence of Pitkanen Johnssons role will get smaller and smaller on this team.
