The Abramovich team

I started this thread on the Canucks board, so I thought, why not try to see the reaction from the rest of the league?

Just for fun, I was thinking what kind of team Abramovich could put together. This fun assumes he buys the Canucks (a big if), and he actually puts an all Russian team on the ice (another if).

With "realistic" trades, what kind of team do you think he could piece together? For now I'm ignoring prospects (laziness is a killer).

Players already on the Canucks:
Chubarov, Fedorov, Koltzov

Golies:
Cloutier to TB for Khabibulin.
Hedberg to ANA for Bryzgalov

Defense:
Jovanoski to DAL for Zubov.
Ohlund to OTT for Volchenkov.
Sopel to TOR for Kondratiev.
Salo to CAR for D.Markov.
Malik to whomever for a mid-pick.
Allen to MTL for A.Markov.
Sign Yuskevich as UFA.

Forwards:
Morrison to TOR for Antropov.
Naslund to ANA for Fedorov.
Bertuzzi to ATL for Kovulchuck.
H.Sedin + pick to NYI for Yashin.
D.Sedin to NYI for Kvasha + pick.
King to PHO for Nazarov + pick.
Cooke to BUF for Afinoganov.
Linden + pick to NYR for Kovalev.
Ruttu to FLA for Novoseltsev.
Lindgren to NJ for Larionov.
May for Varlamov (Ukranian, I know)
Arvedson to ANA for Smirnov.
Keane to waivers.

Your new look Vancouver Red Army (Canucks didn't seem appropriate here):

LW-C-RW
Kovulchuck-S.Fedorov-Yashin
Afinoganov-Antropov-Kovalev
Novoseltsev/F.Fedorov-Larionov-Kvasha
Varlamov-Chubarov-Smirnov

LD-RD
A.Markov-Zubov
D.Markov-Yuskeivich
Volchenkov-Kondratiev

Starter-Backup
Khabibulin-Byzgalov

P.S. This was all for fun, so don't lose your cool.

Just for commenting:

Ducks wouldn't want Hedberg for Bryzgalov
And also Vishnevsky may be something that interests you on the blueline
Fedorov?...I dunna
Arvedson is an overpayment for Smirnov right now....

The deals that nab Kovalev and A. Markov are a little iffy IMO

Naslund is better than Fedorov right now but with him going back to Sweden soon Ducks would be better off keeping Sergei.

I don't think Cloutier could nab Khabibulin either.

It might be hard to ice an all Russian team since other teams know this as well and may jack up the asking price of their players. Maybe you could eventually have an all Russian team, but that would be over a few years at least. ONly way I see getting an all Russian team in a year would be to sign some from the Russian Super League.

Allen for Markov
Cloutier for Khabibulin
Bertuzzi for Kovalchuk
Linden + pick for Kovalev

keep dreaming boy :joker:

Hedberg for Bryzgalov ? wtf

It wouldn't work. It would take 1-2 trades before all other GMs would go "Gee, they really want russians. If they want our russians they will have to overpay."

I could see that in a year or two a team could assemble 5-6 russians. But an all-russian team won't work. Most likely the fans would turn their back on something like that.

That's the thing, Abramovich is a multi-billionaire. Fanbase wouldn't matter to him if his intentions were just to build an entire Russian team. If that was the case, he wouldn't be in it for the money, just the glory.

It's something that would likely be more feasible under a new CBA, if said new CBA is anything like an NFL-style one. Building AND keeping that team together would be almost impossible under any system, for various reasons.

should this thread be in the fantasy board?

If you're going to put all this effort in the idea, you could atleast keep the trades realistic.

This guy is a madman who does not give a crap about what's he giving up just what he is getting in return. He bought Chelsea and bought about 8 or 9 new players which he paid huge dollars for and to! Value is not his concern, if it means sending Cloutier and $7,000,000 to the lightning for Khabibulin he would do it, whatever it takes. I have a feeling if he bought the team, Burke and company would be out the door, and a few thousand Canuck fans would jump off the wagon...or the Granville Street Bridge. I, for the sake of hockey, hope this guy never even comes close to buying an NHL team, he would go against every principle the NHL is basing their stance on the CBA with the players.
